Reply 77. That is the same way polar bears hunt beluga whales. So polar bears best chance at killing bull walruses will probably be at breathing holes.

The polar bear does not look like a full grown male which would at least attempt predation on the walrus.

Quote; "The polar bear does not look like a full grown male which would at least attempt predation on the walrus." I agree. This bear appears to be either a she-bear or a very young adult male, possibly 6 or 7 years old.

The Polar Bear Brutally Kills The Giant Walrus To Provide More Energy For Its Upcoming Hibernation. The polar bear is a large animal. They are the largest of all the bears in existence. With living in a harsh environment, the animals living in this area will generally have a thick layer of fat or equally thick fur to protect the body in the best way. Polar bears are equipped with both. With the thickness of three layers of fur along with a thick layer of fat, the polar bear’s body is very well adapted to the cold environment. But that’s not enough for the bears to survive, so of course they also have a hibernation like other bears. Bears, even if they live in a place that is covered with snow year-round, will have seasonal differences in the temperature at which the sun shines. So before hibernation, like other bears, polar bears have to eat more food and from there store enough fat until next spring. The walrus became the target of this polar bear’s attack. To be able to provide enough energy for polar bears, adult walruses are the ideal choice. And of course, ideally, it takes a lot of time to catch and kill the opponent. But in the end the polar bear successfully recharged the body. Forgot to mention this. Keep in mind that only pregnant female polar bears hibernate.

/\ This is an old video. This bull walrus has probably isolated himself from the rest of the herd due to sickness or he is an old carnivorous bull.

*We have shown that, a full-grown boar polar bear can indeed kill a full-grown bull walrus. We have the video proof. I have never watched as a walrus kills a polar bear. Therefore: we can safely say that, on land or on ice, it's polar bear victorious over the walrus. _________________________________________________ How would a 1400 pound Kodiak bear fare against a 4,000 pound bull walrus?

The real picture sways my thoughts. In a face-off, on land (solid ice or dry earth) If a Kodiak bear attempts to kill a full-grown bull walrus, I doubt that he will succeed. However, if the bear is careful, he should easily be able to avoid those deadly ivory tusks. The walrus is flopping around on flippers designed for swimming. The bear is standing tall on four firmly planted feet. Regardless of their bulky appearance, even big polar bears and Kodiak bears are surprisingly quick and nimble. So, the end result of this face-off should be a draw with little if any blood loss on either side.

125 cm tall at the shoulder vs 320 cm long. Imo; Not every adult male polar bear will challenge a bull walrus. I doubt that adult walrus, especially a bull, is a common prey choice. Your thoughts....

Polar bears usually avoid bull walruses as not only are they dangerous but take a long time to kill. Before they finally kill the bull, the yellowish white bear will be killed by a score of tusks from uncles and cousins. Male polar bears can kill bull walruses but it takes a long time. That is why they attack bulls mainly when they are sick (sick walruses isolate themselves from their herd), walruses in the ice pack at their breathing hole (they are accounts on that), and old carnivorous bulls that have turned to killing seals and young beluga and Narwhal.

Why would a polar bear choose to fight with a bull walrus; Knowing that the walrus is bigger, stronger, more durable, and knows how to fight? There are so many adolescent walrus, walrus cows, and other seal species out there that would be a much safer choice. Same rule applies to tiger and brown bear. (picture by Hafstanni)

The URL you posted does not work; but if you have one verified confirmed account of a polar bear fighting and killing a full-grown bull walrus, then that is one more than we have of a tiger killing a full-grown male brown bear.

A bit of exaggeration but it shows male polar bear can kill bull walrus.
