Female brown bears reach full size much quicker than their male counterparts.

How many videos have we witnessed thus far, where a female sloth bear stands her ground in defense against a big male tiger double her size? We have, thus far, only one video/account of the tiger actually remaining in the fight and killing the much smaller bear. Therefore ( IMO ) a mother Ussuri brown bear defending her cubs is not a bear that even the biggest male Amur tiger in all of northern Asia would dare to fight in a face-to-face confrontation.

Average fully-grown female Ussuri brown bear (7 years+) - 415 pounds. It would seem that the typical ( average ) weights of animals are continually changing. Over the past 5 years, the average male Amur tiger has jumped from 419 pounds up to 440 pounds. In reality, it isn't changes in the animals but rather in our discovering fact resources.

Here is another all-too common a problem with tiger fanboys desperate to find that nonexistent proof of a tiger killing a full-grown male brown bear. The juvenile fanboy reads an article about a tiger killing a "huge" bear... 1- Every single case ( as told by tiger fanboys ) claims the bear ( in their stories ) to be a huge bear.
2- When a tiger fanboy reads the words "huge bear" he automatically assumes the bear to be a gigantic male bear.
3- Fact: when a non-professional ( not a bear biologist ) sees a bear, even a bear weighing from 200 to 300 pounds, he reports it as a huge bear.
4- For these reasons, a word such big or huge or massive, etc. has absolutely no meaning when talking about bears. 5- Every single brown bear killed by a tiger is killed by ambush attack. 6- Every single brown bear killed by a tiger is either a juvenile bear or an adult she-bear. ( no exceptions )

In Arkhara settlement at 7:30 in the morning a bear came out to secondary school No. 1. The giant two-meter predator was immediately noticed by the locals and called the police. The police quickly arrived at the scene and shot the bear. www-amur-info.translate.goog/news/2016/09/22/116004?_x_tr_sl=ru&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=scwww.amur.info/print/news/116004/Click the link, the brown bear is emasciated, under weight. Edit: In the translated link, the next sentence shows the bear is emaciated, underweight yet he is called a giant: "This is a very, very, very old male. He has a little bit of fangs, he has no other teeth at all, ”said Vyacheslav Kastrikin, deputy director of the Khingan Reserve, Amur.info. - This male, except for semolina porridge, could not eat anything else, therefore such a thin one. He was just dying from old age. "

If a tiger or even a lone lion ( if that were possible in the wild ) were attempting to stalk-up on some brown bear cubs, and were found-out by the mother brown bear, and the bear charges the big cat ( which she surely would ) the big cat would retreat. Unlike the sloth bear, which has a reputation for being aggressive, a mother grizzly will not simply stand-up to the tiger defensively. The mother grizzly will be aggressively on the offensive in a vicious attack. The sloth bear has proven that a tiger dislikes a face-to-face fight. Actually, this holds true for all cats.

A big male Amur tiger will often have to struggle with a large brown she-bear after ambushing it. A quick kill is not always possible and the bear manages to turn the ambush into a fight. This was known to happen with Misha ( Dale ) in both of his two ambush attacks on adult she-bears. Dale was a very large Amur tiger, and was once weighed in at 445 pounds. In both cases, Dale managed to kill the female brown bears. But, ambushing a full-grown female brown bear is risky. The tiger is usually successful, but sometimes the prey manages to turn the tables and the she-bear feasts on the predator.

According to the mortality of young brown bears killed by tigers, biologists found only ONE young bear killed by a tiger, the rest of the bears were adults - during the Siberian Tiger Project study.

Reply #250 - It probably is very rare that a tiger kills a bear cub still with Momma Bear. In the rare case posted above, no doubt that the tiger had discovered the cub some distance from its mother, when the tiger ambushed and made a quick kill of the cub. After that, the female bear put her full attention upon her one remaining young cub. Another possibility, both two-year old cubs climbed the tree and then the mother bear followed them. Then one cub falls out. However, the most likely scenario, the tiger ambushed the two-year old cub, suddenly and unexpectedly as is normal in an ambush. Then, the mother bear clashes with the tiger and stands between him and her injured ( or dead ) cub. But, then, the arrival of people convinces the she-bear to climb up to her remaining cub. *Bottom line; there was no eye-witness to the actual event. Therefore, the details remain unknown. ( mother bear and cub in a tree; sounds more like a black bear ). Another post reads that a brown bear had been treed and an adult bear had been killed. In this case, the adult bear ambushed and killed by the tiger was obviously the mother bear, and the bear in the tree her cub. The mother bear fought the tiger in defense of her cub.

The most common bear prey for tigers are adolescent bears who are newly separated from their mothers ( 3 and a half to 5 years old ) and too young to compete with older bears. Of all the brown bears killed by Dale, all but the two adult she-bears were within these age ranges. No male brown bear above the age of 5 has ever been confirmed killed by a tiger. The tiger fears the adult male brown bear. *By the way... Reply #250 and #251 are simply more age-old accounts which have been hashed over many times through the years. When will one of these radically biased, juvenile tiger fanboys post something new? We all know that tigers kill adolescent brown bears and the occasional adult she-bear. But, this is all that the fanboys can post about because the adult male Ussuri brown bear is immune to tiger attacks. *Wildlife biologist & senior scientist, Joel Berger mentions a case of a brown bear being tree'd by a tiger, and another adult brown bear killed by a tiger. He also mentions that bears are unable to defend their offspring against tigers: *Where is his evidence? What, no video proof, no photos? Also note, ( Reply #248 )...Quote: The tiger is usually successful, but sometimes the prey manages to turn the tables and the she-bear feasts on the predator. When a tiger ambushes a brown she-bear or foolishly goes head-to-head with her when she is defending her cubs, sometimes the tiger is killed by the bear.

Vladimir Klavdiyevich Arsenyev was an explorer who wrote 'adventure stories' about his explorations in the Russian taiga. I had read one of his books, "Across the Ussuri Kray" several years ago. His tales were, without a doubt, based on facts as he saw things, but his observations were a long-shot from being accepted as conclusive facts as compared to a biological study. Example; he stated that a brown bear fears the wild boar. In truth, brown bears prey upon wild boars of every sex and size. In fact, Ussuri brown bears kill more full-grown male wild boars than tigers do. His travel partner was a hunter ( Dersu Uzala ). No doubts in my mind, Arsenyev did his share of hunting also. kids.kiddle.co/Vladimir_Arsenyev

In reply #250, Wildlife biologist & senior scientist, Joel Berger describes female Ussuri brown bears as "four or five hundred pounds" - NOT - try 330 to 440 pounds. *Note: the infamous Dale only killed two adult she-bears and the largest of them weighed within 330 to 440 pounds. Every other bear he killed was an adolescent bear, which is the tiger's most common bear-prey. That last she-bear, which Dale had to struggle with for roughly 20 minutes, was probably the big tiger's last hunt for bear. No doubts the big 445 pound tiger limped away from that struggle with some battle scars.

Debate: Male Amur Tiger vs Female Ussuri Brown Bear. Two years ago, I voted 50/50 on this fight. Of course, nearly every killing of a brown she-bear by a male tiger is accomplished by an ambush attack. In these ambush attacks, the tiger almost always kills the she-bear. We have one confirmed case of a tiger killing a she-bear who fought in defense of her cub. Knowing what I know now, I would change my vote to male tiger defeats Ussuri brown she-bear. *Note: these she bears always weigh less than the tiger who killed them. The she-bear killed by Dale was estimated by one observer to weigh roughly 330 pounds and by another observer 440 pounds. Average those numbers and we get - 385 pounds. A believable weight. *Note also that a brown bear of equal weight to the tiger is smaller than the tiger. The tiger is considerably taller ( bipedal ) and longer in HB length. So, these she-bears hunted and killed by big male tigers are not "almost up to their own size" as is so often stated by tiger fans. *Note also, a female brown bear is not as strong as a male brown bear of equal size. So, why do tiger fans continue to brag about big male tigers killing she-bears as if this is some great accomplishment? If a big male Asiatic lion were to kill a tigress, would that put a feather into the hats of lion fans?

The interaction between tigers and lazy bears shows that the actual strength of tigers is not as strong as that described in words.

Reply 255. 500 pounds is below average for a nine year old male Ussuri brown bear and the largest an adult female can grow.

Reply 255. 500 pounds is below average for a nine year old male Ussuri brown bear and the largest an adult female can grow. True. A female Ussuri brown bear reaching 500 pounds or more is certainly uncommon. A 500 pound male Ussuri brown bear is not a large specimen. A 500 pound male Amur tiger is a very large tiger while a 500 pound tigress is unheard of.
