THE RESTRAINT DEMOSTRATED BY THE MOTHER GRIZZLY, WHO BY ALL MEANS SHOULD HAVE CHARGED ME, WAS REMARKABLE. NOW THAT I KNEW REAL GRIZZLIES LURKED IN THE SHADOWS, MY DREAMS WERE NOT SO IMPORTANT. SOMETHING BIG WAS OUT THERE.

GRIZZLIES BECAME MORE AGGRESSIVE IN RESPONSE TO THE TREELESS TUNDRA, WHERE MOTHERS HAD TO LEARN TO PROTECT THEIR YOUNG FROM OTHER BEARS, WOLVES, AND SEVERAL NOW EXTINCT PLEISTOCENE CARNIVORES. DEFENSE BECAME A GOOD OFFENCE, THIS INCREASED AGGRESSIVENESS NO DOUBT ACCOUNTED FOR THE BEAR’S SUBSPECIES NAME, HORRIBILIS.

The grizzlies aggression resulted in their interaction with many large predators of the past yet the mother grizzly is very successful in bringing up her cubs to adulthood before driving them off.

THE GIANT BEAR FLICKED HIS EARS AND LOOKED TO THE SIDE. I FELT SOMETHING PASS BETWEEN US. I FELT MY LIFE HAD BEEN TOUCHED BY ENORMOUS POWER AND MYSTERY. I DID NOT KNOW THAT THE FORCE OF THAT ENCOUNTER WOULD SHAPE MY LIFE FOR DECADES TO COME.

This author was pretty fortunate to come in contact with a grizzly face to face and live. Perhaps he knows how to communicate with animals. Well done.

Yeah, Doug Peacock was charged many times by bears, especially mother bears. But this guy is one the best experts on Grizzly bears, he knew exactly what to do.

THE IDEA OF ANYBODY KILLING OFF THE GRIZZLIES OF YELLOWSTONE DROVE ME CRAZY. THESE BEARS HAD SAVED MY LIFE. THE GRIZZLY WAS THE LIVING EMBODIMENT OF WILD NATURE, THE ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE THAT WAS ONCE OUR HOME.

SOWS WITH YOUNG ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. AT CLOSE DISTANCES, HER PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS TAKE OVER AND SHE NAILS YOU.

Never get between a mother grizzly and her cubs. Once again it surprises me how many think bears are cute but forget they are powerful and dangerous.

Agree and people like to blame the animal when the bear decides to be a bear and attack the person because the person is too dumb to respect the animal as a bear by getting too close and not respecting the bear personal space.

Thats right. Whoever invades the bear’s space deserves to get injured or die. Same way if an intruder invades your home.

Most knowledgeable people consider them the most dangerous bears because of their unpredictability. Young grizzlies have injured many people and have been implicated im half of all the fatal maulings in Glacier. Even a small subadult grizzly is powerful enough to tear a human to pieces.
