A face-off between an Andean bear and a jaguar would be very-near a size-parity face-off. bigcatrescue.org/jaguar-facts/ Size and Appearance: Jags are the largest felines in the Americas. Adult males can reach an overall length of more than 7 feet, and can weigh anywhere from 150 to 200 pounds. As mentioned above, its coat color and markings are very similar to the leopard, with a rich tawny or yellow background with large black rosettes and spots. It has a larger head, more compact body, and much more powerful paws! The Jaguar also occurs with an all black (melanistic) coat, and like the leopard, the spots can still be seen on black individuals. Albino individuals have been reported as well.

Leopards at 200 pounds is exceptionally large. Most male leopards average between 48 to 60 kg depending on geographical. Leopards at 150 pounds like late Tjololo are already considered large.

Ok so before, this thread was black bear vs Jaguar, now its bear vs jaguar.
Brobear, i think the Andean bear weigths less than 330 lbs on average, more closer to 275 lbs, although it can reach more than 400 lbs at max weights:
www.bearsoftheworld.net/spectacled_bears.asp
The south american jaguar averages about 220 lbs, although they can reach weights of 300 lbs:
animaldiversity.org/accounts/Panthera_onca/
So a weight parity fight is possible. The Andean bear is the least studied bear species in the world, but its still a bear and better grappler. So, at weight parity, i would say the Andean bear wins 6/7 out of 10 fights.

Yes, the two would be roughly the same size while the bear ( being a bear - even though not as heavily built as ( say ) a black bear ) will have a slight weight advantage over ( possibly ) the most robust of all living cats ( comparatively at head-and-body length parity ). 275 pound bear vs 220 pound jaguar. My wager is on the bear - also.

Looking at the maps above ( reply #31 and #32 ) it appears that the jaguar prefers low country - lower elevation - while the Andean bear prefers high country - higher elevation. This would mean no confrontations between a jaguar and an Andean bear ( or extremely rare ). The puma, however, thrives in bear country.

The sloth bear hell yeah mate.Consider my "epiphany" that comparing a leopard to a sloth bear is the same size-ration-wise as to compare a tiger to a grizzly. I feel certain that a tiger would wait his turn while a grizzly drinks his fill.

1936: BEAR AND LEOPARD KILLED EACH OTHER IN A DESPERATE FIGHT OVER A GOAT IN SYLHET, ASSAM, (BANGLADESH). AT THAT TIME (1936), THERE WERE 3 SPECIES OF BEAR STILL EXTANT IN BANGLADESH, ASIATIC BLACK BEARS (THE ONLY ONE LEFT), SLOTH BEARS, AND SUN BEARS. Too bad that the "common people" ( majority ) can't tell one bear species from another.
