Yeah that list could be very long. Just off the top of my head I would include Saving Private Ryan.

The movie Grease also came to mind. Edit and add ( rather than create another post )... two Jimmy Stewart movies: Harvey ( 1950 ) and It's a Wonderful Life ( 1946 ).

If anyone likes submarines, the father and mother of all movies is Das Boot (1981). I haven´t seen any movie coming even close to it, but many which have obviously copied some things from it.
Long movie, but it really takes you there. Captain to whose experiences it´s based on was consultant while they filmed it. German movie and maybe the best war movie, which I know. At least in top three and by far the best what comes to movies which are about submarine warfare.
And when talking about war movies, Dunkirk (2017) is one different kind in a way, but same time superb, British movie. When I was in the movie theatre it was first time, when also sound of hitting bullets was like it is in reality, when hitting walls or doors nearby. It was interesting movie, while many characters, not anyone lifted up so much. In many ways different kind of movie, when watching war movies. Worth to watch if any interest towards WW2 movies.
And let´s put third war movie from WW2. Yamato (2005). Japanese war movie focusing to the story of the biggest battleship of WW2. Very interesting to watch, imo.
Of course we Finnish have our national treasure, The Unknown Soldier with three different versions from 1956, 1985 and latest 2017. This latest version has been in international distribution also and there is argues about it, that is the best one version from 1956 or 2017. Maybe for Finnish 1956 version has certain things. Those actors all had seen war in different ways, some were kids, some teenagers and some fought in the war themselves during it. That film is based on experiences of Väinö Linna during the war and in his unit. All characters are based on real people.

Saving Private Ryan was a great movie, but long and often slow-moving. Like "Dances with Wolves" ( 1990 ), I enjoyed it once, but will not likely ever watch it a second round. Dunkirk was good; again only once for me. Inglourious Basterds ( 2009 ) I've watched several times now. Two war movies to my liking are Sands of Iwo Jima ( 1949 ) and The Dirty Dozen ( 1967 ). Post Vietnam movie, Uncommon Valor ( 1983 ) I enjoyed.

Post Vietnam movie, Uncommon Valor ( 1983 ) I enjoyed. Yeah, movies are always subjective expriences. I´ve seen Dances with Wolves a few times, always a few years in between, can´t watch it many times in a row, it´s truly slow-moving. Then again Inglourious Basterds I´ve seen once so, that I watched it almost all the time. I think, that because I´ve been always interested in history, too unrealistic movies aren´t war movies for me at all. Just action movies installed to war environment. So Inglourious Basterds is for me like bunch of some good action scenes, not a movie so much. Fury (2014) was also good as an action movie, but not as war movie for me because again so many unrealistic things there. I´ve seen it once but not likely ever going to watch it second time. Some nice action scenes, like in a video game or something. It was kind of disappointment for me, good actors, but some things just didn´t work for me. When talking about different kind of movies, one excellent one is Trainspotting (1996), at one moment laughing and in the other feeling so bad. And all mixed emotions it creates.

For each his own; we're all different - and that's a good thing. For me, too much realism can ruin a movie; depending n the movie subject. Most often, realism either means slow-paced, sad, and boring or else horrifically gory. As for a war movie ( IMO ), it should never portray war as a delightful fun experience filled with pride and glory. The horrors of war should be shown, but if it does not leave the viewer with a sense of pride and patriotism, then the movie failed. Even in those wars that ( IMO ) were handled horribly by the government; the soldiers were nevertheless patriots. I'm a big fan of the TV series MASH. Even though it is placed in the Korean War, it greatly resembles Dong Ha in Vietnam ( tent city ) where I served. Realistic - the poker games, the drinking, and even the ( un )practical jokes. Unrealistic - on the show, you never see a cigarette and no bad language. I never cared for marijuana and would trade it for American cigarettes and cigars. Also, at Dong Ha, a day never passed that we were not hit with mortars or artillery.

About war movies, different countries have often their own patriotic movies, some are ok, some are so naive, that giving headache I like films, which remember, that both sides are people. "Heroes and villains" can be found in all armies as well as patriots. Our former president said it well, when he told how he was thinking on the front during WW2 when fighting against Soviet Union. He told, that when he was there and saw all that killing, he was thinking himself, that "there has to be a better way to handle things than this". Some films manage to present that same idea better, some worse. I like those, which do it better.

Does anyone remember seeing the 2004 movie Downfall? Set during the battle of Berlin and Hitlers final days. Dutch actor Bruno Ganz does a superb job in the role of Adolf Hitler. Must see movie. subtitles but superb none the less.

German subtitles but superb none the less. It´s a really good one, German film. Like Das Boot takes you in the submarine, Downfall or Der Untergang, as original name is, takes you in that bunker. Btw, when staying with warfilms, Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) is one worth to watch, imo, if not seen in past. Those flight scenes alone are quite something, no cgi in those days.

Tora! Tora! Tora! was a really good movie. Also Pearl Harbor ( 2001 ). Maybe you also read; the movie-makers had to down-size the number of airplanes flying over Pearl Harbor because the realistic image was too unbelievable.

Yeah, it has been something unreal at the time, when thinking about people who actually lived it there. No warnings and suddenly all hell breaking loose. Japanese were extremely lucky in many ways what comes to it, that they were able to do it, sadly.
