How would a Steppe brown bear ( Ursus arctos priscus ) or Ursus maritimus tyrannus ( giant brown bear ) do against a hippopotamus or a rhinoceros ( white rhino or greai Indian rhino )?

No chance. Not even the largest single bear specimen in history, the 3500 lb Arctotherium Angustidens, would have any chance.

I would agree that as a specie, a huge brown bear like the Steppe brown bear would do a better job, but the problem is they did not even come close to that single 3500 lb specimen of Angustidens. If any bear had a chance, thats Angustidens, maybe 1 lucky chance out of 10 against a white rhino? Or not even?

3500 pounds might be an over-estimation though. There remains a lot of SCEPTICISM.

3500 pounds might be an over-estimation though. There remains a lot of SCEPTICISM. Well, that single specimen has already been downsized from 4500 lbs to 3800 lbs, and then left at about 3500 lbs. 3500 lbs is what is most accepted in all forums. It was huge, the largest single bear ever, thats for sure.

The largest extant terrestial carnivores are polar bears and occasionally large brown bears comfortably surpassing the 1000lbs mark. A pygmy hippopotamus is an easy meal for these behemoths, a Sumatran rhino would be a very tough opponent but I would still bet on the large brown bear/polar bear as I have explained in the "Kodiak Bear vs Sumatran Rhinoceros" thread. The gap between a Sumatran rhino and a black rhino is immense, not just in terms of size but also in terms of aggressiveness. A black rhino would trample a Kodiak bear/polar bear and it wouldn't even be close, same for the hippopotamus. White rhinos are completely out of contest, it would be a one hit kill. Arctotherium angustidens could reportedly rival a male black rhino/hippo in size, that would be one of the closest and most interesting battles imaginable imo.

He was discovered to be an old bear; therefore not likely an average specimen of his kind. Nevertheless; HUGE.

Definitely, the average for Angustidens was most likely close to between 1500 to 2000 lbs with a normal max weight of 2500 lbs as we discussed here in this thread: (all just estimates of course)

That 3500 lb bear was just a single specimen.

Poor pygmy, lol.

Agree with you undertaker, the black rhino and above will be just too much for any bear.

WOW.. I will have to side with those that say no Bear regardless of size would be able to remove a Hippo or White or Black Rhino off it's feet and that's what it would take for a Bear to have any chance. Too much mass, muscle and power to over come. Head to head the Bear would get destroyed. I can't even picture a scenario in my mind where a Bear could win.

There has been only one recorded confrontation between bear and rhino ( to my knowledge ) and that was in the ancient Roman arena. Probably an African rhinoceros. In my own words, it was Mack truck ( rhino ) meets Easter Bunny ( brown bear ). 'Nuff said.
