Earlier, we saw a thread "Brown Bear dominate, kill, eat and rob tigers" thread; and just like that, here is new topic going to discover that according to reliable sources brown bears and polar bears can easily kill a male African lion in a fight whereas, in prehistoric times, Cave bears or steppe brown bears invariably dominated the cave lions. Note worthy, none of the thing that would be posted here is fabricated or from an unreliable source. If any doubts, please check out the links. On the other hand, if someone wants to see the exposure of the reality of the accounts of lions overhand above bears, see this: domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/1478/lions-killing-bears-accounts-analysis

Before we see accounts of bears killing or deafeating lions in fights, i would like to show this thibg separately from accounts so its importance cpuld be emphasized. That, in ancient roman arena and modern Californian pit fights, bears always killed lions sometimes in seconds. And the proof, which would be shown is from reliable books and authors. See here: Brown Bears always defeated African lions in Ancient Roman arenas(1) The Bear: History of a fallen king The author of this first source is Micheal Pastoureau (born 17 June 1947) who is a French professor of medieval history and an expert in Western symbology. So its undoubtable in much sense.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Pastoureau
Note that the Bears were mostly from Atlas mountains (Africa) and Carpathian mountains (Central europe). While the Lions were Barbary lions since romans imported them from their north african provinces (Page 137). So those were huge lions.
"A bear always defeated a lion or a panther in a single combat".
"IN THE CIRCUS ARENA, THE BEARS WERE PRACTICALLY INVINCIBLE, ESPECIALLY THE GIANT BEARS IMPORTED FROM CALEDONIA (SCOTLAND), DALMATIA, AND THE CARPATHIANS. THEY FOUGHT BULLS, LIONS, AND SPECIALIZED GLADIATORS ASSISTED BY DOGS."

(2) Bears of the North: A year inside their worlds
And here is the second reliable source confiming the same thing. Its from the author named Wayne Lynch who is a Canadian biologist, photographer and writter.
www.waynelynch.ca/
"The african lion is sometimes touted as the king of the beasts but is no match for most adult btown bears or polar bears. In ancient rome, when lions were pitted against brown bears, burly bruin always invariably killed those lions."

1943: Bear knocks out lion with one swipe.
"PART TWO THE DETROIT FREE PRESS SUNDAY. OCTOBER Z. 13: 17 -J ear -Old Blazes Path as r Buckeym Whip Missouri, 27 to 6 Ward ffj to the Wise THE LION has been called the king of beasts and forsooth it Is a noble-looking creature. But whether it has been called the king of beasts because it can conquer any other beast is something else again. Big game men have debated the point for years, some contending that the tiger is a tougher customer and that a full grown tiger would make short work of a good healthy lion. Others have maintained that the bear the big Kodiak bear, for instance would knock a lion over the top rope as the saying goes, if they ever met in the boxing ring. We wouldn't know about that for we never saw a lion fight a tiger or a bear or anything else but a chunk of raw meat. But we do recall reading somewhere about a lion that once got into a bear pit at a zoo, gave an appraising glance to a husky grizzly and then, figuratively speaking, spit on its hands and said, "Dinner!" He is reported to have charged the walking chow line, which thereupon drew back its left paw (grizzlies are left hook artists according to this story) and with one sock knocked that lion to hellandgone. It also rendered him completely null and void. As we said before, we don't know whether a lion can beat a bear or vice versa, but we do know a lot of people who have pronounced opinions about the outcome of battle between the football Lion and the football Bear that is going to take place at Briggs Stadium Sunday afternoon."

It is noteworthy, as the author said that, in Ice age, huge Californian Grizzly bears might have destroyed American lions! Book: Man meets grizzly by Young and Beyers
"I have read, too, what has been written by the great hunters, but none of them knew the bear of California. He is the sovereign of beasts; in strength, weight, endurance, and sagacity superior to the lion, and I doubt not has formerly destroyed some great and powerful tribe of lions on this continent."
