Kruger Hyena vs Northwestern Wolf
Opinions wanted: do you guys believe that this face-off, male grey wolf vs female spotted hyena is cut-and-dry in favor of the hyena ( popular opinion ), or, do you think that this face-off is debatable?

I think any match up at weight parity is debatable. The Kruger hyena averages around 60 kg, while the NW wolf averages around 56 kg. We know the hyena bites harder. We know the wolf is smarter. With my limited knowledge on these 2 animals, i would say 50% although my opinion can change seeing other opinions.
I would love to see our wolf expert thenormalguy give his opinion on this.

Quote: We know the wolf is smarter. *This too is debatable. The wolf is smart; smarter than his domesticated brothers and sisters. But, is has also been discovered that hyenas are surprisingly intelligent.

i would definitely favor the hyena; its far more durable, with much stronger jaws and size advantage.

We have the cunning and intelligence of the Grey Wolf and the jaw power of the Hyena. I would also give speed to the Wolf. Tough call IMO.

The hyena seems to be more aggressive; more willing to take risks. Africa seems to have that effect on her wildlife. But considering this is a face-off where each is determined to kill the other, I'm at a loss. The hyena has a bone-crushing bite. But the jaws of a wolf are no joke. Speed to the wolf. Durability to the hyena. Stamina... my guess would go to the distance runner; the wolf. Endurance to pain and injury; probably goes to the hyena. If there were wolf packs and hyena clans all together in one great wilderness; which would dominate a carcass?

My guess whoever gets the bite to the throat first wins.

I posted some time ago a picture and story of a Grey wolf and a Cougar who were locked in a battle. The Wolf had the Cougar dead to rights, had him by the throat. Until... he made the fatal mistake of letting up slightly and the Cougar did a reversal, but the Cougar DIDN'T make that same mistake and the Wolf was dispatched. Lions are kind of like that when they get a good throat bite they can be tossed about and still maintain their bite on the throat. It may take some time but the prey usually suffocates and dies.

Quote: The Wolf had the Cougar dead to rights, had him by the throat. Until... he made the fatal mistake of letting up slightly... *Neither canines nor bears normally strangle their prey. Instead, they rip and tear flesh. The wolf ( or bear ) will usually bite down hard then start twisting his head back and forth as he pulls and tugs and rips flesh. ( IMO ) canines and bears kill in a more savage manner, but cats have a more refined system of killing; like a well-trained Ninja. Back on topic... both the wolf and the hyena are in the "savage class" of killers. *Edit and add: I believe that the cat's "bite force" is directed towards maintaining a powerful grip with those strong jaws, to strangle or suffocate prey.

Grey wolf vs Spotted hyena. King vs Queen. The pack vs the clan. Who rules?

Grey wolf vs Spotted hyena. King vs Queen. The pack vs the clan. Who rules? What is clear is 2 things.
#1) the weight difference is very very little, so that wont be a major factor.
#2) wolf packs work in a much better coordinated way.

I would love to see our wolf expert thenormalguy give his opinion on this. Sorry to disappoint, but the average hyena bigger than most large males wolves, 60 kg being 132 lbs, i don't feel like there is a lot of chance for the wolf. I mean, it is close to being a mismatch at that size. Of more than 220 wolves weighed in YNP that i know their weights, only about 15 did reach 130 lbs or more. (I think 7 of those were exactly 130 lbs). One more thing, NW wolves do not average 123 lbs (56 kg).

If there were wolf packs and hyena clans all together in one great wilderness; which would dominate a carcass? Hmm. Good question. It would depends on a lot of things, the first being numbers, second size & third age class and gender (males wolves being better in brawls, while matriarchs or female hyenas are supposedly better at brawling. The latter i can't confirm since i don't have a lot of knowledge about hyenas). I think wolves were said to be more socially cohesive and efficient than clans of hyenas, but i can't confirm & i do not want to spend hours looking for this.

No dont worry am not disappointed, ha ha ha, i dont even care about the outcome of this match up. We know hyenas are larger, but how much larger? Because not every weight advantage is a decisive one.

^10-20 kg on females wolves & about 10 kg on males 10 kg (22 lbs), so the weight advantage is basically nothing, that's out of the question here, that is basically weight parity.
For me, in my own opinion, regarding weight advantage, 20-80 lbs is nothing, 100-150 lbs is a pretty good advantage, but still not decisive. 200+ lbs is very decisive.

Just so you know, being 40 kg and the opponent being 50 kg, your opponent is 20 % heavier. This is the equivalent in term of % of an 200 kg bear facing a 250 kg bear.
At 40 kg vs 60 kg, the hyena would have a 33 % weight advantage or 133 % the size of the wolf. That's the equivalent of an 200 kg bear facing an 300 kg bear.
This is an huge advantage.

Thing is you are looking at it percentage wise, but still, 22 lbs is nothing bro really, there is no way that's an advantage in a fight.

Ok, it is still facing an animal 6/5 times its size. To me, it is a great advantage.
