Of course not. A 2 year old brown bear is a cub. He becomes a subadult at around 2.5 years. Basics - page #1... Reply #2: Giant pandas reach breeding maturity between four and eight years of age. Basics - page #2... Reply #26: The giant panda reaches breeding maturity between 4 and 10 years of age. *Therefore a giant panda is not a sub-adult until at least age 4 ( probably a little older ). Right, but we were talking about the account of the snow leopard that killed a 2 year old Himalayan brown bear.

OMG! I hate it when I post ( or think I did; but forget to hit "post quick reply". Mostly because I hate backtracking........................................................................ OK.... a brown bear reaches sexual maturity at from 4.5 to 5 years old.... we got that... OK. A brown bear is not considered a full-grown bear until from 9 to 10 years old ( according to which expert you're talking to ). I happen to agree with Doug Peacock among others. So... a brown bear becomes a sub-adult at ( roughly ) his 5th Birthday and remains a sub-adult ( IMO ) until ( roughly ) his 9th Birthday.

So you think a 4 year old brown bear is still a cub? No brobear, we already went thru this many times, its like this basically for brown bears:
0 to 2.5 years-cub 2.5 to 5 years-subadult 5 to 9 years-adult but not fully grown 9 + years-adult and fully grown.

I completely understand your train of thought Kodiak; but here is why I disagree: If a tiger kills a 5-year old male brown bear... Hell no. I would not say that this tiger killed an adult grizzly boar. That 5 or 6 year old bear is the equivalent of a 12 or 13 year old boy. Until a brown bear can be called a full-grown bear, he is ( IMO ) a sub-adult. By the way, Doug Peacock once referred to an 8-year old grizzly as a sub-adult. *But this is ( no doubt ) one of those topics where we are going to disagree. So be it.

Its just a game of words brobear. The problem is that a 5 year old brown bear is considered an "adult" already. But in this case, the adults keep growing. He is an adult in everything but not physically. Not full grown bonewise or weightwise.

This study is from 1975 - 1985. Now consider that the wolf was reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995 and since then the bears have enjoyed a diet of more meat. At this time the average mature male grizzly ( 9+ years old ) weighed 491 pounds. Probably a tad higher now. The 5 year old male weighs 149 kg or 328.5 pounds. This is within the tiger's prey-sized bears.

familydoctor.org/boys-and-puberty/ The timing of puberty is different for each boy. However, it usually starts between the ages of 9 and 16. Boys generally start puberty two years later than girls. This can be frustrating for boys as they watch girls maturing and growing taller. Definition of puberty: The period or age at which a person is first capable of sexual reproduction of children. *I believe that 12 or 13 are probably the more common ages when boys begin puberty. For a brown bear normally 4.5 or 5 years. Biologists separate the adult bears from the cubs according to sexual development. A game of words as you put it; but I would not consider 12 and 13 year-old boys as being ready for the draft board.

American black bear - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_black_bear#Reproduction_and_development Sows usually produce their first litter at the age of three to five years, with those living in more developed areas tending to get pregnant at younger ages.[69] The breeding period usually occurs in the June–July period, though it can extend to August in the species' northern range. The breeding period lasts for two to three months. Both sexes are promiscuous. Males try to mate with several females, but large, dominant ones may violently claim a female if another mature male comes near. Sows tend to be short-tempered with their mates after copulating. The fertilized eggs undergo delayed development and do not implant in the female's womb until November. The gestation period lasts 235 days and litters are usually born in late January to early February. Litter size is between one and six cubs, typically two or three.[70] At birth, cubs weigh 280–450 g (0.62–0.99 lb) and measure 20.5 cm (8.1 in) in length. They are born with fine, gray, down-like hair and their hind quarters are underdeveloped. They typically open their eyes after 28–40 days and begin walking after five weeks. Cubs are dependent on their mother's milk for 30 weeks and will reach independence at 16–18 months. At the age of six weeks, they attain 900 g (2.0 lb), by the age of eight weeks they reach 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) and by the age of six months they weigh 18 to 27 kg (40 to 60 lb). They reach sexual maturity at the age of three years and attain their full growth at the age of five years.

Reply 2335. A three year old Ussuri brown bear is considered an adult only because it is independent and left its mother not because it is fully grown. A two year old tiger has reached sexual maturity something a bear at similar age or slightly older has not.

0 to 2.5 years-cub. 2.5 to 5 years-subadult. 5 to 8 years-adult but not fully grown. 9+ years-adult and fully grown.Until we recieve a biologists ruling on this, its all opinion. But I pretty-much agree with your's. Newborn thru 3rd birthday - cub. From 3 thru 5th birthday - subadult juvenile. From 5 thru 8 years old - young adult. From 9 thru 20 years old - full-grown boar. 20+ years old - an old boar.

That is the opinion from most biologists and most books that i read. That is basically what it is for brown bears. But yeah, i agree with yours also.

From 3 thru 5th birthday - subadult juvenile, as you mentioned, are suddenly on their own. In Russia, this is the age of brown bears that tigers are looking for. These young bears must be on constant alert for both tigers and full-grown boar grizzlies.

Newborn thru 3rd birthday - cub. ( first 2 years protected by and learning from his mother ).
From 3 thru 5th birthday - subadult juvenile. ( basically an older cub without his mother's protection - most vulnerable years ).
From 5 thru 8 years old - young adult. ( sexually mature but not yet strong enough to compete for choice foods or for a female ).
From 9 thru 20 years old - full-grown boar. ( Boss of the Woods / King of the Mountain ).
20+ years old - an old boar. ( during this decade he will be dethroned from his high status ).

The reason why the article called the 3 year old brown bear an adult is because of poor translation. Plenty of articles are poorly translated in English.

The reason why the article called the 3 year old brown bear an adult is because of poor translation. Plenty of articles are poorly translated in English. Yeah, could be. Also, if one article says "adult" but all the other articles say "2-3" year old bear, then you know there is a problem because the articles dont match at all. Anyhow, we know from the best source on the interactions in the RFE, The Siberian tiger project, that they found zero adult male brown bears killed by tigers in the period 1992-2013 (their study period), so it was obviously a small subadult bear. One article even says they dont even know if it was brown or black bear.

From: Tiger vs Grizzly Reply #26 5b - Size: Male brown bears are sexually mature at about 5 years of age, but continue to grow until they are about 12 years of age and seem to put on weight even after that (posts 29, 283, 288, 315, 364, 370, 391, 394, 395, 408). The statistics available (on the growth rate of young and adolescent animals and the differences in size between sexually mature and full-grown males from North-America), indicate young animals can easily double their weight in a period of two years (Warsaw, jan. 16, 2010, 21:10:10). They also indicate there is a significant difference in skull size and weight between adult and full-grown male brown bears.

Reply 34. It seems the American black bear reached its full grown stage faster than the brown and polar bears.

seaworld.org/animals/all-about/tiger/reproduction/ Quote: Females reach sexual maturity around 3 to 4 years of age and males mature at about 4 to 5 years of age. www.livescience.com/27441-tigers.html At just 8 weeks old, tiger cubs are ready to learn how to hunt and go out on hunting expeditions with their mother. At 2 years old, the cubs will set out on their own, and their mother will be ready for another set of cubs. In the wild, tigers typically live 10 to 15 years, according to Smithsonian's National Zoo. Goggle, "growth rate of a tiger" or "Age of a full-grown tiger" and you will receive answers light-years from the question asked. !
