HE SAW A BEAR CATCH THE BULL BY ONE OF HIS FOREFEET AND BITE IT OR TEAR IT COMPLETELY OFF BY THE LOWER JOINT. THE BEAR NEVER FAILED TO SEIZE THE TONGUE, AND BURY HIS TERRIBLE CLAWS INTO IT. A MERCHANT TOLD OF A BEAR THAT KILLED 3 BULLS, ONE AFTER THE OTHER.

AN IMMENSE GRIZZLY PLAYING WITH THE INFANTILE. ON TERMS OF THE MOST AFFECTIONATE INTIMACY, THE OLD BEAR WOULD LAY ON HER BACK AND HOLD THE LITTLE FELLOW UP IN HER GREAT PAWS AND WOULD TOSS HIM AROUND AND TENDERLY HUG HIM, AND THE LITTLE DON WOULD SCREAM WITH DELIGHT.

Reminds me of the recent story of the bear protecting a lost child and keeping him warm at night. Bears are full of surprises.

Am telling you, this book should be called “the EXTERMINATION of the California Grizzly” now i read that another method was poisoning the food of the bears. One hunter killed 17 grizzlies this way. The 1800s in California was the wost century of bear hunting in history by far.

THE GRIZZLY IS VERY TENACIOUS OF LIFE, AND IS SELDOM IMMEDIATELY KILLED BY A SINGLE BULLET.

THE WOUNDED GRIZZLY WAS A FEARSOME BEAST. A RAGING MONSTER THAT FEARED NOTHING, AND HE CHARGED HIS ASSAILANT FORTHWITH.

WHEN YOU PLAY WITH FIRE YOU MIGHT GET BURNED.
A YOUNG MAN ARMED ONLY WITH A PISTOLS FOLLOWED A MORTALLY WOUNDED GRIZZLY INTO A THICKET AND WAS LITERALLY TORN TO PIECES.
ANOTHER HUNTER THAT MADE GRIZZLY KILLING HIS FAVORITE SPORT WAS KILLED BY A BEAR.

Here is an account of Grizzly Adams, his trained bear Ben Franklin, and his dog Rambler, in a fight with a female grizzly bear. Both Adams and Ben were severely injured.

Awesome. Grizzly Adams even owned lions. I never knew this. I wonder who he thought would win in a fight.

Awesome. Grizzly Adams even owned lions. I never knew this. I wonder who he thought would win in a fight. Grizzly Adams loved his trained bear Ben Franklin, he even made like a funeral for him. More than once he mentioned his strength. He also saw the pit fights when bears beat bulls most times and also 1 lion real fast. He for sure knew that the bear wins.

On the TV show, "Grizzly Adams", which was nothing like the real man, the grizzly Ben Franklin was portrayed by a retied circus bear named "Bozo" which was a small she-bear.

"The beast weighed 2,300 pounds dressed..." meaning even heavier in life. The California grizzly might have been bigger and heavier than either the Kodiak or the polar bear. Possibly the equal of the European Steppe bear. Unfortunately, all we really have are the stories told by those who slaughtered them. Too bad there has been no fossil remains found in California - some hard evidence.

Anyways, from all i read, yes, the California grizzly might have been larger than kodiaks and polars on average, but it looks like not by much though, very similar size, average and max weights also.
