Why No Dholes in North America?
This however, is just my opinion. Do you think wolves had a part in dhole extinctions? thenormalguy It is rather highly unlikely. A massive number of species [both carnivores and herbivores] have seen the sun lowered on them [thinking of the american cheetah, the american lion et al]. Wolves cohabits with dholes in India, Nepal, China, Pakistan ? and others places. They aren't going to make dholes extinct.

We have Wolves and coyotes coexisting. Wolves will kill coyotes given the chance so coyotes learn avoid them like the plague. As well, Coyotes are one of the most adaptable mammals I can think of, able to survive just about anywhere including close proximity to humans.

I been in some debates as of late of youtube. What is you guys opinion of wolves fighting dogs such as pitbulls and kangals? Some people think pitbulls and kangals can defeat a large timber wolf. I am not too sure on this. I think Dogo Aregentinos may be able to stand up to a wolf because these dogs can defeat mountain lions from what I understand.

One-on-one, I believe that a cougar could defeat any dog breed, wild or domestic, most of the time. As for a big timber wolf vs a Molossus type dog, I simply wouldn't wager very much either way.

So you don't think any dog breed can take on a wolf?

So you don't think any dog breed can take on a wolf? Sure; but only a percentage. There are numerous big bully breeds out there. A dog in the caliber of the bull mastiff or Great Dane ( one-on-one ) would defeat a wolf - sometimes. Here is a list of some of the most "bad-ass" dog breeds; but I doubt that any breed could take down a timber wolf every time. www.dogbreedinfo.com/dogsbreed/molossertypes.htm

What comes to certain dogs, it´s good to remember that some of them are bred to guard livestock from predators. Like Kangals, they are big enough to face a wolf and fight with success. Naturally it can go bad for a dog too, but it has all what is needed to confront a wolf. If there is pack of wolves, it´s another thing.
And if looking a breed like Caucasian Shepherd Dog, I wouldn´t give to some wolf practically any chance against it, it´s again bred to be effective guarding dog, anything less than a big cat or a bear would be frankly saying in deep Crap with a dog like it. And when looking at a bit smaller breeds... rottweiler... there are some dog breeds, which are bred to be able to protect their owners way more than some other breeds. I give a lot of credit to wolves in many ways, but they have limits too. Trained big guarding dogs are no jokes.

Reply #397 and Reply #398 shows how sad the struggle for survival in the natural world can be.
