'Lionman' figurine of cultural signicance from prehistoric Europe, I'd also note that the 'Zodiac' table includes the lion and bull, but no bear. Demi-god Hercules defeated the deadly Nemean lion, and thereafter proudly wore its pelt, in Classical myth. Bears were not accorded such status, generally being regarded as too pig-like in their habits.

Greece is near Africa. The ancient Greeks and Romans loved and admired the lion. This was not changed when a lion lost a fight in the arena. Again: according to the records of the ancient Romans, the lion always lost to the true champion of the circus games, the bear.

Not so, brobear. Kindly do a proper fact check.
The Romans organised and watched untold animal combats, over hundreds of years.
Lions certainly dominated bears in the arena, as the Roman writers duly recorded.
Just as they'd been seen to do in nature, in places such as Asia Minor, Syria, and in North Africa.

You sure antispam? Because this thread says otherwise. The champion of Rome was the bear, also the original king of the beasts.
Just a side note here: this is exaclty why animal debates are a waste of time, the tiger fans claim that the tiger was the Roman champion, the lion fans claim the same, and us Bear fans claim the same. I mean, this is just funny, ha ha ha ha.

Well sure, you can just joke around... as you like.
Or you can do a proper fact check/literature review.
( By 'literature review', I mean reliable accounts from the true/original sources, not fiction).

The lion was the favorite animal of the Romans for many reasons but the animal fights of the circus games not being one of them. Historically, the lion never defeated the bear in the arena. Of all the beasts, the bear was considered the champion. In fact, the only animal the bear ever lost to was the rhinoceros. Note - Guest, stop getting your so-called facts from bogus online sites created by big cat fan-boys.

In all of Europe, for thousands of years - perhaps tens of thousands - before the title of "King of Beasts" was given to the lion on a silver platter by the Church - in roughly the year 1200 AD - the bear ( grizzly ) was the highly acclaimed "King of Beasts." Kodiak - you really must purchase this book - you will love it. Tons of interesting info.

Brute says: I never heard about bears and lions fighting in roman colosseums. But if it happened surely the bear must have won. The animal fights within the ancient Roman arenas called "the circus games" are discussed in the book that Kodiak will soon be reading. Kodiak; there is so much valuable info in that book. I hope that you will read it cover-to-cover.

Yeahhh man tell this lion boy. Exactly. It's crazy how so many big cat fans think that a simple lion or a tiger can kill a large brown bear.
