American Lion - Panthera leo atrox, average weight averaged at 255.65 kg (563lbs.). Pleistocene grizzly average ( estimated ) weight, 700 pounds. By looking through the data presented here : www.researchgate.net/publication/230843015_Postcranial_morphology_and_the_locomotor_habits_of_living_and_extinct_carnivoresThis is what we get : the Pleistocene Rancho La Brea grizzly had relatively stronger shoulders, larger epicondyles, trochleas, olecrana, shorter forelimbs, longer proximal forelimbs, bigger paws and deadlier claws while atrox simply had thicker Humeri and radii shafts. Overall, these results suggest that even at similar size, the Pleistocene Rancho La Brea grizzly was a stronger and better grappler than an American lion. Oh I forgot something, we need to also take the bear's plantigrade stance in consideration.

Largest American lion skull - 467.5 mm or 18.41 inches long. Record Kodiak bear skull - 17 4/16 inches long. It appears that Panthera atrox had a bigger skull than a Kodiak bear. Your thoughts.

The longest brown bear skull was a little bit over 500mm; so longer than all extinct Pantheras.

King Kodiak brobear I've taken a look at a illustration of different skull measurements (by Verdugo) and the mastoid breadth is a whole different measurement. It measures the breadth of the mastoid processes behind the zygomatic arches; guys, this Ursus Ingressus skull had a much higher score than just 32.5 inches when talking about the zygomatic arches. I've marked two lines in this brown bear skull; the first line on the left marks the mastoid breadth and the second line marks the zygomatic breadth (I know the lines are a bit over the edges but that should just show where the measurements have to be taken). I'll compare this skull to the largest American lion skull (where we both know length/mastoid width): Ursus IngressusGreatest Length: 571.4mm Mastoid Width: 255.6mm Total Score: 827mm or 32.56 inches Panthera AtroxGreatest Length: 465.7mm Mastoid Width: 170.8mm Total Score: 636.5mm or 25.06 inches The debate on skulls has been settled guys, this enormous individual can't and will probably never be contested by any cat. Probably belonged to a specimen weighing ~1 ton. Good place for a complete list of bear skulls: WORLD'S RECORDS BLACK BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 14 12/16 Greatest width of skull: 8 14/16 SCORE: 23 10/16 WORLD'S RECORDS GRIZZLY BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 17 4/16 Greatest width of skull: 10 9/16 SCORE: 27 13/16 WORLD'S RECORDS ALASKA BROWN BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 17 15/16 Greatest width of skull: 12 13/16 SCORE: 30 12/16 WORLD'S RECORDS POLAR BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 18 8/16 Greatest width of skull: 11 7/16 SCORE: 29 15/16 The bears have this.

American lion vs grizzly:
American Lion - Panthera leo atrox, average weight averaged at 255.65 kg (563lbs.). Average fully grown male Yellowstone grizzly (9 years+) - 470 pounds. So, the average American lion has a weight advantage of nearly 100 pounds over the Rocky Mountain grizzly. However, from my reading of the historical grizzlies of the Great Plains (prairie) which fed heavily on bison, those bears were much larger than their mountain brothers. W.P. Hubbard was probably 'right-on-the-money' when he stated that the grizzly of the prairie averaged roughly 850 pounds. In every book I have read concerning the historic grizzly ( those that touched on the subject ) stated that the grizzlies of the open prairie were bigger that those of the Rocky Mountains and rivaled only by those of the West Coast. It stands to reason, that a population of grizzlies with a very high percentage of red meat consumption would be very large bears. But, the grizzlies of Pleistocene N. America, had life much more difficult than their bison-fed descendents. They have been estimated at an average of 700-pounds for a full-grown male grizzly.

Nice find OldGreenGrolar. One point the creator of this video was not knowledgeable on... the bear is much smarter.
