www.gorillas-world.com/ WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA - GORILLA GORILLA GORILLA ( 375.67 lbs ). CROSS RIVER GORILLA - GORILLA GORILLA DIEHLI EASTERN LOWLAND GORILLA - GORILLA BERINGEI GRAUERI ( 386.25 lbs ). MOUNTAIN GORILLA - GORILLA BERINGEI BERINGEI ( 358.25 lbs ). *According to data posted by theundertaker45 with scant data, body size and weight is not well established, but the most recent estimates suggest that among adult males Gorilla gorilla Beringei are the smallest at 162.5 kg ( 358.25 pounds ). Gorilla gorilla gorilla at 170.4 kilograms ( 375.67 pounds ). Gorilla gorilla graueri at 175.2 kilograms ( 386.25 pounds ). *From what I am seeing, there is very little difference in size between the species and subspecies of gorillas. *At the various animal face-off forums, a common disadvantage given to the great apes is that they have thin skin. This idea is contradicted on Reply #330.

Ok so this pretty reliable and precise info, this is what we were looking for. The websites just give a general weight of gorillas, but nothing precise. Thanks Undertaker. So here we have 3 gorilla subspecies, only missing one.
EASTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (GORILLA BERINGEI GRAUERI)- 175 KG (385 LBS).
MOUNTAIN GORILLA (GORILLA BERINGEI BERINGEI)-162 KG (357 LBS).
WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (GORILLA GORILLA GORILLA)-170 KG (374 LBS).
CROSS RIVER GORILLA (GORILLA GORILLA DIEHLI)-NOT MENTIONED. THIS IS THE LEAST STUDIED GORILLA AND MOST ENDANGERED. BODY WEIGHT IS NOT KNOWN TO BE MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THE WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA.

Reply #334:
These are normally age 8-13. At around 13 they will become a silverback. Most times they are kicked out of the troop by the silverback because it might challenge for dominance of the troop. So they leave and create their own troop.

A silverback gorilla would probably kick out his own sons before they reach their prime. This is to lengthen his period of dominance in the troop.

A silverback gorilla would probably kick out his own sons before they reach their prime. This is to lengthen his period of dominance in the troop. All of the juvenile gorillas in the troop are his offspring unless there are some born before his take-over. In this, I have never heard of a bull gorilla killing the offspring of other male gorillas. But I'm no authority on gorillas. I do have this sneaking feeling though that King Kodiak might be leaning in that direction. He might be changing his name to King Kong in the future. But honestly, as a kid and young adult, the gorilla was my favorite animal. Still right up there near the top of my top ten list.

No, you read what he said wrong, GreenArtos said "kick out" not killing. The black blacks are kicked out of the troops by their fathers because these will start to fight for dominance. But they might also leave the troop by themselves because of lack of mating rigths in the troop as the silverback takes all the females.
Actually, Thats not a bad idea brobear, ha ha ha.

I already posted a source that gives 162.5kg for the male Eastern gorilla. Not that it makes a difference in my opinion. I would still strongly support the lioness even if the gorilla is 175kg. But I want to know where you're getting the info from." Guys, check this out please: The above post was posted by Lightning at Carnivora in reply to brobear's post about the Eastern lowland gorilla average weight of 175 kg (385 lbs). He is asking from what source he got it from, guess from where? HIS OWN SOURCE! LMAO, this kid is so stupid and unknowing about gorillas that he does not even know that the Eastern gorilla has 2 subspecies. So he is only posting the mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) which is 162 kg, but he does not realize that there is another Easten gorilla subspecie, the eastern lowland gorilla (gorilla beringei graueri) which clearly states 175.2 kg. And this is HIS OWN SOURCE, so funny. This guy does not even understand the different gorilla subspecies. See? How can we take this guy seriously if he does not even know the basics about gorillas?
HERE LOOK, HIS OWN SOURCE, I HIGHLIGHTED ON ORANGE WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (GORILLA BERINGEI GRAUERI) 175.2 KG.
So these are the 3 subspecies listed on this book, which is HIS OWN SOURCE. But the idiot is only posting then mountain gorilla, that is why he is posting the 162 kg weight. I guess he has no idea that the "gorilla beringei graueri" which is how is listed in the book IS THE OTHER EASTERN GORILLA SUBSPECIE, THE LARGEST ONE. SO FUNNY.
HE DOES NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THIS ONE BELOW IS THE OTHER EASTERN GORILLA SUBSPECIE:
EASTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (GORILLA BERINGEI GRAUERI)- 175 KG (385 LBS).
SEE, HE IS ONLY POSTING THIS ONE BELOW THE 162 KG ONE:
MOUNTAIN GORILLA (GORILLA BERINGEI BERINGEI)-162 KG (357 LBS).
WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (GORILLA GORILLA GORILLA)-170 KG (374 LBS).

Posted by the Bold One. First of all, if you look up top, it says its from captive gorillas, the mean weight is 161 kg (355 lbs). But then it says that 2/3 of the observed weights lie between 141 kg (311 lbs) and 181 kg (399 lbs). So these weights are not that different from the book posted by TheUndertaker. This even says alot of gorillas reach 181 kg (399 lbs) which is even higher than the 385 lb average weight given for the Eastern lowland gorilla in Taker's book. So thanks for this Champion of the lion.
At the bottom right, where it says table 1, those are captive gorillas also, and it does not say that they are adults, so that table is useless.

This study offers the first comparative perspective on gorilla populations throughout their natural range, and covers all known subspecies. Discussing phylogeny, evolution, functional morphology, behavioral ecology and conservation biology, this multidisciplinary work will be essential reading for primatologists, anthropologists, animal behaviorists and evolutionary biologists.

Standing Height: Cross River Gorilla - Western Lowland Gorilla - 167cm = 5 feet 5.75 inches. Mountain Gorilla - 170cm = 5 feet 6.93 inches. Eastern Lowland Gorilla - 182cm = 5 feet 11.65 inches.

Comparing the relation of standing height to body weight the Cross River gorilla might actually be the most robust subspecies or at least equal to the Western Lowland Gorilla.
Mountain Gorilla: BMI of 52.9 Eastern Lowland Gorilla: BMI of 52.8 Western Lowland Gorilla: BMI of 61 Cross River Gorilla: Unknown; but should be equal or slightly higher compared to the Western Lowland Gorilla
Also noteworthy is the fact that Cross River gorillas produce the largest females at an average weight of 93kg.
The total average weight for the Eastern gorilla would be ~361.67lbs (~164.05kg) for males and ~176.92lbs (~80.25kg) for females; the total average weight for the Western gorilla would be ~369.83lbs (~167.75kg) for males and ~181.33lbs (~82.25kg) for females.
The total average weight for a gorilla concluded out of the averages for all four subspecies would therefore be ~365.75lbs (~165.9kg) for males and ~179.13lbs (~81.25kg) for females; the sexual dimorphism is absolutely immense in gorillas.

Yeah, but the Eastern lowland gorilla has the greatest average weight, arm span, and chest girth. And its the tallest by far.
