Pictured: Bengal Tiger vs Polar Bear (Sow) Tiger vs full-grown male polar bear is a "No-Contest" face-off - the polar bear wins 19 out of 20. At least tiger vs polar bear sow is debatable.

Average mature female polar bear (5 years+) - 485 pounds. Average mature Amur tiger (contemporary) - 418.9 pounds. Average mature Amur tiger (historical) - 477.3 pounds.

Reply 1. I would have the male polar bear beats a male Amur tiger 20/20 as it is much heavier and removing room for the surprise kill. A female polar bear is still heavier than an Amur tiger and would still win.
The tiger does have a 2-3/10 chance to beat a female polar bear depending on weight range.

Good thread. At averages, the polar saw is larger by around 65 lbs, but that is not a deciding weight advantage. (I always use a 200+ lbs weight advantage as a very deciding factor). In terms of the other advantages, they might be around equal as we are talking about a sow. The bear should still have better grappling skills, stamina, and be more durable. The tiger should have the higher bite force, faster, and more agility. Strength? Who knows, maybe around equal. I am thinking the polar bear sow takes this 6/10 times.

There are always those freak incidents; an accidental win. A "Quirk". I agree King Kodiak. A 65-pound advantage is no advantage in this weight-range. It's basically a weight-parity face-off. I give it a 50/50.

Most posters support even a female polar bear over a male Amur tiger.

On this site; polar bear has the tiger beat 9 to 3. If most posters favor a polar bear sow over a male Siberian tiger, then why even make a male polar bear vs a male Siberian tiger thread? Its ridiculous think about it.

I'm going to give this a 50/50. The primary reason is because polar bears are purely carnivorous. I don't think it will be the same as fighting an omnivorous less aggressive brown bear.
Depends on the individual male tiger and the individual female polar bear. A male polar bear would kill and consume a tiger after its over nearly every time no contest.
On Carnivora, there's a few tiger fans that seem to think that a 400-500 lb tiger could actually kill adult brown bears head on and even said that a sub adult tiger managed to kill a large bear and posted 'evidence' from books saying that this happens. Because of this, these people think that a polar bear wouldn't be too much of an issue.
Until I see a video of a tiger fighting a brown bear (of any size or gender really as there is no video that exists of this happening) and actually managing to win head on, I refuse to believe that tigers prey on adult brown bears. Even the claim of them preying on adult females is questionable. No video or photographic evidence of any kind to suggest this other than carcasses that were fed on. Estimations and guesses from people.

Actually female barren ground grizzlies are way more aggressive. Brown bears do not climb as well as black bears and being surrounded by predators makes them fight rather than flee. Female polar bear do defend their cubs to death but are less aggressive than female brown bears in general.

We know exactly who they are, just 2 or 3 tiger fangirls. Ignore them. They cant convince a single soul, look at all the polls.
Could be, but "large" bear is a very wide description when it comes to bears. Usually people exaggerate the description, its called sensationalism. We have pics of bears that looked no more than 400 lbs or even females that were described as "large" or "huge". Anyhow, all that is in the wild, hence it was done by ambush, they dont tell you that little detail.

Quote: a sub adult tiger managed to kill a large bear and posted 'evidence' from books. Quote: Could be, but "large" bear is a very wide description. *Every bear is a "Large Bear". According to Warsaw, there is no confirmed account of a tiger ever killing a bear ( any species ) as big as himself. A tiger will always ambush a bear smaller than himself. With this being said, the tiger would only ambush a juvenile polar bear as prey. However, should a polar bear sow attempt to displace a tiger from a carcass, the tiger might be able to bluff the bear and thus keep his kill.

The biggest brown bear killed by Dale is an Ussuri female almost his own weight but again size parity and weight parity are different.

These people making these books are basically promoting popscience to get people interested into animals and will say wild claims like tigers killing elephants, lions breaking the necks of buffalos with one strike, and that crocodiles are immortal. I understand why they do this since many people are illiterate to science and try to simplify it as much as possible, even if it means flat out making stuff up.

The biggest brown bear killed by Dale is an Ussuri female almost his own weight but again size parity and weight parity are different. Wrong: according to Warsaw. Several biologists on the scene gave their estimates ranging from ( can't remember the exact number ) under 400 pounds and up to ( the biggest estimate ) 440 pounds. In any case, Dale had at that time recently been weighed at 445 pounds. The only bear reported killed by a tiger that was *estimated as being heavier than the ( in this case ) tigress, was a fat juvenile brown bear. Neither the tigress nor the bear were actually weighed. He was estimated at 170kg ( 375 pounds ). Of course, even after Warsaw pretty-much proved the bear to be a juvenile, the Booger remains in denial.

The topic "Polar Bear vs Big Cat" is locked. It is a mismatch. Polar bear wins. No contest. However, Amur tiger vs polar bear sow is rationally debatable.

Good decision Brobear. In this topic here, most think its 50% or favor the polar bear sow by little, like me.

In addition, I would like to say that a male polar bear is much larger and stronger than a smilodon populator as well. That sabre tooth tiger overlaps in weight with a female and would be interesting.
Back to topic, if Dale took 20 minutes to kill a female brown bear even though it is by failed ambush, a larger female polar bear will have a much better chance to win.
