We know that a Bengal tiger will stalk and ambush a sloth bear. We know that when a sloth bear runs from a tiger, the tiger will kill that bear in a chase and catch scenario. We know that the Amur tiger will stalk and ambush moon bears, adolescent brown bears, and adult female brown bears. The question here is, how often does a tigress hunt and kill bears?

From "Mammals of the Soviet Union By Vladimir Georgievich Geptner, A. A. Nasimovich, Andreĭ Grigorʹevich" "Early in May, 1951 on the bank of Tatibe River (Iman tributary), a bear was found (body lengh 158 cm, weight 170kg), which had obviously been mauled by tigress" ______________________________________________________________________________________ 158 cm = 5 feet 2 inches. 170 kg = 374.79 pounds. According to Warsaw, who stated that according to the measurements, this was an adolescent brown bear. Typical Amur tigress roughly the same weight as the bear. *Edit and add: If the estimated weight of the bear is correct, he was probably a four-year-old.

Amur tigresses don't reach anywhere near 170 kg. They are like 120 kg on average actually. 170 kg would be a freak tigress specimen from the past century.

Bromlej (in Heptner and Sludskij, 1980, page 149), in May 1951, found the remains of a 158 cm. (way of measuring unknown) and 170 kg. (approximately) brown bear killed by a tigress near the Tatibe River. The tigress remained 3-4 days near the kill and consumed the fattiest parts. Although Bromlej didn't state anything on the age and sex of the bear, research (in two threads) showed he was misquoted by both Mazak (1983) and Heptner and Sludskij (1980). One American female researcher, in her mail to Bonns, even stated she knew of a " ... good-sized male killed in or near its den in 1951 ... ". It is not known in which circumstances the bear was killed and Bromlej didn't make statements regarding the struggle. The incident, however, is well authenticated and shows a tigress is able to kill a larger bear. _____________________________________________________________________________ Neither the tigress nor the bear were actually weighed. All weights are estimated. yz; here is what we have in our Weight Collection - domainofthebears.proboards.com/thread/773/weight-collection?page=1 Average mature Amur tiger (historical) - 477.3 pounds. Average mature Amur tigress (historical) - 303.1 pounds. Average mature Amur tiger (contemporary) - 418.9 pounds. Average mature Amur tigress (contemporary) - 266.8 pounds. Average mature Amur tiger (general) - 447.5 pounds. Average mature Amur tigress (general) - 284.4 pounds.
