I feel like we need to take another look at those 1 paw swipe accounts more. Read the history behind it and background, what was the hunters name in the yellowstone account? What is the actual background of this guy? Did anyone ask yellowstone officials if it ever happened?

Crowd Sees Lion Kill Bear in Fight CORRT, Pa., July IS. In a cage battle, which resulted when the keeper of the menagerie of a street carnival showing here left a cage door open, a lion killed a half-grown bear last night. The fight occurred at the close of the performance and it was witnessed by many persons. Keepers drove the lion back into his cage Pittsburgh Daily Post from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania · Page 1
Half-grown bear? Lol we want a full grown bear.

Was it even a brown bear?

Was it even a brown bear? Exactly. In this case it really doesn't matter. When a big cat kills a "half grown bear", there is no feather for anyone's hat. But, you make a good point. The average person with no keen interest in wild animals, cannot tell the difference between a black bear, a moon bear, a sloth bear, an Andean bear, or a sun bear. So, the report will simply read "bear." But, when a brown bear is in the story, the report will normally read "brown bear' or "grizzly." I will edit and add: In any report of a bear killed by another wild beast, it's a good idea to look for the bear's age, size, sex, species, or any other specifics concerning this individual bear. Also note, such adjectives as "big", "large", "huge", etc. are absolutely meaningless when concerning a bear. A 150-pound black bear will be called a huge bear.

domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/507/original-king-beasts?page=3 Continued.... Although they sometimes staged battles in the arena between bears and bulls ( the bears almost always won ), they especially liked to see wild animals brought from Africa or Asia fight one another or against men. Sometimes, however, curiosity made them wonder about the strength of a bear or a bull compared to that of an animal from afar, and so there were battles between bears and lions, bears and panthers, bulls and lions, bulls and an elephant, and even a bear and a rhinoceros. Although bulls, fighting alone or in a group, seem never to have been victorious, a bear always won in single combat against a lion or against several panthers. Michel Pastoreau source is actually legit. He studied romans. Check reply #112 beargorillarealm.proboards.com/thread/112/bear-lion?page=4Even the naturalist Wayne Mich confirms the source. "In the arenas of ancient Rome, where lions were sometimes pitted against brown bears, the burly bruins invariably killed the lions." books.google.it/books?id=dJg9EAAAQBAJ&pg=PA5&dq=In+the+arenas+of+ancient+Rome,+where+lions+were+sometimes+pitted+against+brown+bears,+the+burly+bruins+invariably+killed+the+lions.&hl=it&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj91bOF6Z75AhWbQvEDHboQAnsQ6AF6BAgLEAM So it's an undeniable fact that bears won against lions in roman arenas. No matter what lion fanatics say, facts can't change. Even his book red says Roman history. “Michel Pastoureau égaie son roman par des anecdotes personnelles …” That translates to michel brightens up his Roman novels. He writes novels about Rome. www.decitre.fr/livres/les-couleurs-de-nos-souvenirs-9782757854471.htmlLook at this site, some books are in the Roman histroy genre. www.eyrolles.com/Accueil/Auteur/michel-pastoureau-5703He also made a book about the cost of arms which is the symbol of Rome : www.amazon.fr/blason-Patrice-Perri%C3%A8re-St%C3%A9phane-Rossini/dp/B07DSJFQLT/ref=mp_s_a_1_18?pscroll=1&qid=1663283932&refinements=p_27%3AMichel+Pastoureau&s=books&sr=1-18&wIndexMainSlot=19Another book strictly about Roman and medieval www.amazon.fr/Chevaliers-Table-ronde-Romans-arthuriens/dp/2072849411/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1663283924&refinements=p_27%3AMichel+Pastoureau&s=books&sr=1-2Another one : www.amazon.fr/quotidienne-France-Angleterre-temps-chevaliers/dp/2010177371/ref=mp_s_a_1_42?pscroll=1&qid=1663284216&refinements=p_27%3AMichel+Pastoureau&s=books&sr=1-42&wIndexMainSlot=36

"1908, Baltimore the lion, kill a 900 pounds russian brown bear." https%3A//www.newspapers.com/image/118580417/%3Fterms%3DBear%252BBostocks The account may be real. Only problem is that the bear was sick and weakened, another article states that it has been sick since its arrival from London and had rheumatism, he also had to be retired from the arena. Note: the bear got the rheumatism since 02 August, 17 days before the incident. So it is doubtful that the bear would have recovered in just these days because the rheumatism is a long lasting disease and while it can be made less painful, it can not be cured. www.researchgate.net/post/Is_rheumatism_a_curable_disease2But the lion also had a minor disease called "revolver shots in the skull" I believe.

Even if this story is true, there is no victory when a big cat kills a sick and injured bear. Even if such an event could be witnessed and confirmed, this would not put a feather into the hat of a big cat fan. But personally, such tales from a 1908 newspaper is highly questionable.

Still Baltimore had less serious injuries than the bear. Shots in the skull are nothing in comparison to rheumatism.

But the point is that it was weakened. Most likely a very old bear; probably the equivalent of a 90-year-old-man.
