/\ Actually the Bengal tigers are more numerous than the Indochinese tigers, therefore the tigers in India might be the best representation. Just as the Eurasian brown bears are the best representation of the brown bears. Taking that under consideration, Guate Gojira has the average Continental tigers ( which includes both a Bengal and the Amur ) at 430 pounds. Considering that we add in the Sunda tigers which average in at 262 pounds, but not such a large population, I simply estimated an average of roughly 420 pounds. *Note: remember the original question: "What is a rough estimation of Ursus arctos ( all subspecies of brown bears ) - full-grown males?" *Then we add, "What is a good rough estimate of the average full-grown male tiger, Panthera tigris ) as a species?"

( IMO ) the Indochinese tiger ( IMO ) best represents the average of all tiger subspecies. Other opinions welcome. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indochinese_tiger The Indochinese tiger's ground colouration is darker with more rather short and narrow single stripes; its skull is smaller than that of the Bengal tiger. In body size, it is smaller than Bengal and Siberian tigers. Males range in size from 255 to 285 cm (100 to 112 in) and in weight from 150 to 195 kg (331 to 430 lb). Females range in size from 230 to 255 cm (91 to 100 in) and in weight from 100 to 130 kg (220 to 290 lb).

The Eurasian brown bear best represents the typical brown bear. Average full-grown male ( 9+ years old ) roughly 600 pounds. Normal max 970 pounds.

Typical male tiger - 430 pounds. Typical tigress - 254 pounds. Typical male brown bear - 600 pounds. Typical brown she-bear - 400 pounds - ( estimate ). Normal max male - 970 pounds. Absolute max male - 1,060.42 pounds. Tigers and Brown bears each as a species ( considering all subspecies ) averaged.

Brown Bears from smallest to largest. Note: not all average weights are known. 1- Himalayan brown bear ( red bear - Tien Shan Bear ) - Ursus arctos isabellinus. 2- Gobi bear - Ursus arctos gobiensis. 3- Syrian Brown Bear - Ursus arctos syriacus - ( white-clawed bear ). 4- Saylyugem bear - ( white-clawed bear ). 5- Tibetan brown bear ( blue bear ) - Ursus arctos pruinosus. 6- Atlas bear - African brown bear - Ursus arctos crowtheri. ( extinct ) 7- Mexican grizzly - Ursus arctos ( horribilis / nelsoni )... ( extinct ) 8- North American brown bear ( grizzly ) - Ursus arctos horribilis. 9- Grolar bear - most common natural hybrid bear - brown bear/polar bear hybrid - sometimes called Prizzly bear. 10- Sitka brown bear - ursus arctos sitkensis. 11- East Siberian brown bear - Ursus arctos collaris. 12- Mongolian brown bear - Ursus arctos jeniseensis. 13- Eurasian brown bear - Ursus arctos arctos. 14- Hokkaido brown bear - Ursus arctos yesoensis. 15- Ussuri brown bear - Amur brown bear - ( black grizzly ) - Ursus arctos lasiotus. 16- Kamchatka brown bear - Ursus arctos beringianus. 17- California grizzly - Ursus arctos ( horribilis / californicus )... ( extinct ) 18- Alaskan Peninsula Brown Bear - Ursus arctos ( horribilis / gyas ). 19- Kodiak bear - Ursus arctos middendorffi. 20- Pleistocene European brown bear - Steppe bear - Ursus arctos priscus... ( extinct ) 21- Giant brown bear - Ursus maritimus tyrannus... ( extinct )

Notes concerning Reply #24 above: 9- Grolar bear is not a listed subspecies, but is a hybrid which happens naturally and there has probably always been a few around. 21- Giant brown bear. U.m. tyrannus was first considered to be an ancient polar bear. Today, some biologists believe it to be a brown bear. The scientific name will not be changed until ( or if ) more evidence is found. 6- Actual size of Atlas bear uncertain.

I would not be surprise if the giant brown bear might look a bit like a grolar or ABC brown bear.

Average Tiger using the Indochinese tiger ( Panthera tigris tigris ) as a model. Male Tiger: HB Length - 189 cm or 6 feet 2 inches. Weight - 191 kg or 421 pounds. Tigress: HB Length - 165 cm or 5 feet 5 inches. Weight - 115 kg or 254 pounds. Average Brown Bear using the Eurasian brown bear ( Ursus arctos arctos ) as a model. Male Brown Bear: HB Length - 196 cm or 6 feet 5 inches. Weight- 268 kg or 590 pounds. *So basically, the male tiger and the male brown bear are relatively at size parity ( HB Length ) although, because of his greater girth, the average brown bear outweighs the average tiger by roughly 169 pounds.

The vast majority of bears can be found in Russia (Kamchatka brown bears are in the minority; most of them are living in interior Russia); there are more brown bears than in the whole of Alaska/Canada/USA combined. So I think the Eurasian or the Ussuri brown bear would be a good representative of what your typical brown bear would look like if you randomly picked one individual out of the global population. Therefore we can round-off the averages to: the average brown bear ( Ursus arctos ) - similar in size with the Eurasian or Ussuri brown bear - should have an average of about 600 pounds ( male ) and about 400 pounds ( female ). Average tiger ( Panthera tigris ) - similar in size with the Indochinese tiger - about 430 pounds ( male ) and 260 ( female ). As a quick comparison, these tigers are smaller than a Bengal tiger, but larger than a Malayan tiger. The Indochinese tiger and the Malayan tiger were once thought of as the same subspecies. But, in 2004, it was officially stated that these two tigers are different subspecies.

The Eurasian Bear is probably the best example for the typical brown bear as a species ( Ursus arctos ). Likewise, the Indochinese tiger is probably best example of the typical tiger as a species ( Panthera tigris ).

Just as the typical brown bear ( modeled after the Eurasian bear ) is slightly smaller that Russia's Ussuri brown bear, the typical tiger ( modeled after the Indochinese tiger ) is slightly smaller than Russia's Amur tiger. Therefore, the size ratio between the Amur tiger and the Ussuri brown bear very well represents the size ratio between the typical tiger ( the all-tiger tiger ) and the typical brown bear ( the all-brown bear brown bear ).

This study shows the typical tiger at 353 pounds and the typical brown bear at 551 pounds. "Taker came up with similar number for the tiger at; domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/773/weight-collection?page=1 / reply #1. The difference in numbers, 160 kg or 195 kg is whether we average the weights with each subspecies equally or should we consider population numbers. It seems that either way ( a matter of preference ), the brown bear has roughly a 200-pound weight advantage over the tiger.

This would place the typical male tiger at 160 kg ( 352.74 pounds - or 353 pounds ) and the typical brown bear at 250 kg or 551.16 pounds. The difference is roughly 198 pounds, rounded off to 200 pounds.

Even at weight-parity, the brown bear is stronger. When we consider the 200 pound weight advantage that a typical full-grown male brown bear has over a typical full-grown male tiger, then it becomes crystal clear that a face-off between the two is a mismatch. ( good point yz )
