I thought it would be interesting to compare some dog breeds to wild animals; here is an African leopard taking on a Tosa.

Nice comparisons. There are some who will argue a dog defeating a similar size cat, or one only slightly larger. My thoughts are; the cat is a much more proficient grappler. The dog ( especially some specific domestic breeds ) have greater courage.

A clan of spotted hyenas will not challenge a male lion. ( IMHO ), I'm sure that they would show the same respect to a grizzly. A Kodiak bear would scare them to death.

I would agree 90% of the time on a male Lion. But if the clan is large enough as this video shows he can't fight them all at the same time. It's only when a second male comes along that the odds change in favor of the Lions. A big boar Kodiak is quite a different story however IMO.

Thank you very much brobear, I will create a skull comparison thread too; they are also extremely entertaining to create.

Last comparison for today and this is the big one everyone has been waiting for I guess; the revised and probably my most accurate version of an adult male Kodiak bear taking on an adult male polar bear.

OK... I usually pull these pictures to a more proper location to discuss a face-off. Not today.... This is a 50-50 because the polar bear has a weight advantage here. It is only because of obvious appearance differences as well as obvious lifestyle differences that the polar bear is not classified as a brown bear subspecies. I would bet my favorite wooden nickel on the Kodiak bear.

I would vote for the Kodiak bear too. It looks more mascular. The polar bear is a slightly better grappler according to info posted by theundertaker45.

I've decided to return back to the roots and will publish my interspecific size comparisons using the old arena background here. I hope you enjoy it!
First Comparison is between a European Bison (Wisent) and an Indian Bison (Gaur).

The bison actually has a thicker neck than the gaur.

I know that both lions and tigers have been known to take down huge healthy bull bovines, but I just have to believe that this choice has to be taken when there are no other options. As for a grizzly, his normal prey choice would be a calf or ( if available ) a weakened animal ( old, wounded, or sick ). I really love these bull bovine comparisons.

Most would be females, weak, sick, or old also. All predators do that. Remember that tigers are specialized at sensing the weakest prey possible.

(1970) Causes of mortality of the wild boar and its interrelation with predators in the Amur territory. Zoologicheskii Zhurnal "In years of crop failure, brown bears are well adapted to the hunt wild boars.Bears do kill boar of all ages and classes.(Including adult and prime male wild boar)"
