No. When the fossil remains were discovered, because of the similarity with modern polar bears, the bear was misidentified. There never was a "TYrant Sea Bear" but instead the already known Steppe Bear, the Pleistocene European brown bear. See topic: Pleistocene Grizzly.

You are right, confusion with the fossils.

You are right, confusion with the fossils. AS the fossils are studied, the new bear started out as a huge polar bear ( Tyrant Sea Bear ). Then it progressed into an intermediate bear between the brown bear and polar bear. Now it has ( hopefully ) completed its transformation into the Steppe Brown Bear.

Yes, also note the much longer neck and sleek more streamlined head shape on the Polar Bear. Kodiak has a larger, blockier head.

Full on front comparison between a tiger and a grizzly, using the same individuals used in the other visuals comparisons.

Awesome Gurahl, thanks, exactly what we wanted to see. There is no comparisson, the grizzly is double broader, greater girth, much broader limbs. Just all around thicker, stronger build.

I think in those picture comparisons, they are about the same weight.

With wild animals ( as pictured ) polar bear is heavier. When considering both wild and captive animals, then the Kodiak bear is the biggest bear.

Consider that we now know that U.a.tyrannus was actually Ursus arctos priscus, the Pleistocene brown bear. 850 kilograms is equal to 1,873.93 pounds (avoirdupois) Compare the modern-day Kodiak bear with the biggest tiger of all time: Ngandong tiger: 400 kg = 882 pounds. Kodiak bear: 680 kg = 1500 pounds.

Arctotherium angustidens was probably the biggest bear ever. Smilodon populator was probably the biggest cat ever at ( possibly ) 470 kg ( 1,040 pounds ).
