As a 'Movie Critic' I am very hard on movies and characters that I really like. Share your movie criticism here.

I am a Tarzan buff. I read all the novels and I watched all of the old movies ( with the exception of some silent movies that I missed ). 'The Legend of Tarzan' - 2016. I like the movie; but I do have a few complaints. 1- The story-line is based on some actual historic events. Samuel L. Jackson as George Washington Williams, an American entrepreneur and veteran of the Indian Wars who becomes an ally to Tarzan ( a real person ). At the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885, the Congo Basin is claimed by King Leopold II of the Belgians. Five years later, Leopold has accrued massive debts in exploiting the resources of the Congo Free State, and sends his envoy Léon Rom to secure the fabled diamonds of Opar. Rom's expedition is massacred by warriors led by Chief Mbonga, who offers Rom diamonds in exchange for Tarzan. ( most of this is true to history ). *Problem: John Clayton, Lord Greystoke - Tarzan - was born on the coast of Africa in 1888. In 1890 ( when this adventure takes place ) Tarzan would have been 2 years old. 2- In this movie, Tarzan has blond hair. I cannot understand why Hollywood allows such mistakes when their makeup department can easily change someone's hair color. Tarzan has black hair. 3- In the place of the mangani ( the great apes which raised Tarzan ) they used computer-generated gorillas. The managani are more like the Bali apes. 4- Tarzan's best friends among humans - and very much an adopted family - are the Wazari ( the mightiest tribe in all of Africa ). They were tall, athletic, regal, and very black. A warrior was armed with an oval shield, a long spear, and a headdress of ostrich plumes. They are a fierce and noble people. *Problem: They do not travel through the trees like Tarzan.

There are many films I can criticise. For example, the green light sabres seems to have disappeared in the new Star Wars films.

Quote: Which actor was your favorite who portrayed Tarzan? Johnny Weissmüller, even though his Tarzan was very different from the Tarzan of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. Johnny had this "wild untamed" look in his eyes and did not appear like a civilized man wearing a loincloth. Of course, I knew the Weissmuller version long before I ever discovered the novels.

The Wolf-Man - 2010. Benicio Del Toro as Lawrence Talbot ( the Wolf-Man ). Emily Blunt as Gwen Conliffe. Anthony Hopkins as Sir John Talbot. Great actors, but the greatness ends there. This movie totally trashed its effort for a reboot. In the classic version - Larry Talbot comes home to England from America, a happy and well adjusted young man. He meets Gwen and falls in love. But, during their first outing, Larry is bitten by the gypsy Bela, in the form of a werewolf. Once Larry becomes a werewolf himself, he becomes a miserable person who eventually become suicidal. In this sorry remake, Larry shows up a miserable person. Everyone in the movie seems to be miserable. In this movie, the entire Talbot family are werewolves. In the classic, Larry's father, Sir John, could not bring himself to believe in werewolves. *I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. But, the price of the movie ticket was wasted.

Quote: Which actor was your favorite who portrayed Tarzan? *I will add: From the very first Tarzan movie ( 'Tarzan of the Apes' - 1918 ) to this latest attempt ( 'The Legend of Tarzan - 2016 ) no actor, no movie producer has gotten the character nor the story right. Ironically, the silent 1918 film came the closest to getting the story right. But Elmo Lincoln looked more like a Neanderthal caveman that Tarzan. I'm still waiting to see TARZAN done right.

One thing I did not like about Transformers: The Last Night is that Unicron did not come out and fight in the battle. Again it could just be my impatience.

Another favorite movie of mine: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - 2003. 1- Sean Connery as Allan Quatermain - good choice. 2- Naseeruddin Shah as Captain Nemo - good choice. 3- Peta Wilson as Mina Harker - good choice. 4- Tony Curran as Rodney Skinner ( Invisible Man ) - good choice. 5- Stuart Townsend as Dorian Gray - good choice. 6- Shane West as Tom Sawyer - bad choice. In the novels, Tom Sawyer was just a boy ( 10 to 12 years old ) before the Civil War ( 1861-1865 ). Tom Sawyer should have been roughly the same age as Allan Quatermain at the turn-of-the-century ( 1899-1900 ). 7- Jason Flemyng as Dr. Henry Jekyll / Edward Hyde - good choice of actor. But completely wrong as Mr. Hyde. In the novels, Mr. Hyde was not big ( like the Hulk ). He was actually some smaller than as Dr. Jekyll - but purely evil and somewhat simian in appearance. The 1931 movie adaptation ( the only horror movie to ever win an Academy Award ), starring Fredric March, got the character down perfectly.

The Wolf-Man - 1941. Larry Talbot ( Lon Chaney Jr. ) is sitting in a chair the first time he transforms into a werewolf. He is wearing dress-pants and a white t-shirt. Then; he is out prowling the woods wearing his brown cover-all work clothes.
*Seriously? A werewolf changes into more appropriate outdoors clothing? Wrong. Reality check; a werewolf would simply rip away all clothing ( as would a wild wolf ).

The most popular alien monsters of recent years; Alien and Predator. There are only 5 of their movies that ( IMO ) are worth having in a collection: 1- Alien - 1979. 2- Aliens - 1986. 3- Predator - 1987. 4- Predator 2 - 1990. 5- AVP ( Alien vs Predator ) - 2004.

Toho Monsters. There have been many: godzilla.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Godzilla_monsters If I were to somehow inherit the franchise, I would ( one movie at a time ) permanently kill off all but three: Godzilla, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. I would kill-off about a half-dozen per movie. Fist to go would be Mothra. I mean seriously - a giant moth? In the movie "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" Mothra defeated Rodan ( no way ). Rodan is an icon; a classic. Both Godzilla and Rodan first appeared in 1956. I was there. Mothra is a bug. *For those who might like to visit my girlfriend's site: www.elvira.com/

I really hate it when someone writes a story for a movies which completely destroys a fictional character from that which the original author created or which has evolved within our society to a certain standard. Examples: 1- Hook -1991. Robin Williams plays a 40-year-old Peter Pan - the boy who never grows up!!! This movie is entertaining, but completely destroys the classic tale. 2- The Santa Clause -1994. Tim Allen causes an accident which kills the real Santa Clause. So, he becomes the new Santa Clause. Really!!! People love this movie - I'm not one of them.
