Novel: The Grizzly King (1916) by American author James Oliver Curwood. Movie adaptation: The Bear - 1988. This tale is based on real life events. A mother grizzly was digging into a mountainside, causing rocks to fall down, killing her. Thus leaving her one cub as an orphan. That is a sad story 😢. At least the cub survived and a male bear took her under his wing.

The "when is a full grown brown bear" debate is over, hard research pays off. Here is the best Kodiak bear expert Will Troyer stating that Kodiaks gain weight until at least 10 years old. See time frame between 42:40 and 43:40.
*The No.#1 grizzly expert, Doug Peacock, also considers 10 years old to be the age of a full-grown male brown bear.

From "Great Apes Longevity and Maturity" -quote: "Free-ranging mountain gorilla males are fully grown at approximately 15 years of age." Full-grown brown bear 10 years old and full-grown gorilla 15 years old. Its easier with the bull gorilla though - a silver back

Out of all land mammals it seems that apes are one of the few animals that take longer to reach full size than bears.

www.jstor.org/stable/3873016?seq=1 wildfact.com/forum/ - Black Bears. "We designated bears in their second year of life as yearlings, 2- and 3- year olds as subadults, and >4-year olds as adults" *Note: we know that a black bear is not a full-grown bear at the age of two. I would assume that the Moon Bears are designated in this same manner. Average adult bears including bears 4 years old and up. A full grown male moon bear probably being 8 or 9 years old.

wildfact.com/forum/ - ON THE EDGE OF EXTINCTION - A - THE TIGER (Panthera tigris) - by Peter: The difference between young adults (5-8 years of age) and mature adults (9 years and over) is pronounced. Mature bears are not longer, but heavier. In males in particular, the difference is outspoken. Individual variation in both males and females is significant.

Reply #187, i have seen that post by Peter before. But why do you always post the link to the Wildfact forum main page? Why dont you post the link to the actual post? All you have to do is click on the post # and copy the link. Sometimes that does not work so you would copy the link to the page number of the thread. But the link to the forum takes us nowhere near the post you are trying to show.

www.sci-news.com/biology/dna-based-clock-maximum-lifespan-living-extinct-vertebrates-07910.html DNA-Based ‘Clock’ Predicts Maximum Lifespan in Living and Extinct Vertebrates. A team of researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, has developed a simple new method for estimating the lifespans of different vertebrate species. Using their method and human genome sequences, the scientists estimated that our species has a ‘natural’ lifespan of 38 years; they also found that our extinct cousins, Neanderthals and Denisovans, probably lived around 37.8 years, and that woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) had a maximum lifespan of 60 years.

familydoctor.org/boys-and-puberty/ Quote: "Most boys experience puberty between the ages of 9 and 16." When biologists are conducting their studies of individual brown bear populations, which includes health, population numbers, and so on, Some bears are darted and examined, which includes measurements and weight. They give average weights to the different age groups. In this, all male bears 5 years old and up are listed as adult. I find this to be very frustrating. If 12 year old boys were considered adults, they would be driving automobiles and serving in the military. A male brown bear is full-grown between the ages of 9 and 10 years old.

The Growing Child: Adolescent 13 to 18 Years. www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/the-growing-child-adolescent-13-to-18-years. How much will my adolescent grow? The teenage years are also called adolescence. Adolescence is a time for growth spurts and puberty changes. An adolescent may grow several inches in several months followed by a period of very slow growth, then have another growth spurt. Changes with puberty (sexual maturation) may happen gradually or several signs may become visible at the same time. There is a great amount of variation in the rate of changes that may happen. Some teenagers may experience these signs of maturity sooner or later than others. - Beginning of puberty: 9.5 to 14 years old. _________________________________________________________________________ *Now, imagine that a group of "men" were gathered and weighed, within each of the 50 states, to establish the average weight of grown men in the U.S.A. *Now imagine that mixed within this group are boys from ages 10 years and up. Wouldn't that offset the actual weight of the average full-grown man? Of course it would. This same thing is done in every biologists' study on brown bear populations. Their average weights and measurements include bears which have barely reached puberty ( 4.5 to 5 years old ). So, to find the actual average weight, we must add-up the weights of bears from 9 years old and up. Below 9 years old are young adults ( adolescent ) not yet fully grown.

"Blanchard (in press) found that in Yellowstone National Park, male grizzlies were consistently heavier than females for all age classes except cubs and yearlings. SexÂual dimorphism beginning at age 2 was also apparent in other study areas (Troyer and Hensel 1969, Pearson 1975). Males in Yellowstone steadily gained weight until at least 15 years, but the mean annual rate of weight increase for males aged 4-15 (5.6%) was much less than the rate for cubs through 3 years (42.1%). The mean weight of adult males was 29% greater than for females and body measurements were 8-17% greater. Males attained full size in 7 of 11 body measurements by age 6 and in all 11 by age 9." SOURCE: Grizzly Bear Compendium (1987) by the Inter agency Grizzly Bear Committee. *Spotlight: Quote, "Males attained full size in all 11 body measurements by age 9. ( No male brown bear should be considered as full-grown until at least 9 years old )

Simply a choice of wording and/or categorizing. Remember too that there is much (especially where bears are concerned), that the top experts disagree on. Therefore, there are no rules carved in stone concerning the categorizing of bear according to age. So, this is my view of things: Male Brown Bear. 0 until his first year - cub. 1 year until he reaches 2 - yearling. 2 years old until he reaches 4.5 years old - adolescent or juvenile. 4 years old until he reaches 6 - subadult. 6 years old until he reaches 9 - young adult. 9 years old until he reaches 20 - full-grown male bear. 20 years old and after - elderly (over the hill).

Tiger - conservewildcats.org/resources/amur-tiger-facts/ Breeding: Sexual maturity is reached around 4 years, but varies with gender and is earlier in zoo tigers. When a female is ready to mate she will signal by leaving scratch marks and urine deposits to attract males. Gestation last 3 to 3 1/2 months, litter size is 1-6, however, 2-4 is the most common. Longevity: In the wild, they can live between 10-15 years, but in captivity, they live nearer to 20 years old. ___________________________________________________________________________________ A male brown bear reaches sexual maturity at from 4 to 5 years old; most commonly at 4.5 years old. He is not a full-grown bear until age 9 or 10 (depends on what expert you ask). He will continue growing up until he is roughly 15 years old. ___________________________________________________________________________________ russia.wcs.org/en-us/Wildlife/Amur-Tigers/Amur-Tiger-Ecology.aspx The oldest Amur tigers in zoos have lived to 35 years of age, but 14 years is the oldest known age for an Amur tiger in the wild. __________________________________________________________________________________ shaggygod.proboards.com/thread/1123/world-oldest-bear-dies World’s oldest bear dies in WSPA designed sanctuary - Jun 18, 2013 We’re sad to announce that Andreas, a 50 year old European brown bear, passed away last month in a Greek sanctuary. He was one of the last dancing bears to be used for entertainment in Greece. Caught as a cub in the 1960s, Andreas would spend the next three decades in the cruel environment of the bear dancing trade. However, in January 1993 everything changed for Andreas. He was rescued as part of a larger project to end the trade in dancing bears in Greece. In 1993, at the age of thirty, he was a very old and blind bear. But after his rescue, Andreas received a fresh start in a new, WSPA-designed sanctuary in the forests of northern Greece. In fact, at that time, it was the world’s first bear sanctuary and managed by the Greek environmental group, Arcturos. Set in the mountains, the forest enclosure introduced Andreas to a number of other rescued dancing bears, who he would spend his life with. It is testimony to the care provided by Arcturos that Andreas would live a wonderful twenty years more. Andreas died peacefully in his den on May 24th 2013, aged at least 50 years old, making him the oldest bear to have lived at any sanctuary we know of. With 10 rescued bears still living in the Greek sanctuary, Arcturos have a lot of animals to care for and public to educate. In fact, the sanctuary works hard to educate children about the need to protect wildlife and to carry out many projects aimed at protecting bears, wolves and other native Greek wildlife. _____________________________________________________________________ How long does it take for a tiger to grow full size? wise-answer.com/how-long-does-it-take-for-a-tiger-to-grow-full-size/ Young male tigers will continue to grow and develop muscle until they are about five years old.
