horribilis A friend of mine once did a GDI of the 1002kg polar bear and at those dimensions the chest girth would be ~208.2cm. Nowadays an average male polar bear is like 450kg, so it would be expected to have a chest girth of ~159.5cm. Large male polar bears (excluding Foxe Basin) have been recorded at 900kg in Northern Siberia (historical records); the chest girth would be ~200.9cm. I can't give you any chest girth measurements on large males as I don't think there are any tables or something like that; I've only seen a statement mentioning large males to measure up to 200cm around the chest and large females up to 175cm (Beaufort Sea) which was published by Steven C. Amstrup. In case you don't know who this person is: "Dr. Amstrup has been conducting research on all aspects of polar bear ecology in the Beaufort Sea for 24 years. His interests include distribution and movement patterns as well as population dynamics of wildlife, and how information on those topics can be used to assure wise stewardship. He is particularly interested in how science can help to reconcile the ever-enlarging human footprint on our environment with the needs of other species for that same environment." Credits to: OrcaDaBest, who appears to be a highly intelligent poster. Alright; here is a small collection of polar bear weights using data i've gathered over time:
The Weight of the Polar bear (Ursus Maritimus)
4) Polar Bear Study (?): (Unknown Location) Polar bear - 423.2kg for 1 male; 240.3kg for 2 females.
5) Polar Bear News (2010): Russian Polar Bear - 433.1kg for 16 males; 205.4kg for 9 females.
6) Dybwad (1969): (Unknown location) Polar bear - 371kg for 1 male
7) National Wildlife (1970): (Unknown location) Polar Bear - 412.7kg for 1 male
8) Atkinson et al. (1995): Canadian Polar bear - 217.2kg for 39 females
9) Kolenosky et al. (1992): Canadian Polar Bear - 489 kg for 94 males
10) Stenhouse & Nick Lunn (1985): Canadian Polar Bear - 810 kg for 1 male
11) USFWS (2009): Alaskan Polar Bear - 630.49kg for 1 male
12) Daily Mail (2008): Alaskan Polar Bear - 698.53kg for 1 male
Total Average: 446.92kg for males (n=332) and 253.91kg for females (n=120).
If anyone has any additional data to add to the collection; please share it.

Total Average: 446.92kg (985.29 pounds) for males (n=332) and 253.91kg (559.78 pounds) for females (n=120). The only problem I have with this collection of data is a very common problem when seeking the average weight of bears. No where to be seen are the ages of the bears weighed. Are all of the male bears weighed at least 9 years old? __________________________________________________________________ Our averages taken from other studies. (still not done using only full-grown adults) Average mature male polar bear (6 years+) - 1075 pounds. Average mature female polar bear (5 years+) - 485 pounds. Average mature male Foxe Basin polar bear (5 years+) - 1300 pounds.

/\ That is the question I was going to ask. If we have the weights of these male polar bears, it would be more accurate.

550 - 610KG is only for modern Foxe Basin Polar Bears. Historically or pre-climate change I have NO doubt that there have been even larger populations, and I'd estimate these populations averaging 650 - 710KG. Hell I made my own chart, and I got it to 702KG with 40 samples.

That is at least 410 pound difference we know that polar bears can grow up to 11 years old. Yet any male polar bear above 1600 pounds is considered exceptional according to Guiness World Records. Therefore 6 years plus means 6 years old and above. Minus that, the average male polar bear would be a bit heavier than 1075 pounds and 1300 pounds.

One more thing, male polar bears become full grown at 11 years old.

One more thing, male polar bears become full grown at 11 years old. What age is considered as "full-grown" and at what age does a bear stop growing are two different things. Some consider a male brown bear as full grown at 9 years old while others, Doug Peacock for example, consider the age of 10 marking the male brown bear as being full-grown. However, a male brown bear will continue growing well after the age of 10. If my memory serves me right, The age in which a male brown bear stops growing is different from one bear to another; but roughly between the ages of 12 and 15 years. As for the polar bear - you might be correct. ______________________________________ Average fully-grown male Ussuri brown bear ( 9 years+ ) - 631.4 pounds. Average fully-grown male Ussuri brown bear ( 10 years+) - 657 pounds. Average fully-grown female Ussuri brown bear (7 years+) - 415 pounds.

Here is the chart. Credited to Undertaker. Given the polar bear takes longer to become sexually mature than the brown bear (males), 6 years old vs 4.5 years old, I am not surprise if the polar bear keeps growing despite being fully grown at 11 years old.
