The bear ( grizzly ) is the national animal of both Russia and Finland. It appears that Vladimir Putin prefers the tiger over the bear. Probably because the tiger was voted as the most popular animal in the world and the fact that the tiger is a true predator ( Like Mr. Putin ).

www.bears.org/spirit/ Humankind has forever had a connection to the bear. The earliest known religions were those of the bear cults. Evidence of ritual burials and reverence of bear remains has been seen in nearly every culture in the world. treesforlife.org.uk/forest/mythology-folklore/bear/ Bear folklore is widespread, especially in the far northern hemisphere. It is not surprising that this awesome beast was one of the first animals to be revered by our ancestors. From as far back as the Palaeolithic (around 50,000 years ago) there is evidence of a bear cult in which the bear was seen as lord of the animals, a god, and even the ancestor of humans. Various species of bear played a central role in many shamanic practices of the north, and brown bears were part of our native forests as recently as the 10th century, when hunting and habitat loss drove them to extinction. The Celts venerated the bear goddess, Artio - like a mother bear she was a fiercely protective influence. The bear god Artaois is closely linked to the warrior-king, Arthur; with his legendary strength and fighting prowess, Arthur's name and emblem both represent this animal. Celtic families would often have their own animal totem, a tradition that is still evident in the family name McMahon, which means 'son(s) of the bear'. Viking warriors were famous for working themselves into an insane battle frenzy (it has been suggested that the psychotropic fly agaric mushroom was sometimes used). They invoked the bear spirit, at times even donning a bear skin, to imbue them with superhuman strength and fury. These were the Berserkers, their name being derived from a Norse word meaning 'bear shirt'. In Greek legend, Zeus fell in love with the huntress Callisto, and she bore him a son named Arcas. In a fit of jealous rage, Zeus's wife turned Callisto into a bear. Time passed, and one day Arcas was out hunting. How was he to know that the bear he was stalking was his own mother?! On seeing that Callisto's life was in danger, Zeus whisked her up into the night sky out of harm's way. She can still be seen in the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. (In another version, Arcas is also sent skywards, and becomes the adjacent Ursa Minor, the Little Bear.) The Big Dipper, or Plough, is one of the more familiar groups of stars within this constellation. Interestingly, the Druidic name for this group was Arthur's Plough, and the constellation was also seen as a bear in Native American and Hebrew tradition. In Native American folklore there are many tales about bears. It is highly respected as the 'keeper of dreams', and 'the keeper of medicine', and is one of the most powerful totems. (Bears hibernate, giving them associations with the world of dreams.) Human fascination with this animal has not always worked in the bear's favour. The bear appears in the names of many English pubs, and this is thought to be a hangover from the days bear-baiting - medieval 'entertainment' which involved tying a bear to a post and setting dogs on it. The Caledonian bear was said to be so fierce that it was favoured by the Romans who used them in their amphitheatres, for similar purposes. In 1902, U.S. President Theodore ('Teddy') Roosevelt was on a hunting trip along the Mississippi, but showed mercy to an old bear he could have easily taken as a trophy. The story of this act spread quickly, and the Teddy Bear was born. Thank you visiting and learning more about the Caledonian Forest. If you've found this information useful please consider making a donation so we can continue our work to restore this globally unique landscape. Bears still make an appearance in recent literature. Beorn in Tolkien's The Hobbit was a man who could take the shape of a bear, echoing ancient shamanic practices. And who could forget wise old Baloo, the teacher of the wolf cubs from Kipling'sJungle Book, Paddington Bear (think marmalade sandwiches and hard stares), or Winnie the Pooh? More recently, Benjamin Hoff's Tao of Pooh used this unassuming bear to illustrate the Taoist principles of modesty, simplicity, and intuitive, practical wisdom. In Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights, the young heroine, Lyra, befriends a fierce and loyal polar bear king named Iorek Byrnison, helping him to regain his throne.

LIST of REASONS why the GRIZZLY is KING: 1 - The grizzly along with the cave bear was placed above all other animals by the Pleistocene people of Europe, both Neanderthal and H. sapiens. 2 - Bear cults existed in Europe for tens-of-thousands of years. 3 - The grizzly was the highest ranking animal of ancient Europe and heroes and kings were named to honor the great bear. 4 - The grizzly was the true champion of the ancient Roman Circus Games ( arena animal fights ). 5 - The grizzly ( not the tiger ) is the national animal of Russia. 6 - The Americans Indian tribes honored the grizzly, as a god, as a devil, as an ancestor, as a teacher, as a beast to rule over all others. 7 - Early American pioneers viewed Old Ephraim as a ferocious near-indestructible beast like no other on earth. 8 - Bears are ranked among the smartest animals on earth. 9 - Probably no animal the size of a grizzly is as strong. 10- Bears might have the keenest nose of all animals. 11- Primitive peoples observed bears to learn about foods and medicines. Basically none of these reasons are valid. hahaha. Maybe you are a neanderthal too. Not sure. In russia, thats also not a valid reason, there are bears all over russia, not tigers. I heard from waqar kahn tribal people thought the tiger was the king not bear. Americans hold no authority as they only know their own selection of animals. Nor are even humans thousands of years really hold any more authority then us now, limited to their own scope. The bear is a nomination, not the king of beasts.

Paul says: Basically none of these reasons are valid. Valid for what? The people of Europe, as far back as to the early stages of the last Ice Age, ranked the bear above all other animals. This means above the cave lion. In Russia, the bear was chosen as their national symbol at a time when tigers were comparatively abundant. In North America, remember that the grizzly survived when a multitude of big cats went extinct. There is really no "King of Beasts" but merely animals ranked by mankind, one above another. Historically, where the brown bear and cave bear lived, they were always place at the top by the peoples of the time. in Africa it was sometimes the lion and sometimes the elephant. Southern Asia the tiger or the elephant.

Paul says: Comparatively abundant, and nowhere near soviets buddy. Russians, bolcheviks, and so on, are all eastern european. Why would you want to go back and see what a bunch of monkeys thought thousands of years ago. Who is talking about thousands of years ago? ( although the bear was king then ). What about in the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s? And why would I care? In other words you are asking... why do schools teach history?

Paul says: The bear is a nomination, not the king of beasts. Truth: Actually the bear was chosen by the multitudes. The lion was nominated by the Church as a replacement animal in their efforts to end the wide-spread bear cults. Paul says: Why would you want to go back and see what a bunch of monkeys thought thousands of years ago. Truth: This is fan-boy spam.

wikibin.org/articles/agrius-and-oreius.html Agrius and Oreius Agrius and Oreius are characters in Greek mythology who are mentioned by Antoninus Liberalis. Mythology Their story begins with a woman named Polyphonte, a granddaughter of Ares, who went to the mountains and became a chaste follower of Artemis, totally neglecting all kinds of activities presided over by Aphrodite like love and marriage. Aphrodite angrily made the woman fall in love with a bear and mate with it resulting in Artemis' hatred. Artemis turned all the forest animals against Polyphonte so that she had to run back to her father's home, where she gave birth to two half-bear, half-man twins. The gigantic bear twins Agrius and Oreius were cannibals and disrespectful towards gods and humans. Zeus ordered Hermes to punish the two in whatever way the latter pleased. Hermes at first decided to dismember them, but Ares did not want this to happen to his grandsons. Instead, Hermes and Ares turned the twins into carnivorous birds where Agrius was turned into a vulture and Orius was turned into an eagle owl. Popular culture * Agrius and Oreius appear in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians book The Sea of Monsters. They are shown to be in the services of Luke Castellan. In Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, their position as Luke's henchmen in the book was replaced by a Manticore.

shaggygod.proboards.com/ China The totem of the ancestor The three jade bears excavated from the Yin Xu Fuhao Tomb of An Yang of He Nan province are the earliest examples bear artwork known today. At the end of July of 2010, one of the three jade bears was exhibited at the Capital Museum in an exhibit about archaeological work in China. The jade bear vividly depicted the image of a bear, setting an example for the later works of the the Han Dynasty. There is a long history behind the use of the bear as a totem. In the Shang Dynasty, people used the bird as a totem. After that, the Shu Emperor of the Shang Dynasty made the silkworm his totem. In ancient times, people of the eastern tribes and the Shennong ethnic minorities used dragon as their totem. When the Yan Emperor and Yellow Emperor began to govern the country, they made great contributions to the integration of the ethnic groups. What is more, the Yellow Emperor built his capital at Xinzheng, where had some bears. Therefore, he was also called “You Xiongshi,” meaning “Bear Emperor.” It was said that the Chinese myth of “Shan Hai ching,” which was deeply loved and praised by Lu Xun, a famous Chinese writer, was written for the Chu people of the Warring States Period. The story begins with a high mountain, called the Bear Mountain. There were many caves in the mountain, where bears lived and the immortals always went there to play with bears. In the summer, the doors of the caves were open, while in winter, the doors of the caves were closed. If the doors of the caves were open in the winter, turmoil and disaster would occur. Therefore, there was some relation between the bear and divinity that could decide the wealth or woe of the common people. Although it was a myth, people in ancient times believed it, and the bear totem commanded great respect at that time. It was recorded in the work “Zuo Zhuan” that the Chu Cheng king ate a bear’s paw before he killed himself after he lost a battle. It was also once believed that the oldest ancestor of the Xia ethnic group became a bear after he died. It is therefore clear that people in ancient times showed great favor and respect to the bear. The people of the the Han Dynasty also respected the bear The people of the the Han Dynasty continued the folk customs of the Chu dynasty. Therefore, it is certain that the people of the the Han Dynasty loved and respected the bear. Many cultural relics of the the Han Dynasty excavated from tombs like Zeng Hongji and Ma Wangdui involved images of bears. Most of the artistic works delineated a bear’s shape extremely vividly and nicely.

Nice info Brobear. Just more and more proof that the bear was the original king of the beasts. Even in china, where today the bear is not respected because of the bile farms.

Interesting. But what does a bear have to do with that? Some say the holy grail is buried in Oak Island. Not talking about the Holy Grail; talking about King Arthur - as told in BEAR, History of a Fallen King. Just the first 30 minutes or so........
