www.russianrail.com/news/bears_and_russia.html BEARS AND RUSSIA Today I want to talk a bit about bears and there association with Russia. The bear is one of the most common figures associated with Russia, and it can be seen in many Russian symbols. The Russian bear is a national personification for Russia, used in cartoons, fairy tales, and dramatic plays since at least the 17th century. After the fall of the Soviet Union, there was even some discussion in the Russian Parliament of having a bear as the new Russian coat of arms, however it was the Tsarist coat of arms of the double-headed eagle that was restored. Russians also use the term for human-like characteristics also, a clumsy but kind person and be referred to as a bear. To the right you can see a huge flag displayed at a 2008 European qualifier in Moscow, the flag depicts a strong fearsome Russian bear along with the writing "Go Russia!" For the 1980 Olympic Games held in Moscow, Russia chose the Russian teddy bear "Misha" as the mascot. Both Russians and the outside world identify Russia with the bear, Misha just helped to shape this view in a positive way as a small, cuddly and smiling bear, as opposed to a big, brutal, and clumsy bear. The bear has also been depicted with the 2014 Winter Olympics that will be held in the southern Russian city of Sochi. The bear was also taken up as the symbol of the United Russia Party, which has dominated the political life in Russia since the early 2000s. And coincidentally, in 2008 Dmitry Medvedeev, whose name means bear in Russian, was elected president. It is also a popular stereotype that if you go to Russia you'll see bears walking on the streets. Well, unfortunately, when you come visit you wont see any bears on the streets, you'll have to go to the zoo for that. However, there are several types of bears that do live in Russia. Mostly brown bears live in Russia, and there are many subspecies with various names, here are a few of them: The Eurasian Brown Bear, also known as the common brown bear. The largest brown bear population in world can be found in Russia, east of the Ural mountain range, in the large Siberian forests. The Kamchatka Brown Bear, also known as the Far Eastern Brown Bear. This subspecies of brown bear is native to the Anadyrsky District, the Kamchatka Peninsula, Karaginskiy Island, the Kuril Islands, the coastal strip west of the Sea of Okhotsk southward to the Stanovoy Range and the Shantar Islands. Ussuri Brown Bear, also known as the black grizzly. He can be found in the Ussuri krai, Sakhalin, the Amur Oblast. The Ainu people, an indigenous group in Japan and Russia, worshipped the Ussuri brown bear, eating its flesh and drinking its blood as part of a religious festival known as iomante. And of course the Russian Polar Bear, which lives in the Russian Arctic.

To me the bear especially the grizzly bear sow represents maternal spirit a creature that on the surface appears fearsome and almost monstrous but in reality is nurturing and above all dedicated to a worthy goal. In many old and new world indigenous cultures bears were linked to women in Finland there were folk beliefs that thought bears that were slain wished to be reborn as women and that they would abstain from attacking a female human. The Haida people of the west coast of North America are a First Nations people who had a myth involving a woman who had a love affair with a grizzly bear which if i remember correctly resulted in a people descendent partly from the bear. Besides there strength and human like physical features two things that people covet and relate two. There devotion to there young and patiences that they show towards them as well as the species great adaptability are three things I value and hold in respect above all the rest. Bears are many things to many people fantastic beasts to be Slain like dragons and often in men’s minds just as much myth as a basilisk. Ancestors or gods in the flesh who visit our realm of reality Maybe at times even offering there own flesh to the people in a sacrificial sense. or perhaps to some people who have been alienated from nature cute and funny picnic stealing clowns. But to me personally they invoke a protective maternal spirit that gives me strength and something to inspire to and more so then ever since my little one came to me. black bears and grizzlys were indeed differentiated mukwa translates to bear and Misabe mukwa means grizzly bear in Anishinaabemowin. It should be noted that some Indigenous groups native to California shied away from grizzly bear spiritual power and helpers becuase it’s power was considered to volatile were as black bear spirits were a better match for a family man. Below I included some interesting links which touch upon and confirm my personal perspective on these majestic creatures. journal.fi/temenos/article/download/4591/12446src-h.slav.hokudai.ac.jp/publictn/acta/20/asi20-001-ruor.uottawa.ca/handle/10393/9943

Knowledge and the Sacred, chapter Cosmos of the theopany- by Hussain Nasr
"In Indians not only sees the bear or the eagle as divine presence also has a knowledge of what might call the eagle-ness of the eagle and the bear-ness of the bear as if he saw in these being as platonic archetypes."

Wikipedia- Syrian brown bear (In culture)
"The Syrian brown bear is the bear mentioned in the Bible. The protectiveness of a mother bear towards her cubs is cited proverbially three times (2 Sam. 17:8; Prov. 17:12; Hos. 13:8) in the Hebrew Bible. The Syrian brown bear is also mentioned in 2 Kings 2:23-25 mauling 42 children who were teasing Elisha regarding his hairline."

To me, bears also symbolize patience. In koreans, bear were a symbol of patience. In my country, bears that are kept by people are really unhealthy and in poor condition and eat very little but despite of that they never attacked their masters to kill and eat them. Patience is also a bear quality.
