Kodiak are turning into a Lion fanboy? With the risk of starting this argument all over again here is my 2 cents this one and only time. You can agree with me or disagree that is your choice. One one thing I don't recall anyone stating is the fact that a Bear (but more importantly a Large Kodiak Bear) is that they fight most times bipedal. Which IMO gives the Bear a great advantage. With the weight of a large bull cape buffalo, but with the ability to grapple and the use of teeth and claws, a Kodiak Bear is no Buffalo. Were assuming the Lions would attack simultaneously but we can't be sure. The many videos I've seen of dual lions attacking a bull Buffalo is one usually waits till the his buddy gets a good hold of the Buffalo before he rushes in to help. Problem is a single Lion getting a good hold on a Bear that large and holding the Bear long enough for the other to join in is going to be very dicey at best. A 1300 lb Kodiak simply tosses the Lion aside or worse crushes the Lions skull with a blow from it's arm. That being said: Hypothetically if both did rush the Bear at once then yes the Bear would have his hands full. But even so unless the Lions can quickly immobilize the Bear and bring him off his feet (key here) , a Large Kodiak can simply out muscle even two Lions. A bear under 700 lbs I would certainly have to give the nod to the Lions, but not a large Kodiak. That's my Opinion and I'm stickin too it.

Personally I have support a large male kodiak and polar bear over a two male lions too.
If the Kodiak bear manages to kill one lion quickly, the other is done for. Basically, it depends on how well the lions corporate. They will risk at least one of their members dying.
My opinion is similar to Brobear’s but again, we all at least agree on most things.

A white rhino could mop the floor with five lions, 3 would get absolutely stomped imo.

I'm busy at the moment writing a letter to Robert Ripley. He is just not going to believe who was the one member of 'Domain of the Bears' to vote against the Kodiak bear.

But at least you have to agree with me that even though i am a Kodiak fanatic i still try to be as reliable as possible. And my opinion on this thread shows just that. It shows that i wont just give the kodiak the win just because i am a fanatic of it. At least this is clear.

assuming a 1000 pound male kodiak bear, and 2 500 pound male lions, i would favor the lions 6/10. 2 experienced male lions attacking from different sides will be abit too overwhelming for the kodiak bear imo.

First lion attacks and places himself in front of the buffalo. Momments later, the second lion attacks from one side and his job is to try to pull the buffalo cow onto the ground. the first lion is strangling the cow. The second lion is not trying to kill the cow; merely subdue her. If this were a Kodiak bear, the first lion would be dead or disabled very quickly. The second lion would either retreat or be mauled.

After reading all the very reliable and smart arguments on this thread, from Brobear, Tom, Undertaker, and Kassuts, i have now changed my mind slightly. On page 1, i stated it was 8/9 out of 10 for the 2 lions, now i think its 50%, (which i think is very reliable for this being a 2 vs 1 situation).

I also like to add the a large Kodiak bear can defend itself better from two lions at close quarter combat then a Cape buffalo due to its more flexible forearms. One a lion gets on a buffalo’s back, the only thing the bovine can’t do is try to shake it off.
And once a lion bites at the throat, there is almost nothing the bovine can do. However, the Kodiak bear can still use its paws to get at the lion even if the cat manages to bite its throat. And its flexible forearms can still reach a lion on its back. It also have superior stamina.
This being said, the kodiak gets my vote 6/10.

Kodiak Bear vs Lion Coalition of 2; I have always found this type of face-off to be rather redundant. If a bear is killed by 2 or 3 lions, where is the victory? Do the lion fanboys whoop and cheer? When it takes more than one to defeat an adversary, then that adversary has ( IMO ) already been chosen as the champion. If the lions kill the bear - neither side wins a feather for his hat. But if the bear kills both lions; a huge victory for the bear enthusiasts. Its a no-can-win for the lion fanboys. If the bear is killed after killing one lion - then we have one dead lion and one dead bear - no winners. *Edit and add: the big cat fanboys have become so enthralled in creating face-off scenarios where the big cat can defeat a bear that its just gotten out-of-hand. *A proper face-off - each animal a prime male each at the typical size of his species/subspecies. Exception to the rule; hyena should be a female. One-on-one; otherwise the face-off is meaningless ( IMO ).
