Reply 203. That Arctodus Simus picture looks a bit greenish. Maybe it confirms my fictional short faced bears should be green after all 😉.

Quote: How do you think the interaction will be like if it has crossed Siberia? Personally, it would be the dominant one in the Ussuri Kray. The giant short-faced bear would have found life to be little different. Cave lions rather than atrox. They would have went extinct there same as in America. One interest meeting however; giant short-faced bear meets giant cave bear. Reply #207 - Arctodus simus chasing a bison calf. A rare event if ever. Reply #208 - IF Smilodon fatalis was a social predator, they might have defended a carcass from the giant - maybe.

Smilodon females are not much lighter than their male counterparts. Therefore, males and females will be hard to determine.

Smilodon fatalis ( both sexes ) probably averaged about 500-pounds. Arctodus simus ( male ) averaged nearly a full-ton ( 2,000 pounds ). Whether or not the saber-toothed cat would stand his ground to defend a carcass is debatable. ( IMO ) for these big cats to challenge a bear roughly four-times the size of one pack member was too risky.

Simus averaged closer to 1500 lbs according to the latest estimations.

Simuls averaged closer to 1500 lbs according to the latest estimations. Triple the weight of the average S. fatalis - this works.

Simus averaged closer to 1500 lbs according to the latest estimations. That is the same weight of an exceptionally large polar bear.

iceage.museum.state.il.us/mammals/short-faced-bear-0 Short-faced bear, Arctodus simus. The giant short-faced bear, Arctodus simus, was an extremely large bear that occupied much of North America throughout the Pleistocene. It is often described as the largest Pleistocene land carnivore in North America, although several new studies suggest that this member of the Carnivora family may actually have been an omnivore (Figuerido et al. 2010; Meloro 2011; Sorkin 2006). As with most other large mammals in North America, the short-faced bear went extinct at the end of the Pleistocene. The giant short-faced bear has been subdivided into two subspecies, A. simus yukonensis and A. simus simus, based on extreme differences in body size (Kurten 1967). It has been postulated that the larger subspecies, A. simus yukonensis, was restricted to the northwest portion of the species' range - specifically, Beringia, western Canada and the northwestern U.S. However, as more larger-bodied individuals have been recovered from locations in the southern portion of the giant short-faced bear's range, it has been suggested that the observed variation in body size may be due in part to extreme sexual dimorphism in the species (Schubert 2010). In some locations, males may have weighed almost twice as much as females. Height: 1.5 m (5 ft) at shoulder; 3.35 m (11 ft) when standing on hind legs Weight: Average: 700-800 kg (1540-1760 lbs); Christiansen 1999 Females: 300-400 kg (660-880 lbs); Figuerido et al. 2010 Males: 800-1000 kg (1760-2200 lbs); Figuerido et al. 2010

I think this is one comparison everyone here will like. 😀 Kansas River male. 1211 kilograms is equal to 2,669.80 pounds. 2 meters is equal to 6.56 feet tall at the shoulders. This is not a bear that Neanderthals would have hunted had they ventured into North America. Average weight ( roughly ) 750kg or 1,653.47 pounds Quote: Note that this value excludes fat to avoid calculating fat/fur as muscle which would inflate weights, so it would be fair to say the largest Arctodus simus male weighed in excess off 1300kg. ( or 2,866.01 pounds )

Was simus fairly fleet of foot for such a large Bear? Or was was he a plodder (scavenger) feeding off other Predators kills mainly. How would Simus's speed compare to a Polar Bear or large Kodiak Bear today?

Was simus fairly fleet of foot for such a large Bear? Or was was he a plodder (scavenger) feeding off other Predators kills mainly. How would Simus's speed compare to a Polar Bear or large Kodiak Bear today? Many biologists agree that Arctodus simus was a trotter, who ran in a trot like a camel. Both right legs working together, then both left legs. Down in the lower 48 ( as I understand it ) these giant short-faced bears were omnivores while those living further north were practically full-time carnivores. All were scavengers and kleptoparasites. *Note: I just noticed this, quote: Average weight ( roughly ) 750kg or 1,653.47 pounds. The greatest weight recorded for a Kodiak bear in the wild is 1656 lb 751 kg for a male shot at English Bay.

Beautiful paintings of prehistoric wildlife can be found depicting very unlikely happenings.
