theundertaker45: No need for sorry buddy. I basically trust all you say by the way. Your only punishment will be that now you have to calculate the other bears ok. The second largest Simus and the largest Angustidens. And the largest cave bears if you can.

King Kodiak Yes, that will take some time. But I can already tell you that the largest Arctotherium specimen is reliably estimated to weigh ~1100kg; it was both shorter and a bit stockier than Arctodus.

theundertaker45: So its more reliable to make the calculations not only using the Humerus length, but the width also, and also using the Femur correct?

Also in "Extant Bears"; "Brown Bears"; I started a thread attempting to get a rough estimate on the average weight of the brown bear ( Ursus arctos ) as a species. No simple task. It seems, we are putting a workload on 'Taker.

Average tiger; 9 subspecies ( using contemporary Amur tigers ) male- 344.4 pounds / female- 235.65 pounds. ( my findings ) Compare with the lion: Average Panthera leo (species, extant, concluded out of the two present subspecies) - 371.3 pounds for males and 262.6 pounds for females (n=282 and n=267) When averaging the tiger's weight, the population numbers were not taken into account. Therefore, these weight estimates are of tigers in general and off to some extent. Edit and add: When it is said that tigers are larger than lions, this is only a half-truth. The largest subspecies of tiger is larger than the largest subspecies of lion. However, as a species, the average P. leo is larger than the average P. tigris.

Another average we're missing is for the Kamchatka brown bear.

Another average we're missing is for the Kamchatka brown bear. Yeah, very little info on weights. Just general info. All we know is that its larger than the Ussuri brown bear. We have seen some impressive pics.

Average tiger ( as a species ) 396 pounds. In knowing that half or more than half of all living tigers are Bengal tigers, I averaged all the other tiger subspecies; then added this number to the average weight of the Bengal; added that and divided by two. My answer: 396 pounds.

Some updates have been installed on the black bear/cougar weight collections; it seems like American black bears are more or less twice the size of cougars on average.
