That is heavier than an average leopard overall (only 2 pounds lighter than the average male leopard from MalaMala or the Sabi Sands) and slightly lighter than the North American cougar.

I see that the most important document on sun bears hasn't been shared here so far; it's from the global status review on them; I'll attach the whole document below: www.cpsg.org/sites/cbsg.org/files/documents/Sun_bears_-_Global_status_review_conservation_action_plan_2019-2028_UNABRIDGED_B.pdfA short summary on their size taken from this document: "Weights among sun bears also vary by the availability of foods: wild bears with access to oil palm fruits tend to be heavier (Table 1), whereas those subsisting on wild foods during periods of fruiting failure are very thin, and may even die of starvation (Wong et al. 2005, Fredriksson 2012). The heaviest wild sun bears for which there are data were males on the mainland with access to oil palm fruits (average ~75–80 kg). Males in Borneo consuming only wild foods averaged ~40 kg while Bornean females averaged only ~25 kg when weighed mainly during lean fruiting periods (Table 1). Healthy adults in captivity at a rescue facility in Cambodia are typically ~70 kg for males, and 10 kg less for females (Free the Bears, unpublished data, 2018). Weights of these bears recorded throughout the year over the course of 13 years (>5,600 weight measurements) revealed that adult females varied little seasonally, whereas males exhibited a pronounced (but as yet unexplained) fluctuation, with a decline (~12%) during March–May (J.P. Whiteman/Free the Bears, unpublished data, 2018)."
And the weight table in addition:
Based on this table the total average for sun bears with relatively poor food sources in terms of nutritional value would be ~46.44kg for males (n=9; 34-59kg) and ~28.75kg (n=8; 20-39kg) for females. However, five male sun bears from Malaysia having a rich diet filled with oil palm fruits averaged a stunning ~78.6kg; compare that to the poorly fed Bornean sun bears averaging ~43kg. That's a weight increase of over 35kg which is a whole lot in this weight class. Like in every animal size is largely dependant on food and under optimal conditions a male sun bear can surely achieve the size of a female black bear; so the official maximum weight is ~87kg and has to be quoted in the future.
I'll split it up more carefully below: Bornean Sun Bear (poor diet)Average Weight: 43.17kg for males (34-56kg; n=6); 26kg for females (20-30kg; n=6) Bornean Sun Bear (rich diet)
Average Weight: 53kg for males (47-59kg; n=3); 37.5kg for females (35-39kg; n=2) Malayan Sun Bear (rich diet)
Average Weight: 78.6kg for males (72-87kg; n=5)

Very nice post there Undertaker. This is most likely the first time i see scientific weights of sun bears. And am surprised this subspecies above averages 78.6 kg (173 lbs).

文中记载的最大马来熊头骨为55cm,马来熊的上限可能被世界低估了。

I agree that both the biggest male orang utans and both genders of sun bears are too much for the clouded leopard but they do not hunt the clouded leopard either. I hope accounts of kill disputes arrive soon. Size does matter though .
