Quote: African Lion vs Grizzly Bear (average sizes as a species). *Curious: Average size as a species; would this include all ( there are many ) subspecies of Ursus arctos in one package?

brobearIt would include all populations of Ursus arctos horribilis and all populations of Panthera leo inhabiting Africa.

The grizzly sow looks way less mascular than her male counterpart. Would you be able to do a size comparison between a female Ussuri brown bear and a lioness too?

Nice shoulder-hump display on the black grizzly she-bear.

The Ussuri brown bear sows are actually quite impressive; they are just slightly longer/taller than grizzly bear sows and outweigh the latter by a good 100lbs.

Here's one for you; a big Gustave-sized Nile crocodile with a big male African lion.

Is it just me or does the Height comparison between the African Lion and the Grizzly look a little off? To me the Lion is just a little too tall or the Grizzly is just a little to short Height wise.

At weight parity a grizzly bear is ~5cm shorter than a lion; the weight advantage of the grizzly at species level would even things out. Don't neglect the mane either, it gives the lion an additional 5cm in this 2D-comparison.

Coastal Grizzly Bear (right) vs Kamchatka Brown Bear (left); two titans going at it. *While logically this would be all about individuality more-so than sub-species, still, I would wager on the grizzly.

brobear Agreeing with you, the coastal brown bear will have a slight weight and thus resulting strength advantage. Nevertheless, I wouldn't rule out the Kamchatka bear here, their skulls are enormous measuring ~420mm in greatest length and ~268mm in zygomatic width while the coastal brown bear measures ~415mm in greatest length and ~245mm in zygomatic width.

Nice 'Taker. I'm surprised that the Javan is larger than the African Black rhinoceros. Never checked it out; just assumed. Most interesting thing ( to me ) about the Sumatran is the fact that he is related to the Woolly Rhino of the Ice Age.

brobear The Javan rhino is slightly taller and a bit heavier than the black rhino; I kept to "Walker's Mammals of the World" in order to have fair comparable data. I'll adjust the comparison later as I did use the model for a female white rhinoceros. Edit: Now it should be as accurate as possible.

At same weight, this match up is really a toss up, 50% in my opinion. The coastal brown "might" be a little more aggressive. But they are both brown bears so they are basically equal morphology speaking.
