I just read it, an 1000 lb grizzly bear, wow, that must have hurt. And timothy did not even die fast, looks like he suffered alot. the key here is that timothy did not have an interaction with that bear before. What a story.

I agree Tom. Timothy envisioned himself as being like Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey, both of which were accepted into the fold by great apes. The problem was, grizzly bears are not nearly as sociable with each other as the great apes. Not only did he lack the education or animal knowledge needed, but his plan was pretty-much impossible. I hate it not only for him ( his heart was in the right place ) but for his family and most especially for his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard.

How aggressive is a kodiak bear compared to other brown bears? Coastal grizzlies, including the Kodiak are less aggressive than inland grizzlies. While the coastal bears are feasting on salmon, the inland varieties are hunting and scavenging desperately for enough protein to gain the needed weight.

How important do you think aggression in a fight between a brown bear and a big cat? I could be wrong but I think the most aggressive the bear is the better chance it have of winning.

The grizzly will win this fight most of the time due to strength, weight, durability, and intelligence ( fighting ability ). Aggression is a big plus.

While the coastal bears are feasting on salmon, the inland varieties are hunting and scavenging desperately for enough protein to gain the needed weight. Absolutely they are. Generally speaking when your belly is full, your much less likely to be agitated. When your always hungry, your temper is on a shorter fuse. Before the Salmon runs in Alaska Bears can be more aggressive not only with each other but of humans as well. This is especially true if the natural berry crop is not good which in early season makes up a sizable portion of their diet. Come summer tempers can flare between males for the best fishing spots, but for the most part each bear knows his pecking order and usually there's enough fish to go around for everyone. It's at this time that Bears are usually much more tolerable with each other and humans as well. I've seen pictures of people getting remarkably close to these coastal bears as long as they stay calm and keep a certain distance without a problem. Of course there's always the chance that there will be some ornery individuals, just as there are in people.

Sloth bears can be very aggressive. A trait inherited from their grizzly ancestors. No more aggressive than a Canadian barren ground grizzly, a Tibetan blue bear, or perhaps a Gobi grizzly. With these four bears, its a close contest.

www.nwf.org/News-and-Magazines/National-Wildlife/Animals/Archives/2006/Grizzly-Bears-on-Ice.aspx Aklak vs. Nanook: A Tale of Two Bears Like most scientists, the Inuit view Aklak, the grizzly bear, and Nanook, the polar bear, as two very different creatures. Their traditional tales of polar bears almost always portray these animals as powerful, keen-witted and worthy of great esteem. The grizzly, on the other hand, is seen as a more sinister beast, one that is likely to charge unexpectedly in an explosive manner. Some biologists might agree with that assessment, citing evidence that barren ground grizzlies appear to be more aggressive than grizzlies living farther south. One explanation, they say, could be that northern grizzlies evolved in a treeless world where there's no place to hide, so threatening one's opponent may make far more sense than fleeing. Whatever the reason, bear biologist Andrew Derocher says he is "a lot more comfortable capturing a big polar bear on the sea ice than a small grizzly on land. Grizzlies tend to react much more aggressively. It can be very unnerving."

Wow Brobear....what that bear biologist said is just incredible. He rather catch a big polar bear on ice 1000 + lbs, than a small grizzly. that is why i think the inland grizzly might be the most agressive.

Consider that a 300-pound sloth bear will sometimes go head-to-head with a 450-pound tiger in self-defense. Consider that a 300-pound barren ground grizzly will sometimes go head-to-head with a 900-pound musk ox - and kill it. If a 300-pound sloth bear were to go head-to-head against a 300-pound grizzly... I'd bet the farm on the grizzly.

My bet is also on the grizzly. There are basically zero accounts of sloth bears killing anything. Havent seen nothing. So yeah, its obvious at same weight a grizzly beats a sloth bear. In fact we have a book account of a sun bear killing a tiger. Sloth bears are very agressive and know how to survive a fight, but they are not good at killing.

I am unable to post pictures, but here is the story of the sloth bear who killed a polar bear. Keep in mind that zoo polar bears of the distant past were poor specimens. shaggygod.proboards.com/thread/817/polar-bear-sloth-account

Both the sloth bear and the sun bear can be highly aggressive when aggression is needed, but both are the least muscular of all living bears - at least of the genus Ursus ( real bears ).

Yeah, i had totally forgotten about this account, but i have seen it before yes, sloth bear killed a polar bear, incredible. 2 things here. #1, this must be the only account of a sloth bear killing a larger animal, or basically any animal at all. #2, its the same pattern as always, polar bears have done like crap in captivity.
