The yak is bigger than a bison. I watched a video over on wildfact.com/forum/ not so long ago of a battle between two bull yaks. Those guys are fighters! The Indian bison is much larger Brobear. Its the largest bovine in the world, max weight is up to 3300 lbs.The gaur is some bigger than a yak; but not a huge difference. By the way, I was referring to an actual bison. Also, it is my understanding that the gaur is more closely related to the yak than to a bison. I find the big bovines interesting. They represent what I would consider the limit of what a boar grizzly ( Ursus arctos ) can kill - perhaps 50% of confrontations. And this taken from old pioneer tales ( very unreliable ) but all we got. The big cats as better at killing ( from ambush of course ) the big bovines. Sometimes technique is better than brute force. www.ultimateungulate.com/index.html Quote: Bos Bos gaurus Gaur (wild form of the domestic gayal, Bos frontalis) Bos javanicus Banteng Bos mutus Wild yak (wild form of the domestic yak, Bos grunniens) Bos primigenius Aurochs (wild form of domestic cattle, Bos taurus) Bos sauveli Kouprey Subfamily Bovinae Bison Bison bison American bison Bison bonasus European bison, wisent

The Kunlun mountain type yak actually is the largest bovid in the world with bulls averaging ~2500lbs. I took a moderately sized specimen for this comparison as there also is a wild yak population much smaller averaging ~1200lbs in bulls. The yak in the above comparison is just slightly smaller than the gaur.

Do they surpass the Indian gaur at max weight?

Thats true. And in other forums, i see this comparison all the time. What these people dont understand is that the meat intake of brown bears in general, is only between 10-20%, they are mostly omnivores. So comparing the hunting abilities of a pure carnivore with an omnivore is just plain ridiculous.

@king Kodiak
There unfortunately is no information on the max. weight of Kunlun yaks. If you asked me about the largest individual in the world, it would probably go down between a gaur, a Kunlun yak, a wild water buffalo and a wood bison.

But the Kunlun mountain Yak, which is not listed here, averages around 2500 lbs like Taker said.

A black bear with this shoulder height could definitely fall into the category of Eastern black bears; could also be a Florida black bear/Newfoundland black bear.

Here's an idea for a future comparison: wild yak vs Tibetan brown bear ( blue bear ). This from page #1 - domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/268/tibetan-brown-bear Size: Males – 5 ft to 7 ft 3 in (1.5-2.2 m); Females – 4 ft 6 in to 6 ft (1.37m-1.83 m) Weight: Males – 298 lb (135 kg); Females – 150 lb (70 kg) Color: Reddish-brown to sandy Note: I could find no reliable source of Tibetan brown bear weight.

Quote: This is a sympatric comparison; a Plains bison taking on a Yellowstone grizzly bear. This comparison fully explains why the killing of adult bison is an extremely rare event in Wyoming and Montana. It would take an exceptional bear to stand any kind of a fighting chance. However, on the American prairie ( the Old West ) the grizzlies were bigger bears. This according to all that was said by the old pioneers. Also, the record inland-grizzly skull to date is a found-skull of a grizzly believed to be form that time period. Oops: ( edit and add ) I love the comparison picture.
