Reply #41, awesome. The largest gorilla subspecies. Gorilla takes it 8/9 out of 10 times. Wow! King Kodiak, do you honestly believe that a cheetah can defeat a silverback Eastern lowland gorilla in from 1 to 2 fights out of 10? Holy cow, is that what i said? Damn. Does posting under the influence of vodka count?

King Kodiak I think the more appropriate question in regards to this comparison would be: How many tigers to take that behemoth down? Nice comparison, imo 2 tigers could beat that beast 6.5-7/10.

Ursus Ingressus was quite possibly the biggest Ursus bear of all time; bigger and stronger than a polar bear. A bite to the base of the neck is not going to take this bear down. Against two tigers, I would wager on the bear. Three tigers ( or lions ) and I keep my money in my pocket. Bottom line; when it takes more than one of any big cat species that ever lived to take down one bear, then we know which family stands at the top.

The largest theropod and elephant match up would be interesting.

The largest theropod and elephant match up would be interesting. The biggest elephant ever vs Tyrannosaurus rex would be a highly debatable face-off. I would wager on T-rex; but not with any great confidence.

The elephant seems to be the more stable one. However, the T. rex bone crushing jaws can do some damage and it hunts the more protected triceratops.

Against two tigers, I would wager on the bear. Three tigers ( or lions ) and I keep my money in my pocket. Three lions would demolish most bears except for exceptionally huge male bears but even than it will not be easy for the bear. A large male kodiak and male polar bear can at least displace three lions.

The cheetah is taller and longer than the bet bowl. Good comparison.

These two pictures above shows that a lot of extant animals have larger extinct counterparts.

Reply #780: I'm surprised by this one. I thought that the Neapolitan Mastiff was a huge dog.

brobearIt is a huge dog but the wolf is densely furred and very tall; it makes him look even bigger even though the Mastiff would probably have him by a few pounds.
