Notice that even though this site has been wide open for a month now, we have thus far found one new member other than Polar and myself. Last year a survey was done and the tiger was voted as being the most popular animal on Earth. When I look at calendars each year in drug stores or department stores, I always ( of course ) see cats, dogs, birds, and horses. As for wildlife, other than assorted wildlife in general, I see lots of eagles and wolves. After that, in popularity, come lions and tigers. Bears are just about forgotten. Here in North America, the grizzly is our greatest wild animal. He is easily the equal of Africa's lion or Asia's tiger. Regardless of the fact that he is the fiercest, strongest, and smartest beast on the North American continent, along with the polar bear of the far north, he is all but forgotten. Even on facebook, I often see advertised wolf and eagle belt buckles, jewelry, and other items for sale. Why the wolf and eagle and not the grizzly? I cannot imagine Africa forgetting the lion in their artwork; nor Asia the tiger. Why then is our greatest wild beast neglected?

*I might also add that, here in the U.S.A. the deer is also a highly popular animal for works of art. But their popularity is two-fold. The are elegant graceful animals and therefore popular especially with women and children. But mostly they are popular because they are the most hunted animal by North American sport-hunters. The top animals seen on calendars each year in America are dogs, cats, horses, deer, eagles, birds, and the big cats. It pretty much ends there.

The mighty grizzly was once viewed as the King of Beasts in just about every land where they existed. He was often venerated as a god or feared as a devil; or in other cultures the great bear was considered as a spirit being who rules the realm between man and beast. He was never looked at as simply one of the animals. But in todays world, despite his great strength and impressive intelligence, the grizzly is for the most part completely overlooked. One exception is with sport hunters. Here in America, the grizzly is the most sought after trophy ... unfortunately for the great bear.

So, why are lions and tigers so overwhelmingly popular, but not the mighty grizzly? If we were looking at the athletic men of WWE wrestling, the lion and the tiger would be like - John Cena, Roman Reigns, or Randy Orton. The grizzly is more like - Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, or Mark Henry. The big cats are graceful and easy on the eyes. The general public see beauty in them as with a handsome stallion or a majestic bull elk. A grizzly is mostly viewed as a ponderous clumsy brute. Also, big cat documentaries provide more entertainment as they hunt and kill while grizzlies are seen catching fish or grazing on grass. No contest in entertainment.

This is true Ranji; you certainly enjoy it. There are a number of reasons for this. It all started sometime between 1100 AD and 1200 AD when, finding it difficult to put a stop to the many bear cults scattered across all of Europe, the Church came up with a plan to demoralize the bear by damaging his public image. Bears are highly intelligent animals and quick learners. They also have skills few animals can compete with. A bear has an even greater ability of bipedal standing and walking than an ape. A bear, despite his thick layers of muscles laid over a heavily-boned frame, has an even greater range of motion with his arms than a cat. His sense of balance in extraordinary. Also note that even an adult bear can, with lots of patience, understanding, and bear-savvy, be domesticated. It took little time for the Church to discover the bear's abilities. Dancing bears and bear acrobats and performers of all kinds were soon on the city streets performing for the crowds. All done in the purpose of belittling the bear and end the "bear worship". Since then, circus bears ( until very recently ) were still doing tricks to make people laugh. Besides being a clown, along comes the Teddy Bear portraying the bear as a soft cuddly character which persists to this day. The champion of the Roman Circus Games, the one member of the order of Carnivora which, in every account that we have thus far discovered, defeats both the lion and the tiger in single combat, receives little respect.

When we watch a grizzly documentary, we usually see big brown bears catching salmon. When not, we watch a grizzly hunting and killing elk calves and chasing wolves from a carcass. I enjoy these simply because I am a true-blue grizzly enthusiast and always seeking that one more tidbit of information to add to my knowledge about the "Boss of the Woods". But to the average Joe, this gets old and stale. Wouldn't it be incredible if some naturalists took the time to catch on camera the life of the Amur brown bear ( Ursus arctos lasiotus ) the black grizzly of the Russian taiga? Well, they did do one about the Kamchatka brown bear... catching salmon. But never the grizzly who sometimes hunts wild boar and walks along the trails of tigers.

I believe most tiger fans are just kids 16 to 25 years of age that enjoy watching how the tiger “jumps” very high! or runs fast! I rather watch true greatness.....URSIDAE.

Walk into a department store and look at all the picture-2019-calendars. You will see cats and dogs, horses, deer, song birds, eagles, wolves, and big cats.

I also notice that most bear fans are over 35, (like us), i notice they have more knowledge. It was noticed back in the old ( now extinct ) AVA that as a general rule, bear enthusiasts are more mature. Actually ( in their favor ) there are a great many very intelligent, highly educated, mature big cat enthusiasts. But then ( in our favor ) there is, I'm sure, a much higher percentage of fan-boys within the big-can enthusiast community. We recently had a someone attempting to prove that a tiger has a greater girth than a grizzly. He can not admit to being wrong. We now have someone attempting to prove that big cats have stronger bones. IMO - it infuriates the less mature fan-boys that they can find not a single verifiable incident of a lion or a tiger defeating an adult male grizzly in a fight.

Well what do you expect? I always go back to the same thing, if these guys think tigers are stronger and think a 400 lb cat kills a 9000 lb elephant most times, well then of course they will think a tiger has stronger bones than a bear, lmao. How can a tiger have stronger bones when its designed for agility, quickness, and ambushing? A bear is designed for raw power and digging. I mean its obvious which animal has the stronger bones.

There was this well-known lion fan-boy who had spent years collecting cherry-picked data. His data on grizzly size was from the Canadian barren ground grizzly ( smallest of the horribilis tribe ). He not only argued that the lion is stronger than a grizzly but also bigger. The tales he would tell should have began with, "Once upon a time..."

Thats funny, ha ha ha. Yeah everyone wants their animal to be the strongest of the strong. the fact is bears represent strength. Bear=strenth. But yeah, bear is not the most popular animal these days. So what? Bears got us 5 here, its enough right?

If there were accounts of lions or tigers killing full-grown grizzly boars in face-to-face encounters, I would not be in denial nor would I make excuses. If reliable evidence is ever presented that Amur tigers regularly stalk, ambush, and kill full-grown grizzly boars, then I would accept this. There is no joy for me in winning, even in a game of solitaire, if I have to cheat to do it. Those big cat fan-boys who lie and cheat and create fake data have no self-respect.

He means a tiger fan that is from Nigeria, he is 16 years old, he is on Carnivora forum, everyone laughs at his posts, basically every single post he makes gets refuted by Taipan and the others.
