Humerus - long bone of the upper limb or forelimb of land vertebrates. Femur - thigh bone, is the proximal bone of the hindlimb in tetrapod vertebrate. I was never arguing about the sloth bear having stout limb bones. When it comes down to which bear species is the most muscular ( length parity ), I would line them up like this: 1- brown bear / 2- polar bear / 3 and 4- black bears. 5,6,7, and 8 - sloth bear, sun bear, Andean bear, and giant panda ( no idea what order ). *Edit and add: Probably no bear species can claim greater raw courage than the sloth bear.

Reply #280: i agree with that brobear. The confusion was with your original phrase which was this:
In this debate, when we talk about "robust", we usually mean limbs. But now i see you meant to say "muscular". Of course the brown bear is more muscular than a sloth bear even at same size.

"But now i see you meant..." *If we were sitting comfortably in some quiet place having these discussions over a cup of hot coffee or a mug of cold beer, we would be having far fewer of these "misunderstandings" than we do when typing on a keyboard.

If short faced bears existed today, they would grow just as heavy or heavier in captivity.

carnivora.net/polar-bear-ursus-maritimus-t1438-s60.html#p161495Polar bears bites are underrated. In the account posted by Warsaw, a male polar bear killed a female polar bear by puncturing her skull. I believe polar bears are better at slicing thick hide like tigers and lions and extinct big cats. Polar bears are also better at slicing than brown bears.

When a full-grown male brown bear sees a full-grown male tiger; what does he see? *A big predator that he feared when he was a younger bear. Those were the years that he also feared full-grown male bears. When a full-grown male tiger sees a full grown male brown bear; what does he see? *A mauler and a brawler. A thug and a mugger. That big brawny loner whom everyone avoids - including the tiger.

The spectacled bear is the weakest bear pound to pound.

A male polar bear will have stronger paw swipes than any big cat extinct or extant.
