Very few modern living animals can challenge a 1,000 pound bear in it's habitat, and out of these animals the land animals that can challenge a big brown bear rather than other brown bears is the polar bear if the bear goes further enough to the north, or some big American crocodile, and American crocodiles are rather rare.

It is perfectly clear what species of bear was in the Roman arena. There was only one European bear; Ursus arctos. (or possibly an Atlas brown bear from Africa). The rhinoceros, African... either the black, Diceros bicornis or the white, Ceratotherium simum.

Reply 181. The polar bear involved in the fight is probably slightly above 1000 pounds at most.

Reply 181. The polar bear involved in the fight is probably slightly above 1000 pounds at most. Well, we are still without a weight for the average full-grown (9+ yrs old) male polar bear. Average mature male polar bear (6 years+) - 1075 pounds. Average mature female polar bear (5 years+) - 485 pounds. Average mature male Foxe Basin polar bear (5 years+) - 1300 pounds.

/\ I think the last one is exaggerated. There are no polar bears which average 1600 pounds.
For example, an average Kodiak bear at 6 years is 600 pounds, an average Kodiak bear at 9 years old is 875 pounds (spring) to 1077 pounds (autumn and winter).

I do. I'd love to see a bear roaming in the African Savannah (apart from the extinct Atlas bear) with lions, leopards, hyenas etc. But I would have to wonder how this bear would compete with said predators for food. It may have to become more herbivorous.

*These animals ( IMO ) could defeat a 1,000 pound brown bear 10 out of 10: 1- African bush elephant. 2- African forest elephant. 3- Asian elephant. 4- White rhinoceros. 5- Black rhinoceros. 6- Indian rhinoceros. 7- Javan rhinoceros. 8- Hippopotamus. *These animals stand a 50/50 chance ( IMO ) against a 1,000 pound brown bear. 1- Gaur / Yak / Cape Buffalo / Water Buffalo / Bison / maybe some other wild bovine / Spanish Fighting Bull. 2- Polar bear. ( average size which for a full-grown male - 9+ years old ) would be roughly 1200 pounds. 3- 1,000+ pound crocodile. 4- Bull Moose. 5- Stallion feral horse ( king of a herd ). 6- Giant Eland. 7- Bull walrus. 8- Northern elephant seal. 9- Southern elephant seal. 10- Sumatran Rhinoceros. *Note: A bull elephant seal is too big, slow, and awkward to kill the bear, but he is too big and powerful for the bear to kill. A standoff. *Note: This topic is with a 1,000 pound brown bear. ( An average polar bear would have the advantage over an average brown bear ). *Unknown conclusion/undecided opinion: 1- Giraffe. All those listed as 50/50 could possibly win more often, perhaps 60/40 or 70/30 as this in educated guess-work.

After some reading this and giving each confrontation a great deal of rethinking I'm going to make some drastic changes in my assessment. ____________________________________________________ *These animals ( IMO ) could defeat a 1,000 pound brown bear 10 out of 10: 1- African bush elephant. 2- African forest elephant. 3- Asian elephant. 4- White rhinoceros. 5- Black rhinoceros. 6- Indian rhinoceros. 7- Javan rhinoceros. 8- Hippopotamus. _________________ *These animals might defeat a 1,000 pound brown bear in from 6 or 7 out of 10. 1- Gaur / Yak / Cape Buffalo / Water Buffalo / Bison / maybe some other wild bovine / Spanish Fighting Bull. 2- 1,000+ pound crocodile. 3- Bull Moose. 4- Giraffe. _________________ *These animals stand a 50/50 chance ( IMO ) against a 1,000 pound brown bear. 1- Polar bear. ( average size which for a full-grown male - 9+ years old ) would weigh roughly 1200 pounds. 2- Stallion feral horse ( king of a herd ). 3- Giant Eland. 4- Bull walrus. 5- Northern elephant seal. 6- Southern elephant seal. 7- Sumatran Rhinoceros.
*Note; I listed the walrus and elephant seals as a 50/50 because, while the bear would (imo) only rarely succeed in killing a bull walrus and (imo) never succeed in killing a bull elephant seal, neither would the bear be killed. The bear is too quick, agile, and intelligent to be killed in such a confrontation. *I listed the Sumatran rhino because, he lacks the quickness and agility of a fighting bull, which a brown bear defeats more often than not (historically), and his thick hide is no where close to the thickness of the hide of a walrus, which have been killed by bears. *I listed the large wild bovine and the Spanish fighting bull as "6 to 8 out of 10" because only a brown bear will experience in killing large bovine would stand a 50/50 in such a confrontation.

A bear of Van's dimensions compared to a Spanish fighting bull; seems like a complete mismatch to me. I'd give a 1000lbs brown bear a more than decent shot as the fighting bulls are rather smallish. Also, if a bull like this can lift a car with ease, I don't want to imagine the strength of a 1600lbs+ brown bear, it would be completely off the charts. Thicker arms, thicker neck, thicker shoulders. Stronger in every siginificant area.
