Arctotherium angustidens was probably the biggest bear ever. Smilodon populator was probably the biggest cat ever at ( possibly ) 470 kg ( 1,040 pounds ). I cant even see the cat in this picture, ha ha ha. My god. The cat is going down hard. By the way, 1040 lb for the populator was normal max weight correct?

Brobear: you do realize that these 2 lived in south america during the early Pleistocene to the early Holocene epoch right? They probably crossed paths.

The very biggest of the pantherines which includes the Ngandong tiger, Panthera atrox, and several Pleistocene lion species reached an absolute maximum weight of 400 kg ( 882 pounds ). Some sabertooths a little heavier due to greater girth. Smilodon populator ( probably the biggest of all with an absolute max of 470 kg ( 1,040 pounds ).

Weight of 1040 lbs for one specimen of Smilodon populator, Largest ever. Very large for a cat, still not comparable to URSIDAE, we have a 3500 lb bear on record. That is a 2500 lb difference. Think about it.

Well; Arctotherium angustidens probably weighed somewhere between 2,500 and 3,500 pounds. 3,000 pounds can't be too far off in either direction. He still outweighs the biggest-ever cat by a full ton.

So what would happen if we take that specimen of Angustidens of 3500 lbs and make him fight that specimen of Populator of 1040 lbs inside a large cage?

The same thing would happen to the Smilodon that would happen to a house cat if he were pinned-up with a spotted hyena.

Nice comparisons. Notice how robust the brown bears look to the polar bear.

With wild animals ( as pictured ) polar bear is heavier. When considering both wild and captive animals, then the Kodiak bear is the biggest bear. I just remembered an account which said that polar bear unlike brown bears don't grow unusually large in captivity. I believe that account but I forgot who posted it and am unable to find it.
