Introduction - Polar bears are a subspecie of brown bears, it is belived that they were a group of brown bears isolated by glaciers, some of them were able to survive due to the organism vary and became polar bear over time. The fossil animal of brown bear, as well as polar bear is Etruscan Bear. Etruscan Bear's scientific name is Ursus etruscus, they lived during the Pliocene through Pliestocene, from 5.3 Mya to eleven thousand years ago, existing for around 5.289 million years.
Scientific Classification
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Carniformia
Superfamily: Arctoidea
Family: Ursidae
Subfamily: Ursinae
Tribe: Ursini
Genus: Ursus
Habitat
Unlike polar bear, the fossils of Etruscan bears encompass a large area, with a wide range of places include Eurpoe, Asia ad North Africa. A few fossil sites include Pardines in France, which the etruscan bears' fossil is believed that living in 2.5 to 1.8 Mya ago, Vassiloudi in Macedonia Greece which the bear is around 5.3 to 1.8 Mya years ago.
These Ursus etruscus were found to be forest adapted animal, which is similar to its precursor Auvergne bear since their fossil were normally found near forest. Etruscan bears were living in the Pliocene through Pliestocene. This period during the time was even a bit hotter from now and the climate is dry, the bears have been living in this enviornment for a long time.
Ursus etruscus living in different places evolved to different species, they majorly have three evolutionary lines. The most common black and brown bears' precursor were living in part of Asia. Another kinda of bear, the cave bear's precursor strated living in Europe and also ended living in Europe.
Structural Adaptation 1
One structural Adaptation of Etruscan bears are that their size is generally smaller than the mordern Ursus. Scientists reckon that these ancient bears are similar to the mordern Asiatic black bears. However, the fossil records also show that they subsequently increase the size and finally evolve to brown bear. Due to the fact that the environment duirng Pliocene and Pliestocene is difference from now, species can be totally different as the adaptation of the habitat is not the same. During the period of Pliocene and Pliestocene, the average temperature overall is a bit higher from now and the weather is usually dry. This environment provide this animal limited food sources and less bio-diversity, hence without enough resources, etruscan bears are tend to be smaller. However, due to the changes in environment overtime, the etruscan bears have adapted different neighborhoods and they have changed they strutural in order to survive.Structural Adaptation.
One thing that everyone knows about bears is that they are fierce, they are danger to human and they are also carnivore. Like most of the mordern members in the Ursus family, Ursus etruscus have sharp teeth for varios reasons. Due to the fact that Etruscan bears live in the forest and their main food source is meat, they have sharp and big teeth in order to assis them hunting and killing their targets immediately. These sharp teeth and huge also help them to attack or defend themselves when there are enemies that many other strong animals can be found in forest. As the result, this strong body part is very essential in their living which can help the bears protect themselves and assist when hunting. Finally, a significant feature of their teeth is that they had full permolars.
Behavior Adaptation 1
Like most of the mordern bears, etruscan bears are nocturnal animal, they were active at night and slept in day. Same as brown bears, etruscan bears were being nocturnal animal because it is easier for them to hunt, also due to the fact that the climate was gernerally high and dry during the Pliocene to Pliestocene period, they slept at night in order to stay cool. As many of the animals living in the forest were diurnality, for example the European rabbit which means they were active during day and slept at night, it is easier for the etruscan bears to look for food at night while their targets were asleep, it can also helps to enhance predation. The other reason why etruscan bears were nocturnal is due to the cliamate during millions years ago. Since the weather was hot and dry at the time, etruscan bears keep themselves cool by sleeping, it also helped to prevent them losing precious water under the boiling air.
Behavior adaptation 2
Generally, the behavior of brown bears and etruscan bears are bery similar,. Apart from they are both nocturnal animal, they also like to be solitary. Solitary means like to live work and live alone. Etruscan bears prefer to be alone beacuse it is much more easier and convinient to live in the froest. For example, it is easier to kill its targets alone because it wouldm't be noticed by their targets, also due to the huge body size comparing to other animals living in the forest, it was already hard for them to find shelter, if they lived as a group, it would be even harder to find a large space for them in forest. Moreover, etruscan bears need to eat a lot a day. Therefore if they live as a group, they might easily get into a fight for not enough food to share. On the other side, due to the fact that they are solitary animal, they walk around the world all the time and that was why theie habitat encompass a large area in the world.Pysiological Adaptation
Hibernation means the state of sleeping and resting during winter and can last for several days or weeks. When an animal hibernater, its body would slow down by lower the body temperature, slower hear beat and the detoxification system would stop, in order to save energy. Even though the temperature was higher during that time but in winter, the weather was still cpld. Therefore etruscan bears had hibernation. They hibernate for six months and it is called "denning". Hybernation could make them lose strength. Hence, afther their hibernation, they needed to be fed by lot of vegetations, animals that were freeze to death. They would started being active in the early summer and they would start finding food.Extinction Pressure
The major reason of the Etruscan bear's extinction is because of the dramictical drop of temperature in the late Pleistocene. It is believed that the change in climate in the late Pleistocene had lead to the extinction of most of the animals at that time, the earth surface was covered by ice and the overall temperature was about −6 °C to 0 °C. Unforunately, Etruscan bears were one of them. Due to the sudden changes in climate, plants and animals, like the precursor of Europe cave lion died, Etruscan bears did not have any food source, also they could not adapt the environment quicly, hence, the frigid weather caused the extinction of them,
