2 adult bull bisons, one 8 years old and the other 11, killed by the Carpathian brown bear in a very short time. How many accounts we have like this before? Very very few. Shows what a brown bear is capable of doing. OK; the Carpathian brown bear is roughly within the same size-range as the Ussuri brown bear / full-grown male weighing from 650 to 700 pounds average.

Yeah, the 5+ year olds average 590 lbs, so a full grown 9+ year old should average what you said. The Carpathian brown bear does have different populations though, so we dont exacly know. The Romanian population is the one that averages 590 lbs:

The Polish population (where those two bull bisons were killed), we really dont know.

Why bad choices? If we use a 700 lb brown bear we would have to do our lists all over again. 1400 lbs or 1000 lbs is a whole different deal than 700 lbs. I went to do just that ( as you can see ) but frankly, I see no difference. A 700-pound brown bear is still a Beast. Yeah; I will up-this ( back to ) to 1,000-pounds - which very likely preyed upon adult bison in the 'Old West'.

1,000-pound brown bear versus: 1- any elephant species - elephant 100% 2- any rhinoceros species with the exception of Sumatran rhinoceros - rhino 100% 3- Hippopotamus - hippo 100% 4- Sumatran rhinoceros - bear 7 / rhino 3. 5- Elephant seal - seal 100% 6- Walrus - walrus 100%. 7- Giraffe - 50/50 ( maybe ). 8- Gaur / Yak / Cape Buffalo / Water Buffalo / Bison / Spanish Fighting Bull - 50/50. 9- All other domesticated bull bovines - bear 8 / bull 2. 10- Polar bear - polar bear 8 / brown bear 2. 11- 1,000+ pound crocodile ( on land )- 50% 12- 1,000+ pound crocodile ( in water ) - crocodile 100% - ( but this is a "dry land fight" only contest ) 13- Bull Moose - 50% 14- Stallion horse ( king of a herd )- 50% ( 5 and 6 ) a bear is too intelligent to continue in a fight he can't win if walking away is easily possible. So no kills here. However, the bear's retreat gives a win to the huge pinniped. *So, I found 6 land-based animals that ( IMO ) can kill a 1,000 pound brown bear better than 50% in a face-off. Half-ton brown bear. This bear should stand roughly 4 feet 6 inches at his shoulders and stand between 8 and 9 feet tall bipedal.

www.roysfarm.com/spanish-fighting-bull/ Spanish Fighting Bull Characteristics The fighting bulls are usually medium sized animals with normal coloration, but many are also colored black or dark brown. They are easily characterized by their aggressive behavior, especially when solitary or unable to escape. These animals usually reach maturity slower than other meat cattle breeds. Because they were not selected for being heavy (instead having a well-muscled look). The fighting bulls have a distinctive profile for a complex of muscles over the shoulder and neck and the strength with their horns. Their horns are usually longer than most other cattle breeds. And the horns are also present in both males and females. The fighting bulls are actually selected for a certain combination of aggression, energy, strength, and stamina. Average body weight of the mature fighting bull vary from 500 to 700 kg. ( 1100 to 1500 pounds ). *This is the only domesticated breed that ( IMO ) stands a good 50% chance against a half-ton brown bear.

Spanish bulls might be the most aggressive out of bovines but they are outclass by wild bovines like the American bison, Cape buffalo, and gaur in terms of weight.

Reply #49 - OldGreenGrolar asks - Quote: "Does extinct animals (non ursids) apply?" *No, absolutely not. We could write a never-ending list of prehistoric monsters who could defeat any beast living on Earth today. *Note: you will not find the name of any big cat listed here.

We know that a grizzly ( from 450 to 550 pounds ) is capable of killing a moose. This leaves me with no doubts that a 1,000 pound brown bear can kill a Cape buffalo.

( a polar bear probably has a good 50/50 chance ). 7- Giraffe - 50/50 ( a big maybe )? 8- Gaur / Yak / Cape Buffalo / Water Buffalo / Bison / Spanish Fighting Bull - 50/50. 9- All other domesticated bull bovines - bear 8 / bull 2. 10- Polar bear - polar bear 8 / brown bear 2. 11- 1,000+ pound crocodile ( on land )- 50/50. 12- 1,000+ pound crocodile ( in water ) - crocodile 100% - ( but this is a "dry land fight" only contest ) 13- Bull Moose - 50/50. 14- Stallion horse ( king of a herd )- 50/50. 15- Giant Eland - 50/50. *Total of 4 land-based animals that can defeat a 1,000 pound brown bear in a face-off in 10 out of 10 fights ( IMO )... elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, and elephant seal. More than four when divided into species. *Note: Land-based Vertebrata only in this contest. Also, poisonous reptiles excluded. *Note: ( IMO ) a full-grown male brown bear stands a better chance against any land-based adversary in a face-to-face fight than does a big cat.

Divided into species: 1- African bush elephant. 2- African forest elephant. 3- Asian elephant. 4- white rhinoceros. 5- black rhinoceros. 6- Indian rhinoceros. 7- Javan rhinoceros. 8- hippopotamus. 9- northern elephant seal. 10- southern elephant seal. *So, technically there are ( IMO ) 10 species of land-based animals which can defeat a 1,000 pound brown bear in a face-off in 10 out of 10 fights. *Edit and add ( a week later ), Warsaw, a very knowledgeable poster and bear enthusiast, stated fairly recently ( in my own words ) that in a face-off against a large wild bull bovine ( I'm thinking bison, buffalo, gaur, etc. ) he would wager on the bull bovine. However, I do not always agree with the "experts" and we have posted some confirmed kills of adult bison by brown bears. We do not ( thus far ) have any confirmed reports of a bison killing a brown bear. As for a giraffe, I'm wagering on the 1,000 pound bear - but still skeptical.

( IMO )... I would give a 1,000 pound brown bear a 50/50 in a face-off against any bovine on this line-up.

A larger polar bear will also beat a 1000 pound brown bear.

A larger polar bear will also beat a 1000 pound brown bear. A polar bear 1200 pounds or heavier and I wager on the polar bear. Average polar bear; probably below the 1200 pound mark. ( Just my opinion )

The only domesticated breed of bull that I give ( IMO ) a 50/50 against a 1,000-pound grizzly is the Spanish Fighting Bull. Within the ranks of other breeds, I'm sure that there are individuals who might hold their own in a confrontation with a grizzly.

The Spanish bull is the most aggressive of the bovines. They rather fight than run.

I agree the spanish fighting bulls are one tough SOB. Lifting that vehicle's front end off the ground with ease shows how powerful they are. He just seems like he's really Pissed off. All solid muscle and IMO would be one tough out for even a 1000lb Bear. In fact those horns are situated as such that goring the Bear would be a high probability and potentially lethal unless the Bear could control the head.

According to the book, 'California Grizzly' ( how true those tales are questionable ), the grizzly always did exactly that. He would control the bull's head, sometimes by grabbing it's tongue.
