A brown bear ( preferably grizzlies ) could survive ( IMO ) south of the Sahara, because brown bears are highly adaptable. They would have a lot to learn, such as becoming accustomed to a multitude of wild animals and vegetation which would be alien to the bears in the beginning. After a couple of generations, brown bears would be fitting-in as if they were native species. ( The same as mustangs, razor-back hogs, and, for a couple of centuries, range cattle in North America )

1- a pride of lions will not ambush a bull hippopotamus nor ( questionable ) probably not a full-grown cow hippopotamus. 2- a pride of lions will not ambush a bull rhinoceros ( either species ) nor even a full-grown rhinoceros cow. 3- a pride of lions will not ambush a bull elephant nor even a healthy full-grown elephant cow. Question: would a pride of lions ambush a 1,000+ pound brown bear? Answer: maybe yes or maybe no.

According to the video directly above, the Atlas bear had short claws and was not a proficient tree climber. This would suggest that the Atlas bear did not scurry up a tree to escape such predators as the hyena or the Barbary lion.
