I have loved animals as far back as I can remember. As a young child (1950s), my favorite toys were my multitude of colorful plastic animal figurines. I also spent a lot of time outdoors, where I was constantly terrorizing Mom by bringing in things that I discovered and caught. Each new plastic animal I was gifted, I had to learn all about it. The same with every bug, lizard, snake, turtle, etc. that I captured (the animals grew bigger as I grew older).
In elementary school I read every library book about animals that I could find. This held true in the higher grades as well.
When I first discovered a wild animal face-off blog site (late 1999 or early 2000), I was absolutely amazed that most posters, I would make a wild guess at possibly 20 to 1, favored both the lion and the tiger over a grizzly (brown bear). Even at 6 or 7 years old, I figured the bear to be stronger - much stronger - than a big cat. So I started debating. My debates did not go well. Those old school books I had learned from were filled with false information. I can still remember some of the numbers; average lion 500 pounds, average tiger 700 pounds, average grizzly 1,000 pounds, average gorilla 600 pounds. So yes, I was sounding pretty foolish.
So, I began reading books. Lots of books.
Another point I will make. Nearly all posters, regardless of what animal he or she favors in a face-off, is an animal lover. Therefore we all have that in common. Of course there is also a very small number who only post to start trouble. But, don't fall into the quagmire. Do not hate the animal that is the favorite of the fanboy. I still greatly admire both the lion and the tiger.
Back then, from the late 1990s up until somewhere between 2010 and 2012, there were a fairly large number of wild animal face-off blog sites. The only topic more popular than big cat vs grizzly was lion vs tiger.
