Ok, this is not the best account for this thread because in this case, the large male tiger defended its kill for a while, there was a fight lasting about 3 minutes. He defended probably because it was a large male tiger of course. Adult male tigers WILL fight and defend their kills. At the end he lost the kill and got chased away though.
As the tiger was retreating, Jim Corbett shot and killed him. Then he shot the bear.

Well, you and I and perhaps a small hand-full of others know that a bear is a better fighter and, even though at weight-parity a smaller animal, equally as strong.

Alot of people like to use the argument that a bear would lose to a tiger or a tiger because bears are often seen running from dogs and small housecats. But what people don't realize is that there are also videos of tigers on youtube running from dogs and we all know that a dog stand no chance against a tiger same as a bear against a dog. I just think it's a stupid argument hat people like to use. RUNNING DOES NOT EQUATE TO LOSING A FIGHT.

There is a video of a female cougar actually chasing away a grizzly bear as she was protecting her cubs. The feline did a good job but it doesn't mean she will win in a face to face fight.

I've seen Cougars run from hounds. Grizzly run from dogs, not sure about that one. I suppose it could happen if he got tired of listening to the mutts barking at him??

There is a video, very popular with cat fans, of a house cat chasing a black bear up a tree. Consider the bear around the "dwelling place of aliens" ( humans ) and not knowing what to expect from those weird creatures. Then out comes this bold little creature. What is it? And the bold little beast charges. The bear retreats. It is called "fear of the unknown."

Some American black bears still carry the "V" on their chest, or at least remnants of it. V for Vengance? Vigilante? There has been no big cats in N. America for over ten thousand years. The mark is vanishing. <iframe width="13.779999999999973" height="20.200000000000045" style="position: absolute; width: 13.779999999999973px; height: 20.200000000000045px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 59px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_74766319" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="13.779999999999973" height="20.200000000000045" style="position: absolute; width: 13.78px; height: 20.2px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 629px; top: 59px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_11715405" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="13.779999999999973" height="20.200000000000045" style="position: absolute; width: 13.78px; height: 20.2px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 997px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_53632452" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="13.779999999999973" height="20.200000000000045" style="position: absolute; width: 13.78px; height: 20.2px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 629px; top: 997px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_11850506" scrolling="no"></iframe>

i would say more like Vengeance. And as for your theory, i like how you look at details that no one else would see. You have a great point though and i agree. Its an amazing theory brobear.

Asiatic black bears have several large predators to contend with.

I would have guessed also that the book is talking about a himalayan brown bear, not black. As the book did not specify. This shows also that other smaller brown bear subspecies can also displace tigers from its kills. Do you have accounts of the tibetan blue bear displacing tigers from kills. I beleive they can judging by their aggression.

Yes, that would have to be the aggressive Tibetan blue bear and not the more timid Himalayan red bear ( IMO ).
