Common misconceptions claim that tigers dominate, regularly eat and instill fear in these three smaller bear species: sun bear, sloth bears and Asiatic black bear; but if scientifically viewed, so these claims are simply an agglomeration of distortion, fantasy and unfactual which this thread would proof why. Small bear species, the Asiatic black bear, Sloth bear and Sun bear interact with tigers larger than themselves. Tigers, due to larger size, are able to and have killed these bears cubs to male adults in ambush and fights; and its understandable, since here the felines larger size speaks for it. Tigers mostly grown males, however very rarely, also prey on these little bears. But thats not that straight. These small bears, though small, aren't easy opponents for them and tigers always avoid adult bears in face-on encounters. They don't dominate these 3 species and even show respect too them since in fights tigers also loose a lot too! Overall, tigers generally, despite of their larger body size, don't dominate these bear species and these bears are also tough opponents for them as shown below.

"Tiger, in general, don't hunt small bear species".Tigers in general don't prey on these 3 small species of bears, however when opportunity is available, they would kill and eat a bear of any age or gender by ambush hunting. However, that isn't quite often and rarely does it happens in wild.

Not only sloth bears are rarely preyed but so are sun bears as well. "It may be argued that sun bear is not a typical prey for tigers and the evidence in this study merely suggests opportunistic predation."

So tigers in south asia and south east asia rarely prey on bears. In Amur region, the black bear is also rarely preyed despite of the commonly belief that tigers regularly prey on them. Most of those bears are females and juveniles hunted almost always by adult male tigers. Adult male black bears are very rarely hunted with very few such cases. Anyways, down here is scientific proof that tigers don't regularly prey on black bears, contrary to common thought. "Гималайский медведь - более мелкая добыча, чем бурый медведь или изюбрь. Не всеубитые тиграми гималайские медведи, особенно молодые, могли быть обнаружены из-за кратковременного пребывания на них меченых тигров. В.С. Храмцов (1993) сообщает, что тигры чаще добывают именно молодых гималайских медведей."
"The Himalaya bear - fineer extraction, than a brown bear or изюбрь. Not all the Himalaya bears killed by tigers, especially young, could be found out because of short-term stay on them меченых tigers. V.S.Khramtsov (1993) informs, that tigers predation on young Himalaya black bears is more often.'
Here is biologist Baikov on bears and tiger:
"Кроме человека, у черного маньчжурского медведя есть только один враг - тигр, который за неимением другой добычи охотится за ним, прячет в зарослях и скалах и бросается сверху, стараясь сесть на спину и укусить его. шея. Медведица или молодой медведь часто становятся добычей «короля маньчжурской тайги», но старый самец так просто не сдается и дорого продает свою жизнь."
“In addition to humans, the black Manchurian bear has only one enemy - the tiger, which, in the absence of other prey, hunts for it, hides it in thickets and rocks and rushes from above, trying to sit on its back and bite its neck. A she-bear or a young bear often becomes the prey of the "king of the Manchurian taiga"....."
www.ohotniki.ru/amp/editions/huntingfishing/article/2008/04/28/42940-medvedi-dalnego-vostoka.html
"Лишь отдельные тигры-самцы могут в определённой мере специализироваться в охоте на медведей (Ткаченко, 2008). Для большинства же тигров медведь – добыча не частая, и далеко не каждая встреча может закончиться нападением..."
"Only a few male tigers can, to a certain extent, specialize in bear hunting (Tkachenko, 2008). For most tigers, the bear is not a frequent prey, and not every encounter can end with an attack ... " Explains the rarity of bear hunting exactly and conspicuously. www.researchgate.net/publication/302590565_MARK_TREES_AND_INDIRECT_COMMUNICATION_BETWEEN_BEARS_URSUS_ARCTOS_URSUS_THIBETANUS_AND_TIGER_PANTHERA_TIGRIS_ON_THE_SIKHOTE-ALIN"Most oftenly, the victims of the stripped are one year old individuals. Usually, the tigers defeat a himalayan bear until the age of three". Mostly subadults. www-hab-kp-ru.translate.goog/daily/27477/4684605/?fromrss=582&_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=es-419&_x_tr_pto=wap
"Apart from humans, bears have almost no enemies. Only young specimens are attacked by a tiger; in addition, they are greatly annoyed by some species of insects and endocavitary worms."
museum.amursu.ru/index.php/periodika-russkogo-kharbina/209-bajkov-n-a-medvedi-dalnego-vostoka"Tigers are known to catch and kill bears. Usually, these bears are young female Himalayan bears". (David meanwell 2022)
So as we can see, Sloth bears, Asiatic black bears and Sun bears don't share prey-predator relations with tigers. Adult males of these species are very rarely prey and mostly the females and juvenile bears become a target. They are an atypical prey for tigers.

"Small bears are respected and frontally avoided by tigers."When a small opponent avoids a larger, so that isn't surprising but when a larger opponent avoids the smaller, so thats indeed interesting; and similarly tigers avoid sloth bears, black bears and even sun bears, frontally especially. As these guys can wounded a tiger badly, and a wounded hunter is half-dead. Here's the proof.
Starting from the most astonishing fact: tigers avoid Sun bears.

"Despite of being smaller, bears aren't subordinate to tigers."Despite of being smaller to tigers, black bears, sloth bears and sun bears, unlike leopards, aren't subordinate to tigers. Such evidence can be seen through the daily activity and pattern along with elevations of bears sympathetic with tigers. First, lets see that do tigers effect these bear's daily activity? Before we proceed, lets see some examples that how dominant predators effect subordinate predators daily activity and elevation occupation.
In North America, American black bears avoid Grizzly Bears by occupying different ranges and changing daily patterns. American black bears are reported to avoid brown bears by being active at a different period (Aune 1994). Many prey species are known to avoid predation risk by temporal and spatial segregation from the predators (Clarke 1983, Caldwell 1986, Ferguson et al. 1988, Lima 1988, Lima and Dill 1990)."etheses.saurashtrauniversity.edu/593/1/yoganand_k_wildlife%20science.pdfIn Amur taiga, Asiatic black bear avoided brown bears by changing activity and elevations. "Asiatic black bears avoided brown bears by occupying higher elevations and being more diurnal where they coexisted"."Compared to brown bears, Asiatic black bears behaved more diurnally."www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/12/10/1262#B78-animals-12-01262In north america, cougars are subordinate to wolves and move to higher elevations to avoid lower elevation occupied wolves .
"Cougars may move to higher elevations in the presence of wolves."
predatorpreyproject.weebly.com/wolf-cougar-interactions.html
"Wolves are known to push cougars out of prime habitats". wildlife.org/wolf-expansion-in-wyoming-curtails-puma-population/In India, leopards avoided tigers by occupying different elevations and changing activity. "Before the introduction of tigers or in areas where tigers are not present, leopards are nocturnal and morning and evening, while after the reintroduction of tigers or in areas where tigers are already present, leopards become diurnal to reduce overlap with tiger activity (Mondal et al, 2012; Steinmetz et al, 2013)."www.biodiversity-science.net/EN/10.17520/biods.2020359"In the carnivore community, dominant carnivores are mainly nocturnal and twilight, while secondary competitors perform diurnal activities to avoid disturbing suppression from the dominant species. For example, leopards (Panthera pardus) are more active diurnally than tigers (Panthera tigris) in the Changbai Mountains, China."www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/12/10/1262#B78-animals-12-01262Leopards and dholes changed their activity and prey preferences to co-exist with Bengal tigers. books.google.com.pk/books?id=zB1243xWpwgC&printsec=copyright&source=gbs_pub_info_r#v=onepage&q&f=false In south east asian countries, Clouded leopards, Leopards and tigers occupied different types of elevations in a same area to avoid each other. Leopards were pushed to comparatively barren areas by tigers. www.biodiversity-science.net/EN/10.17520/biods.202035Here is evidence that tigers don't influence Sloth bears activity. By famous Indian Biologist, Yoganand: "Tiger activity does not seem to influence bear activity timings. The hourly activities of both species (in dry and cold seasons) were strongly positively correlated, even after controlling for the effect of temperature. They both were mainly crepuscular and nocturnal in activity and were probably influenced by the same thermal factors or an endogenous rhythm. Tigers showed a more bimodal pattern of activity than sloth bears, which was because of more daytime activity and much less post-midnight activity. This kind of increased day activity could be caused by the more thermal-buffered microhabitats (shaded, riverine habitats, etc.) the tigers used, and by the different foraging behaviours and underlying physiologies of both species. I did not find any evidence to support the hypothesis that bears avoid encountering tigers (reduce predation risk) by choosing a different timing to be active. Joshi et al. (1999) believed that to have happened in Chitwan NP, Nepal, but did not present evidence to support it."
Lets compare this tiger-leopard to tiger-sun bear activity pattern in malaysia. As generally, like all tigers, Malayan tigers are nocturnal.
"Tigers are mostly nocturnal".
"Tigers are nocturnal cats that spend most of the day sleeping and moving around their territory before searching for prey at night." www.savethemalayantiger.com/get-to-know-our-malayan-tiger-habitat/While tigers are nocturnal, and so are malayan sun bears who show most activity not only daytime but also at night for finding food.
From National Geography: "Ironically, sun bears are nocturnal. They lumber through the forests by night, snacking on fruits, berries, roots, insects, small birds, lizards, and rodents."www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/facts/sun-bear#:~:text=Ironically%2C%20sun%20bears%20are%20nocturnal"Sun bears are nocturnal, using their keen sense of smell to forage for termites, beetles, earthworms, and bees and ripping open trees and insect nests with their sharp claws."www.nathab.com/know-before-you-go/asia-the-pacific/borneo/wildlife-guide/sun-bear/"Sun bears are primarily nocturnal, but daytime activity has been observed in this species."malaysianwildlife.org/malayan-sun-bear-helarctos-malayanus/Sun bears basically show both diurnal and nocturnal activity in finding food. Its nocturnal behaviour in tiger's territory means that, unlike leopard which becomes more diurnal in tiger presence, the sun bear does fears tigers and move normally at the time when tigers are most active. If sun bears were subordinate to tigers, so they would be more diurnal than before, but its not the case. Tigers in taiga of Amur and areas of north chiba don't seem to have influence on asiatic black bears. Ussuri brown bears are seen to influence their activity a lot by forcing black bears to occupy higher elevations and to become more diurnal. www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/12/10/1262#B78-animals-12-01262However, there exists no evidence that tigers influence on black bear's elevation occupations and daily activity pattern. Black bears don't avoid tiger occupied areas either. www.researchgate.net/publication/348945660_USING_OF_PHOTO-TRAPS_FOR_INVESTIGATIONS_OF_BIOLOGY_OF_BROWN_BEAR_URSUS_ARCTOS_LINNAEUS_1758_AND_BLACK_BEAR_URSUS_THIBETANUS_G_CUVIER_1823_IN_THE_SOUTHWESTERN_PRIMORSKY_PROVINCE_RUSSIASo tigers, as we see, don't have dominance over sloth, black and sun bears as evident through their activities. If these bears were subordinate to the dominant tigers (as a rule in carnivorous ecology), so bears would have avoided tiger areas, change elevations to avoid tigers and become more diurnal to avoid the nocturnal feline whereas it never happens. Heres a great, rarely known, proof that tigers don't dominate these three bear species. Yet, another great proof, apart from activity and elevation, is to see the effect on populations. Dominant top predators, as a natural threat to subordinate top predators, force the latter's to avoid areas of rich resources and negatively effect their populations. For example, Wolves, in North america, negatively effect cougar's populations. www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/how-wolves-western-united-states-are-driving-down-mountain-lion-populations-180976775/mybighornbasin.com/wyoming-mountain-lion-populations-plummet-due-to-wolves/ Similarly, leopard populations decrease and are negatively effected with tiger's increasing numbers. www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-51213-wwww.researchgate.net/publication/268883502_Impacts_of_people_and_tigers_on_leopard_spatiotemporal_activity_patterns_in_a_global_biodiversity_hotspotHowever, tigers never ever effected the numbers of bear populations. Instead, tigers growing numbers are also followed by bears growing numbers, especially in India, Amur and China. Starting from Sloth bears which are rapidly increasing in reserves dedicated to tigers along with the growth of the feline's populations too. "The population of sloth bears grows when they live in high-profile reserves that protect species, such as tigers and elephants. Directly managed reserves could conserve the sloth bear, hence such reserves must be supported." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloth_bear" Tamil Nadu's tiger population is on the rise".www.google.com/amp/s/m.timesofindia.com/city/chennai/spotted-stripes/amp_articleshow/99630884.cmsAnd so are sloth bears increasing too much: " According to a recent PTI report, the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu has seen a sizeable increase in its bear population in the last few months."www.google.com/amp/s/www.indiatoday.in/amp/travel/wildlife/story/sathyamangalam-tiger-reserve-home-to-a-new-breed-of-bears-303437-2016-01-12And so in many other places, the growth of tiger does negatively effect sloth bears, instead the bears show a sizeable increase to along with them. So, its another proof that tigers don't dominate or instill fear in sloth bears. Asiatic black bears are also shows an increase in population along with Amur tigers. Its noteworthy that despite of tiger predator, these bears aren't effect in terms of population and behaviour. " The predation of the tiger during its sedentary life on Khekhtsir (1992–2007) did not lead to a decrease in the number of (black) bears".elementy.ru/nauchno-populyarnaya_biblioteka/434314/Gimalayskie_medvedi_Bolshogo_Khekhtsira "Indeed, the strong competition and antagonism (as it is expressed by Kucherenko) between the 3 predators would exclude the possibility of their simultaneous presence on the same territory. The presence of larger predators will hardly restrict the population of the smaller Asian black bear with very different way of life. This means that the decline of the Asian black bear population is caused by a reason other than simple competition with the larger predators."
books.google.com.ar/books?id=Kwy2AAAAIAAJ&q=Kostoglod%20bear/tiger&dq=Kostoglod%20bear/tiger&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiV-sjP16j6AhXHqpUCHczwAVYQ6AF6BAgCEAMTiger numbers are increasing in Sikhote-Alin reserve and so of the black bears as " The Sikhote-Alin mountain system is the most promising area for conservation of the jointly inhabited wild populations of Himalayan and brown bears on the Asian continent". Pikunov D.G., Seryodkin I.VIn 9 September, 2022 siberian tigers have increased significantly reaching 750 individuals. programmes.putin.kremlin.ru/en/tiger/news/26164 And on the other side, from 2017-2018, about 15% of black bears and brown bears have increased too! " Populations of both species (Brown bears and black bears) have been increased in 2018 by 10%-15%".www.researchgate.net/publication/348945660_USING_OF_PHOTO-TRAPS_FOR_INVESTIGATIONS_OF_BIOLOGY_OF_BROWN_BEAR_URSUS_ARCTOS_LINNAEUS_1758_AND_BLACK_BEAR_URSUS_THIBETANUS_G_CUVIER_1823_IN_THE_SOUTHWESTERN_PRIMORSKY_PROVINCE_RUSSIASo neither is the black bear's population effected by increase in tiger's population. About sun bears, we have no current data that there population decline with tiger's increasing. So as we can see, tigers don't dominate these bears as they have no impact on their populations. They prosper with tigers, and if they feared tigers, so the increasing of tigers would be a dangerous news for them and surely their population would be effected but its not.

Some people say that tigers are the main reason for what black bears and sun bears are arboreal animals, meaning to avoid tiger predation these bear live mostly in trees to avoid them. However, its very unlikely and here is an authentic proof for that:

by Daniel S. Mills, Jeremy N. Marchant-Forde, Paul D. McGreevy, David B. Morton, Christine J Nicol, Clive J. C. Phillips, Peter Sandøe, Ronald R. Swaisgood
Authenticity: The practical focus of this authoritative, comprehensive encyclopedia aims to promote the understanding and improvement of animals’ behaviour without compromising welfare. Under the editorial direction of Professor Daniel Mills, the UK’s first specialist in veterinary behavioural medicine, over 100 international experts have contributed a wealth of fully cross-referenced entries from concise definitions to detailed short essays on biological, practical, clinical and ethical aspects of behaviour and welfare in domestic, exotic, companion and zoo animals. Andean bears of South America and Sun bears of South-east asia appear to be more arboreal, but this behaviour is more related to their food than threats of predation".

And yes, thats surely true. As fruits make a lot part of sun bear's diet as obviously fruits are above trees. Fruits and ants their primary food is found on trees, while honey as their favourite food is also on canopies which make them to spend most of their time in trees. redirect.viglink.com/?key=71fe2139a887ad501313cd8cce3053c5&subId=7226874&u=https%3A//animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/sun-bearIn Bornean forests, fruits of the families Moraceae, Burseraceae and Myrtaceae make up more than 50% of the fruit diet. www.bearbiology.org/sun-bear/Black bears also tree up mostly due to their food habits and availability of foods on tree tops. Its mostly young bears of most species who climb up trees to avoid predators. Adult American Black bears dominate cougars but cubs and juveniles black bears would tree up to avoid them as they lack the physical ability to defend themselves from adult cougars. And we do have proof that adult black bears, mostly males show little to no fear against tigers. DESPITE ACTIVE Pursuit ON THE PART OF TIGERS, HIMALAYAN BEARS AT KHEKHTSIR WERE USUALLY NOT AFRAID OF FRESH TRACKS, WENT ALONG THEIR PATHS. ONLY 1 BEAR OF THIS SPECIES RAN AWAY AFTER GETTING THE FRESH SCENT OF A TIGRESS.""The predation of the tiger during its sedentary life on Khekhtsir (1992–2007) did not lead to a decrease in the number of bears. The reaction of Himalayan bears to tiger tracks varies. Usually, adult bears show no visible signs of anxiety. With the help of a camera trap installed on the permanent tiger trail near the Tiger Grotto, we managed to find out that bears also often use this trail. But one day, in December 1995, the bear was frightened by the fresh tracks of a tigress and two cubs [14]. Probably, such cases are not isolated, since there is information that the Himalayan bear is in a panic fear of tiger tracks [8]. AG Yudakov and IG Nikolaev, who conducted research in the western part of the Middle Sikhote-Alin, indicate that bears react differently to tiger tracks [15]. Fresh tiger tracks cause great fear in the cubs - and they immediately climb the trees. This fear is innate in them [16]."elementy.ru/nauchno-populyarnaya_biblioteka/434314/Gimalayskie_medvedi_Bolshogo_KhekhtsiraNote the words, "adult bears show no visible sign of anxiety....bears also often use this (tiger's) trail."
"Bears react differently to tiger tracks"
"Fresh tiger tracks cause great fear in the cubs".It is clearly understandable from the above statements that "bear reaction to tiger track varies as adult bears show no fear while cubs do" which shows the reality of common rumors made by fanboys. Sloth bears, also don't fear tigers. It has been speculated that the shaggy body of the sloth bear is a natural gifted instinct of the bear to make it look bigger and intimidate the tiger in face offs. "Additionally, it seems possible that the fur on the head makes the bear appear larger and thus more intimidating."www.researchgate.net/publication/315848286_Sloth_Bear_Attack_Behavior_and_a_Behavioral_Approach_to_SafetyAll these 3 bear species carry a V or U shaped yellowish matk on their chest which is thought to be a warning sign to tigers who encounters adult bears in face offs. Standing on hind legs and viewing this sign to tigers makes the cat reluctant. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloth_bearAnd that sign serves well for adult bears as they would fiercely fight and chase off tigers as sun bears: " Sun Bears are fierce. "Tigers being chased and subdued by little bears".
After see the undeniable proof that tigers don't dominate Sun bears, Sloth bears and Black bears; lets see some cases of these species chase away and subduing tigers. Starting with the Black bears:
"In one case, a bear of an unknown species took the boar also from a tigress. And still in one case, it seems that the tigress Neli (F37) with the cubs took the prey of the Himalayan bear. According to the last case, it is known that at the end of April, on the day of the tigress’s murder, the red deer the roar of the bear was heard repeatedly. The next day, the tigress was far from her victims (established by radio tracking) when, when approaching the deer, they frightened him off Himalayan bear. The victim still had 65% of the meat. In the near future tigers to prey they didn’t return, but the Himalayan bear returned, and they caught him. He turned out to be 8-10 year old male in physiologically good condition, blind to the right eye."

"In Burma (now Myanmar), Pair of tigers kill deer, hunter kills a tigress. Looks like the other tiger (most likely another tigress) dragged the carcass away. Huge Asiatic black bear also feeds on the carcass, hunter kills the bear. the tiger was scared of the bear.

Now lets numerous cases of sloth bear chasing and intimidating tigers in frontal encounters.
"Sloth bears have been observed fighting with tigers and holding their own. One ranger told Smithsonian magazine he observed a sloth bear slap a tiger in the face and push it away. The tiger fled after that. The same ranger said he once saw a sloth bear take on three large tigers, each of which fled in a different direction after the encounter. However, tigers do kill sloth bears more often than visa versa. In most cases a tiger can kill a sloth bear of it wants to but is fearful if suffering severe wounds in the process."
factsanddetails.com/asian/cat68/sub433/entry-3574.html
"Valmik Thapar has observed a sloth bear hold its own against a male tiger named Genghis. He has also seen sloth bears walk past tigers without showing signs of fear or concern. He mentioned six cases where a sloth bear fought off a tigress."
"There are about a hundred to 150 sloth bears in and around the park (Ranthambore National Park). The tigers and sloth bears keep their distance from each other. Unlike leopards, which are submissive with tigers, and sometimes even fall victim to them, the bear remains unperturbed and I have witnessed bears walking past tigers without any great concern."
"The tiger remains alert, watching them move away, but does not adopt an aggressive posture. Only once did I see Genghis, who was a particularly aggressive tiger, charge an unsuspecting sloth bear; both bear and tiger slapped each other with their forelegs and finally the bear retreated. But both seemed to respect each other's presence."
