A bear symbolize power and brute strength to me. A bear is so peaceful but so strong with the power of like a god in the (animal kingdom).

REAL GRIZZLIES HAVE HEALTHY HEARTS, DO NOT DIE OF CANCER, AND HAVE FEWER PARASITES THAN HUMANS DURING AN AVERAGE LIFETIME. TO THE ANCIENT BLACKFEET THE GRIZZLY, WHOM THEY CALLED REAL BEAR, WAS THE MOST ESTEEMED OF ALL ANIMALS.

Bears also represent judgement.

Real Bear was given the same names by tribal cultures throughout circumpolar Europe, Asia, and North America: Old Grandfather, Old Man, Old Honey Paws, and Crooked Tail. This would mean he was the same in all eyes of primitive people. Quote: To the ancient Blackfeet the grizzly, whom they called Real Bear, was the most esteemed of all animals.

Sounds to me like we have a worldwide trend here as far as the primitive people are concerned.

It seems the bears are also related to maturity and wisdom judging from the names given.

King Kodiak, TrueWhiteBjorn, and myself agree. Primitive people knew their local wildlife in ways unknown to park rangers and biologists. They knew them on a more personal and even spiritual level. Even when the land was occupied by mega-fauna and huge predators, they all ( Europe, Asia, and America ) knew that the bear stood on a level all his own. His place ( according to my readings ) was connected to the realm of beasts, the realm of humans, and the spirit realm. Only the bear dwells in this place.

THE BLACKFEET AND THEIR NEIGHBOURS ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE DIVINE REVERED THE GRIZZLY AND NEVER HUNTED HIM DURING HIBERNATION. THEY SAW HIM MORE AS A HEALER THAN A THREAT. AS THE MEDICINE GRIZZLY.

Good to see there are at least people who do not hunt the bear for sport. Calling a grizzly 'Medicine grizzly' makes sense as they never suffered from obesity like man does but they might have a cure for that which is becoming more and more prevalent in modern days society.

The book: Bear-ology explains the medicine bear. Some animals learn to cure themselves through natural medicines. No animal is more adapt at this than the bear. I'm not talking merely about like a dog eating grass to make himself throw-up. No. I'm talking about a bear seeking out specific herbs, roots, etc. for specific ailments. Mama bear is a teacher. Information is passed down from bear to bear. The American Indians ( some cultures ) believed that the original shamans were taught medicine by a bear. There may be some fact to this legend. Shamans could have observed bears and learned from them.

Awesome. It's nice to know that bears were actually revered and respected. I notice that indians have great respect for two animals which are bears and wolves.

In the old ways, they respected life in general, but held in high esteem the bear, the wolf, the bison, the eagle, and the raven. Great culture.

I think they respect grizzly bears the most that's why the cartoon 'Brother Bear' was made. On side note: Inuites neleive the polar bear spirit is the most powerful spirit in their culture. They also beleive it is forbidden to hunt another polar bear too soon as the polar bear spirit must be given time to rest.

No worries but I suggest checking it out quickly before it is removed from you tube. My almost-2-year-old grandson, "Bam Bam" sat on Grandpa's lab yesterday and we watched "Brother Bear 2".
