Q- Do brown bears hunt tigers for food. A- No. Biologists who study tigers, as with the study of any wild animal, take dropping samples to analyze so as to understand that particular animals diet. In some locations, tigers have a small percentage of bear flesh in their diet. This bear meat comes from both hunting and scavenging. As for hunting, the tiger always chooses a bear smaller than himself. He is seeking food; not a fight. He chooses a black bear, a juvenile brown bear, or a she-bear. Bear droppings almost never reveals tiger flesh, although he will feed on a found tiger carcass. The bear is an opportunist. Tigers of every age, size, and sex avoids the adult male brown bear. Tigers are masters of being elusive. Also note; cats are not prey animals. Ussuri brown bears hunt wild boar and red deer when they seek meat, as well as fish and small mammals. They never go cat hunting. Why is a bear both a predator and a prey animal? Bears are omnivores. He feeds more heavily on vegetation than on meat. Therefore, when a tiger catches the scent of a bear, the tiger being a pure carnivore, smells a prey animal. But, after sharing the wilds of Asia with brown bears for roughly one-million years, the tiger has learned his limitations.

Tiger fans never tire of asking, "why are so few tigers killed by bears?" Well, it is true that more bears are killed by tigers than the other way around. A tiger is a full-time predator and on occasion, not often, a tiger will hunt bears. He will always choose a bear smaller than himself; nearly always a bear who weighs roughly 100-pounds less than the tiger. Bears do not hunt tigers. Add to this the fact that tigers avoid large bears within their own size range. A tiger will not ambush a moon bear of his own weight class. Even at a kill site, when an adult male brown bear usurps a carcass from a tiger, fights are extremely rare. Common sense - why would the tiger fight a beast face-to-face that he fears to attack from ambush?

When the 'Boss of the Woods' shows up, it's time for the tiger to seek prey elsewhere.
