The brown bear on the Lake Placid movie was CGI ( computer-generated imagery ). The thing I don't get is why 30 feet? A 20-foot-long crocodile would have been just as deadly yet believable. How else would you make a crocodile so deadly to humans who have vehicles, guns etc?

Ever hear of the Nile crocodile named "Gustave"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustave_(crocodile) I remember watching the documentary during an attempted capture. There is also a movie based on Gustave: www.imdb.com/title/tt0772193/ Quote: Current status: Gustave was reportedly sighted in June 2015. A resident claimed that Gustave dragged an adult bull buffalo on a riverbank. As of 2019 Gustave was reported to have been killed.

unresolved.me/gustave At one point, Gustave was reported to take down an adult hippopotamus, a near-impossibility for a crocodile of any size. After all, hippos are natural enemies of crocodiles, and can grow upwards of 3000 pounds. It was believed that Gustave, this alleged killer crocodile, could be "easily more than 18 feet" long, and weigh more than a ton. Every time the legend of Gustave begins to fade away, he seems to resurface, as if to remind the world that monsters do exist. The story of Gustave, the killer crocodile of central Africa, remains unresolved.

Nile Crocs aren't even afraid to taste an Elephant from time to time.

I sorely wish I could locate a documentary of wild Africa where the monstrous crocodile displaces an entire pride of lions from their kill. It seems I saw that in ( from 2012 to 2014 ). I remember thinking; this might be Gustave. The croc was so gigantic that the lions ( including several males ) never touched him.

Point understood. Same as with Jaws. A 20-foot shark would not have made as big a splash as their 25-foot shark. If you haven't seen "Primeval" - its a must see.

Nile Crocs aren't even afraid to taste an Elephant from time to time. The croc failed to take down the elephant of course. Nevertheless, what the croc did was impressive and courageous.

I think it's one of those things where he "bit down on more than he could chew" I'll bet that's a 15ft. Croc too, just doesn't look as big when next to an Elephant.

As a kid I enjoyed King Kong and Mighty Joe Young. But the ( life-size ) "man-in-gorilla-suits" were scarier.

A croc that is too big would be a sitting duck for lions.

A croc that is too big would be a sitting duck for lions. See reply #125. A huge crocodile ( like Gustave ) is not bothered by lions. They're practically dinosaurs.

/\I doubt lions would mess with Gustave as at least one might risk being killed. I believe there would be more crocs which would reach Gustave size of it were not for poachers. Current a croc that size is a rare as an 800 kg polar bear.

A large bear stands a chance to win on land but it will have to beware of the jaws and tail. On advantage a bear has is its stamina.

That's a tough scenario to picture in my mind and I just don't see the Bear being successful. Ultimately the Bear would have to try and flip the Croc on it's back to immobilize him. He has the strength to do that but the big question is, can he avoid the jaws in trying to do so. Would the Bear have the smarts to jump on the back of the head or back and pulverize it with paw strikes? Hmmmm I dunno?
With a Croc most people think the Jaws are the most important thing to watch out for, and they are. However, a Croc that large could use his tail as a battering ram and could do some serious damage with it as well.
A Croc the size of Gustave would be safe IMO from most if not all predators, even a 1500 lb Bear. I think the only thing a Croc that size worries about are Hippos and Elephants.

While I doubt Gustave can kill a full grown male hippo. The hippos seem to respect his presence.
