A great choice. I probably got more insight on the "real grizzly" from Doug Peacock than from any other author. An interesting comparison that just struck me this morning as I was remembering "Grizzly Years"... In his book, Doug tells of a grizzly charging towards him. In remembering that he had learned that if you turn your back to a charging horse, the horse will usually stop. He no longer sees you as a threat. It took a lot of courage for Doug to try this on a grizzly. But, it worked. ( Just the opposite with a tiger ). Doug, through extremely dangerous methods, learned of a grizzly bluff-charge. He learned about grizzly "personal space" and so much more. Doug Peacock's studies in the field made it much safer for future naturalists and biologists. He is still fighting the good fight to protect grizzlies.

For someone with a collection; this should be a top priority addition. Also, there probably is some great information gathered by Timothy.

I think the most important book about the history of bears is History of a fallen king, plus, this book totally ended the bear vs lion debate. California grizzly is the most important book about that subspecies and also about the California pit fights. Grizzly years by Doug Peacock takes you up and close to the bears in the wild.

This man, straight out of the jungles and rice-paddies of Vietnam into the wilderness of Montana. He got to know the grizzlies almost on a personal level. Lots of great stuff here.

One of several I read about the historical grizzly. Not a bad read. Cover picture I believe is artwork of Hugh Glass.

We had this topic. Seems to be lost. Here is a book worth reading. A smaller book, aimed at kids ( ages 10 to 15 ) but very good information.

I enjoyed reading the 'Great Bear of Almanac' especially the part where the polar bear attacked a bowhead whale despite failing to kill it.
