We all know which brown bear subspecies is the biggest. But, who holds the title of the smallest? Contenders to the title: Himalayan brown bear, Tibetan brown bear, Gobi bear, and Syrian brown bear. Here are some weights we have gathered. However, there has probably been very few individual bears weighed to come up with these averages. Average mature male Himalayan brown bear - 135kg = 298 pounds. Average mature female Himalayan brown bear - 70kg = 154 pounds. Female Gobi bear ( 21 years old - 48 kg. ) - 105.82 pounds. Male Gobi bear ( 5 years old - 108 kg. ) - 238.10 pounds. Male Gobi bear ( 10 years old - 155 kg. ) - 341.72 pounds. Syrian Brown Bear - 220 to 250 pounds.

My guess is that the Gobi brown bear is the smallest and the Syrian brown bear is underestimated

Quote: My guess is that the Gobi brown bear is the smallest and the Syrian brown bear is underestimated. All of these bears live in desolate barren locations where food availability is poor. My guess is the Himalayan brown bear, but just a guess. I have yet to find any weight samples for the Tibetan "blue" bear.

I've been giving this question some thought; rethinking it. Brown bears of barren environments tend to be comparatively small due the scarcity of nutritional food resources. The smallest brown bears might be more of a question of individuals rather than subspecies. Perhaps, the Himalayan brown bear, Syrian Brown Bear, Gobi brown bear, and the Tibetan brown bear all can be equally referred to as the smallest brown bears on earth. From books I've read concerning the historical grizzly, the Mexican grizzly was described as being smaller, more vegetarian, and less aggressive than his kin. Perhaps he too might have fit into these ranks. Also, perhaps some existing grizzly populations of northern Alaska and Canada.

In terms of aggression of the smaller brown bears: Barren ground grizzly > Tibetan blue bear >Syrian brown bear or Gobi bear > Mexican grizzly > Himalayan red bear.

Very likely, there is very little if any difference in the weight/size of the Himalayan 'red' bear, the Tibetan 'blue' bear, the Syrian brown bear, and the Gobi bear, as well as particular populations of far-north tundra grizzlies. Each of these subspecies have pocket populations which are bigger or smaller than others.
