The skull of a female Kodiak bear is relatively massive. Imagine if it was that of a male.

I'm corn-fuzed. There are two subspecies of sun bears; Sumatran sun bear - Helarctos malayanus malayanus and Bornean sun bear - Helarctos malayanus euryspilus. Both Borneo and Sumatra are islands. So, which subspecies of sun bear lives in the Malyan mainland of Asia?

The sun bears from Asia seems to have the largest skulls overall.

So, which subspecies of sun bear lives in the Malyan mainland of Asia? OK, I can answer my own question with info from our very own sun-bear page: 1 - H. m. malayanus (Raffles, 1821) — inhabits Asian mainland and Sumatra; 2 - H. m. euryspilus (Horsfield, 1825) — occurs only on the island of Borneo.

The sun bear also ranges on mainland Asia, not just the islands of Borneo and Sumatra:
Range: Sun bears are found primarily in the dense lowland tropical forests of southeast Asia; specifically in Bangladesh; Brunei Darussalam; Cambodia; China; India; Indonesia; Lao People’s Democratic Republic; Malaysia; Myanmar (Burma); Thailand and Vietnam. Their present range is highly fragmented (see map below)and they have been extirpated from much of their former habitat The sun bear is now regionally extinct in Singapore. The subspecies Helarctos malayanus euryspilus (Borneo sun bear) is found only on the island of Borneo (within the territories of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia).

Reply 269. Given the Arctodus lives in Alaska, they surely encountered the Alaskan brown bears. Any information about them entering the North Pole?

I've gone through the bear section of Pocock's "The Fauna of British India" and made a table on all skull measurements that have been taken; they are sorted according to Total Score (Length+Width of the skull) ranging from highest to lowest and the bears scoring best in each category are marked in bold; enjoy it!
GSL - Greatest Skull Length CBL - Condylobasal Length ZW - Zygomatic Width POW - Postorbital Width IOW - Interorbital Width MW - Maxillary Width MAW - Mastoid Width LWR - Length-Width-Ratio of the Skull TS - Total Score of the Skull N - Number of Individuals
All length/width measurements in mm! I'd recommend to press your right mouse button on the image and to open it in a new tab, then the quality is better.Quick Fact: Male sun bears have skulls as wide as those of lionesses/tigresses more than twice their size.

Interesting. I thought the Tibetan blue bear to be as small as the Himalayan brown bear ( red bear ). Also; what is this Ursus arctos shanorum?

Reply #272, great info Taker. Am surprised to see the Himalayan black bear so low on that list. Are those all adult males on that list?

brobear King Kodiak Regarding your questions: 1. Ursus arctos shanorum was ascribed to a skull collected in Burma; that is out of any brown bear's range normally. I therefore left it in its original Latin form. 2. All skulls in this collection are harvested from adult specimens; I left out the subadults.

King Kodiak brobear I've taken a look at a illustration of different skull measurements (by Verdugo) and the mastoid breadth is a whole different measurement. It measures the breadth of the mastoid processes behind the zygomatic arches; guys, this Ursus Ingressus skull had a much higher score than just 32.5 inches when talking about the zygomatic arches. I've marked two lines in this brown bear skull; the first line on the left marks the mastoid breadth and the second line marks the zygomatic breadth (I know the lines are a bit over the edges but that should just show where the measurements have to be taken). I'll compare this skull to the largest American lion skull (where we both know length/mastoid width): Ursus IngressusGreatest Length: 571.4mm Mastoid Width: 255.6mm Total Score: 827mm or 32.56 inches Panthera AtroxGreatest Length: 465.7mm Mastoid Width: 170.8mm Total Score: 636.5mm or 25.06 inches The debate on skulls has been settled guys, this enormous individual can't and will probably never be contested by any cat. Probably belonged to a specimen weighing ~1 ton. Good place for a complete list of bear skulls: WORLD'S RECORDS BLACK BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 14 12/16 Greatest width of skull: 8 14/16 SCORE: 23 10/16 WORLD'S RECORDS GRIZZLY BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 17 4/16 Greatest width of skull: 10 9/16 SCORE: 27 13/16 WORLD'S RECORDS ALASKA BROWN BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 17 15/16 Greatest width of skull: 12 13/16 SCORE: 30 12/16 WORLD'S RECORDS POLAR BEAR: Greatest length of skull without lower jaw: 18 8/16 Greatest width of skull: 11 7/16 SCORE: 29 15/16

Ussuri Brown Bear - animals.fandom.com/wiki/Ussuri_Brown_Bear It is very similar to the Kamchatka brown bear, though it has a more elongated skull, a less elevated forehead, somewhat longer nasal bones and less separated zygomatic arches, and is somewhat darker in color, with some individuals being completely black, a fact which once led to the now refuted speculation that black individuals were hybrids of brown bears and Asian black bears. Adult males have skulls measuring 38.7 cm (15.2 in) long and 23.5 cm (9.3 in) wide. They can occasionally reach greater sizes than their Kamchatka counterparts: the largest skull measured by Sergej Ognew(1931) was only slightly smaller than that of the largest Kodiak brown bear (the largest subspecies of brown bears) on record at the time. _________________________________________________________________ *The record-size American grizzly skull ( as seen in the post directly above ) is an old skull found from the time of the huge bison herds. Those historic bears of the Great Plains ( according to W.P. Hubbard ) were larger than Russia's Ussuri brown bears.

The world's record grizzly skull has a total score of 27 13/16. The world record Ussuri brown bear skull has a total score of 28 11/16 inches. So, the record Ussuri bear has the record American grizzly bear beat. However, the "historic grizzly" skull found was very likely simply a typical grizzly of the times. Therefore, we cannot say with any certainty that Russia's black grizzly is bigger than the grizzly of the Great Plains before both grizzlies and bison were hunted to near extinction. I believe that, if we still had the bison herds and grizzlies out on the prairie, the grizzly of that region would be the largest inland brown bear. But, this will probably remain a mystery.
