Its not at all about whether or not the polar bear is big enough or strong enough to kill musk ox or wild bovine. The great white bear has become perfectly adapted to his high-arctic environment. Biologists list him as an aquatic animal. His brain is wired to aquatic prey - seals and walrus. Hoofed animals are almost alien to him. However, if polar bears and musk ox are tossed into the same environment long enough, the bear might change his habits. Roughly 200,000 years ago, polar bears were grizzlies.

According to great bear of almanac, polar bears do kill lone old bull musk oxens. I do not doubt this. If global warming is indeed a reality, some polar bear populations might have to change their predatory habits or perish. Edit and add... polar bears might learn to prey upon musk ox and carribou. But, even with being both an active hunter and scavenger, once in the land of the grizzly, the great white bear must also learn to seek other food, especially vegetation if he is to survive south of the high-arctic. Of course, he will be blending back into the grizzly population - grolar bears.

In shaggy bear forum, there is a video of polar bears seemingly taking down caribao. If polar bears can learn to hunt musk oxens and caribao, I believe the same polar bear can also learn how to hunt bison. Grizzlies used to be larger and have 85% meat as their diet until most of the animals became extinct that grizzlies have to take to plant matter and become smaller in sizen. This is why grizzlies of the past like the califonian grizzly were more successful bison hunters. The barren grizzlies have learned to hunt musk oxens.

The biggest problem; the number #1 reason why grizzlies are less carnivorous today is men with rifles. The bears who hunt and kill for food are by nature the more aggressive bears. Therefore, these are the bears who are "removed" from a population of bears. Doug Peacock told of a particular grizzly in Montana who would walk right past a carcass to hunt live elk. But bears like that are very rare in today's world.

What is the largest animal a polar bear can kill? Beluga whales are among the smallest species of whales. Adult males range from 13 to 20 feet (4 to 6.1 meters) in length and weigh 2,000 to 3,000 lbs. (907 to 1,361 kilograms), according to National Geographic. Walruses weigh from 600 to 1,500 kilograms (1,320 to 3,300 lbs.) and can be as long as 3.2 meters (10.5 feet), according to the Animal Diversity Web (ADW), a database maintained by the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan. Note: I would call it a toss-up between the Beluga Whale and the Walrus being the biggest animal that a polar bear can kill.

Yes brobear i agree. In my opinion, the largest of those 2 specimens that a polar bear would kill, is 2500 lbs, max. It would have to be the largest polar bear though, but still very rare of course.

While I have nothing against the article, a captive polar bear could never be 'giant' unless it was freshly brought from the wild. What did the green bear (captive polar bear with algae in its fur) do for the elephant to attack it? Did the polar bear initiate the attack on the elephant or was the letter just not in a good mood?

Well the details are not there as to why the fight happened. And i agree that to be a giant polar bear it had to be imported straight from the wild as the ones in captivity basically never grow full. But there are some giant polar bears in captivity, take a look.

Bigger in more recent times than in years gone by.

The point is, whatever the reason of the fight, an elephant knocked the ambition of a “giant” polar bear, maybe exagerated, who knows? But what i am trying to show here is that the largest and strongest land animal in the world sometimes wins fights also, not just gets predated on.

Oh definatly, 900 lb polar bears in captivity are absolutely huge. Most polar bears in zoos were not taller than their trainers.

Most black bears are not taller than their trainers either. Shows a polar bear is more powerful than a black bear pound to pound.

You have a great point brobear. You too Greegrolar. I was so happy when i found that account, that is the third account we have of a polar winning in captivity. One against lions, another against a brown bear and now this one. I believe a polar is stronger than a black bear at same weight yeah. Also, a polar bear is at home in water so he had no problem drowning those 2 black bears.
